Memories from Slovenia – Ricordi dalla Slovenia

in Pinmapple3 years ago (edited)

Hello everybody.

Last summer I was lucky enough to visit a beautiful place, Slovenia, and today I would like to share my experience with you through some photos I took. In particular, I went to Ljubljana, the capital, and to Bled, to visit the famous lake characteristic of this town.

A bit of history and general impressions

Slovenia is a state in Eastern Europe that borders Italy, Croatia, Hungary and Austria. It is a historically very young country, as it has only been independent since 1991.

The first ancestors of the Slovenes were the Slavs, who emigrated to the area of present-day Slovenia and founded the oldest known Slavic state, Carantania, in the 7th century, although it didn’t last long.

Until the twentieth century, as previously mentioned, Slovenia was ruled by foreign countries, especially by the Habsburgs and the monarchs of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But after this period, the Slovenian people began to emerge as a nation and made their strength felt, with a great sense of identity, against external oppressions. After World War I, Slovenia became part of the Kingdom of Yuguslavia, and subsequently after World War II, it entered the Federative Socialist Republic of Yuguslavia. Only thanks to the plebiscite in 1990, finally, this Nation achieved independence (with 90% popular consent). Today, in fact, Slovenia is part of the European Union and is also a member of NATO.

Arriving from Italy by car, as soon as I crossed the border, I immediately realized the great climatic difference between here and Slovenia.
First of all, a great wind, so strong that on the motorway, for some stretches, trucks are not allowed to pass! And then, although it was August, I found lower temperatures than in Italy and even rain (I think you can also notice from the photos).
Speaking with some local guys, however, I discovered that I was simply unlucky: the region around Ljubljana is very rainy, but there are also many sunny and warm days, where it is typical to go to the beach or to walk in the mountains.

Ljubljana

Remaining on the subject of climate, one of the things that has remained most impressed on me is the Preseren square, in which an artificial system has been designed that allows you to recreate the rain only and only in a specific area of the square! A marvel for the eyes.

70l.jpg

70i.jpg

But Ljubljana's wonderful attractions don't end there. In fact, the capital also houses a delightful castle (which unfortunately I was unable to visit due to anti Covid19 regulations), numerous churches and basilicas such as Frančiškanska cerkev (Franciscan Church of the Annunciation) and stolnica sv. Nikolaja (Cathedral of St. Nicholas),…

70s.JPG

70t.JPG

The thing that you can immediately breathe in this delightful city is attention to detail of the citizens, who demonstrate their love for Ljubljana through small but simple actions. In fact, even if you go far and wide, it is impossible to find a dirty area or with abandoned waste, and not even particularly degraded neighborhoods. Every single detail of this small capital seems to have been specially made to keep you with heart-shaped eyes. For example, look at the US embassy.

Ljubljana is also called the "city of dragons". As soon as you cross the walls of the historic center, you understand the reason for this name, as you immediately notice that there are numerous details related to dragons, starting with the famous Zmajski most, Bridge of Dragons. This has become the symbol of the city. The bridge was designed in full style of the Viennese Secession by the Trieste architect Jurij Zaninovic.

Another stop on my visit to Ljubljana was the Tivoli Park. It is the largest park in the capital, with more than 5 square kilometers where you can breathe the biodiversity of this delightful city, a path characterized by trees, flowers, statues and fountains.

70f.JPG

70e.jpg

In conclusion, Ljubljana has remained in my heart and I would like to return there in a calmer period and without Covid19, so that I can appreciate the many buildings and museums closed to the public. For example, there are numerous museums that cover a vast period of art history, even contemporary art which is my favorite.

Bled

Bled is a delightful small town that is about 50 km from the capital and is home to the famous Lake Bled. Although relatively small, this town is one of the most important tourist destinations in Slovenia, and in summer its population triples especially for tourists from Austria, Italy and Germany.

70bc.JPG

70ba.JPG

70bb.JPG

Lake Bled is a wonderful glacial lake in the Julian Alps. It is located in a truly picturesque location, as in its vicinity you can admire the romantic castle of medieval origin, surrounded by wild forests and mountains.

70bf.JPG

70bd.JPG

There are numerous activities that can be carried out at Lake Bled. First of all, its waters are suitable for swimming, even if only in certain areas. It is also possible to visit the lake in its entirety through a romantic boat ride lasting about 40 minutes. The lake also hosts some sporting activities: its waters are suitable for rowing and, in winter, a thick layer of ice forms on its surface which allows ice-skating!

70bg.JPG

70bh.JPG

The town of Bled is an enchanted place where you can admire all the beauty of nature. Despite being very touristy, you can breathe the air of an uncontaminated place. There are, however, the classic services that one might expect from a romantic location on the lake: benches, long walks, wonderful restaurants, historic pubs, clubs with Eastern music and, to my surprise, even spritz (a typical drink of my Italian Region)!

70a.jpg

Summary: For what little I have been able to visit so far, Slovenia is a wonderful place and I hope to have the opportunity in the future to be able to go there again. The anti Covid19 regulations are very restrictive and, at the moment, travel is to be avoided. But I hope this situation is resolved soon and, in the meantime, I will continue to look at these photos with a certain nostalgia.

Thanks for reading this far. A hug.

See you next time,

Delilha

Ciao a tutti,

Delilha
