Let's travel together #242 - Cariera de Andezita Chileni (The Andesite Quarry)

Thank you for being by my side through it all..png

Even though the start of a new quarry has a quite well-planned reason to happen, sooner or later things change their course on a wrong path, and here are some of the wounds left behind.

Between our drives to the next things we wanted to explore during our Roadtrip from 2021, not for a few times we got to drive on some less beautiful sides of the country, especially when you meet hundreds of hectares of trees being cut down illegally or quarries which are changing the whole landscape.
And if you've been sticking around for a while now, perhaps you remember about the disaster from Geamana or the controversy from Rosia Montana.
Honestly, as weird as it seems, I've always dreamed on reaching the place where the whole madness happens and not just see what it leaves behind, because they are pretty hidden from the tourists' sight and it was a personal curiosity to observe the catastrophe they create right from the source, as well as see the faces of those who are the guilty ones.
Anyway, this time we are not talking about a quarry of gold or copper, but of andesite which is an igneous rock resulting from a volcanic eruption that is used for paving terraces, courtyards, alleys and sidewalks.

Thus, as much usage this quarry might have, I do feel like any place out there like this one should only have a term of being active and not do this for tens of years in a row because it destroys the whole environment which can never be brought back no matter how much money you would invest.

Not to mention about the huge gap that is being formed in the (once) beautiful landscape that honestly no one loves to see. Though, I'm still curious how well the people who are working here sleep at night being aware that they bring their contribution to ruining nature through their job.

The Andesite Quarry represents the 2nd largest quarry from Transylvania after the one from Bixad, and it was opened in 1935 by two entrepreneurs of a different culture than Romanian.
At the beginning, the whole mining process was done manually without letting things get out of control, but we are just 13 years away from 'celebrating' 100 of years since the mining began, which these days is well equipped with the most modern machines, equipment and installations that are showing the opposite to the intentions that were first presented.
Now if you ask me, I'm not surprised to see this considering that very few people know how rich are the grounds of Romania and that there are tens and hundreds of precious and semi-precious minerals that are resting in the underground, so in most of the cases when a quarry was opened, sooner or later the greed to get richer and richer became more important than keeping a place safe and don't harm nature that much.
So it's definitely the period when those with money can take advantage of this activity before more people open their eyes and stop these activities.
A thing that is even sadder is that all these mines are operated by people from abroad, which is both funny and frustrating thinking how poor Romania is while it stays on a huge treasure that could change the whole course of anyone living here.

On a side note, in order to start a quarry like this one, the process begins with different explosions that give people more or less access to the stones that then are being cut with specific machines and sold further. So not only that we have big sections of nature being ruined but also animals traumatized or even killed because no one really thinks that far and makes sure not to have any victims on the run to get richer.

And I know this is not a sightseeing attraction or at least not a place to be promoted further as I used you with, but considering that we stopped here during our road trip, I thought that it deserves a special post which should make people aware that this is not how things should work no matter how good or not your intentions are because sooner or later you will lose control on everything and let this business lead your way ahead that is not a happy thing for a long period because no matter how much money you earn, the energy you share will return back at you and the force of nature is a lot more powerful than what people realize.

Anyway, it's the first time since I joined the chain (almost 5 years ago) when I won't share the coordinates or how to reach this place just because it doesn't deserve to get promoted further and therefore we wouldn't even stop if it wasn't on the road we were driving on, but as little as we stayed there, I didn't see any smiles on people's faces which is the real proof that no one is happy with what it's being created in the heart of the mountains.

So sad :( I can only imagine how beautiful the place was before the human greed started to exploit it and ruin it... Heartbreaking to know that things like this are still happening in Europe these days :(

Even sadder is that this is just one of the many places in Romania where this activity is still happening. I hate seeing nature breaking apart and not being able to do anything to save it :(

I know. Same here...

I think it is very important to show these things, not to promote the place of course, but as you say, to raise awareness and let the world see what is happening.

As you explain I had no idea that this was happening there, that they had those riches and that as in many vulnerable countries, others are the ones who go and take advantage of those resources, it is a shame, but it is as real as the poverty that is well known.

There will always be others who take advantage of our weakness, but as long as we have a critical voice and a place like this where we can express our reality, we must do so. Not everything is wonderful.

Indeed. I'm happy you understood my point of view and what I actually tried to do with this post. Unfortunately most of the poor countries are exploited by people from other places which have the power of money to take advantage of their treasures..if that makes sense. It's a vicious circle where even though your place has enough treasures to make the whole action change, they can't do anything because it's not enough money for starting that activity. Or let's better say that money is not used the right way, because Romania is in top 3 most corrupted countries and there are other things happening with money..
