Let's travel together #178 - Mănăstirea Sădinca (Sadinca Monastery)

Some people don't need nature and mountains to find peace for their soul and mind, but a specific place. A place that makes them get closer to divinity and further from real-life problems everybody is struggling with each passing day.

Finding your inner peace comes in lots of forms: from people like me who are feeling the most relaxed in the mountains or nature, to people who go regularly to church, or people who spend their whole free time playing games and live more the virtual reality which keeps them away from different situations of life.
However, just as I said, probably every single person who reads this articles would have a different answer to the question What activity/place brings peace to your soul and mind?, and I can't judge that because I often find my stillness in different activities or places because I guess it just depends on your mood and how serious you need that peace.
Anyway, no doubt there are lots of people going to the church and praying for a better living or simply going there to sit for a while and listen to the silence created by the whole landscape.
I know faith and politics are some of the subjects nobody should speak about just because everyone has different thoughts about them and there are often being started lots of fights just because some can't accept a different opinion than theirs, though, this is not the subject of today's post and I have no intention to turn my article into that kind of deliberation.

Nevertheless, I and my sister have been raised some good years by our grandparents which had a unique connection with this kind of places, and we've grown up going to churches often when we were kids and slowly develop that special relationship as well, but everything lasted just a few years until we hit the adolescence period of our lives and started to think differently.

In a shorter explanation, I realized that not a place or a church is going to establish the relationship you have with God and how much you believe in him and his powers, hence why from our almost daily visits to the church, everything turned into going just once in a while, when we visit a new region, or even just during the holidays.

Honestly, I doubt this change made us less faithful, but even if we have the same roots, we all grow up in different directions, making different decisions and choices in life.

One of the decisions was made when we continued our previous journey started by searching for the Mud Volcanoes from Hasag from where we were driving just 10 more minutes (7 km) until we reached Sadinca Monastery.

The view you have from the outside is not one that makes you feel like you are about to make a big discovery and see one of those unique churches with a panoramic view, but that it's going to be just the first impression because the tall gates and tiny parking lot which was overpopulated by cars and people visiting the monastery, kind of caught your attention more than the place itself.
But as soon as you push the gates and make your first steps, you will wake up behind a beautiful arch at the base of a tower where lots of murals are being painted.
I've never seen these paintings being common ones with some saints here and there, but actually, lots of stories that are differently shared than into words, and finding them just at the beginning of the entrance to the church is a good start and reminder to the life and daily people's sins.
The thing that impressed me was the way the whole area was maintained even after some heavy snows and rains we had in Romania lately and that everything was still looking fresh like it is during the summer, but also how many people were waiting outside of the church considering that there wasn't any holiday on the day of the visit.

However, we decided to walk around and explore the surroundings because we wanted to see more than the tower of murals from the beginning which was followed by a museum on the right and some quite big nests created for the birds.

The space available for exploring is not a big one because the whole surface is pretty well thought out having the church, museum, tower, a big building where the nuns and monks are sleeping, a tiny oriel and that's pretty much all of it, but it was nice walking down the alley and see as much as we could.

There was also a tiny statue that caught my attention because we are used to seeing the homeless people and beggars kind of being marginalized even in such locations. However, that is not the case of Sadinca Monastery which has a tiny statue showing this kind of people with a specific part of it where you can donate from the little you have and then see it being given further to those which are not even daring to hope for a better life.

Anyway, our journey didn't come to an end until we found out what was going on that made all the people gather to a single place, and that was because of a big table where fresh food was being cooked and shared with everybody, but also a famous monk which is known as being able to create miracles and help people heal from different diseases.

We are talking about a monk that when he was just 10 years old met one of the most important priests from our country, Arsenie Boca, who said that the little guy, one day, will build his own church and become a great monk.

A thing that happened in 2006 when the church was built up, and then, just one year later be hallowed and gather together hundreds of people every Sunday even though there are just a couple of families left in the village. There was a very special relationship between the monk and the priest and there is no surprise anymore that why we found so many people to the church when we visited it.

Sadinca Monastery is located 35 km away from Sibiu in a very isolated location almost forgotten by people, where you can feel how powerful the silence strikes when you drive the long road where you can't see anything around you other than some fields of corn and sunflowers here and there.
In order to reach the place that brings the silence closer to your heart, you have to follow the county road DJ 106B that makes the connection between Ocna Sibiului – Loamnes – Hasag - Sadinca, from where some road signs will appear leading all the way to the monastery.
