Let me take you to another jewel destination here in the Philippines. Picturesque white sandy beach, cool turquoise water, a mountain to conquer, a breathtaking overlooking 360 view, and a very friendly and welcoming community. So much to share with my 2 day adventure in Sicogon Island!

WHERE EXACTLY IS SICOGON ISLAND?

Sicogon Island is part of Iloilo Province which is in the Western part of the Visayas Region. To be exact, you have to get to the municipality of Carles which is a 4-5 hour drive to get there from the city of Iloilo. However the island could be reached through the municipality of Estancia where we rented a boat and took about 45 minutes to bring us to this beautiful island.

SAND, SEA, AND SKY

First thing I fell in love with the place is the white sand stretching wide beside the cold, turquoise waters against the blue sky. Picture perfect for me! The place still has preserved its natural beauty. There were not much establishments to stay, we opted to bring our tents to camp out which is the best way to experience the island life.

This white sandy beach is found in Brgy. Buaya. The best spot for swimming. They used to compare this beach to that of the famous Boracay Island.

The source of livelihood in this island is fishing so many boats could be seen along the shore. The locals are friendly and welcoming too. They don't get many tourists compared to other islands here in the Philippines.

CLIMBING MT. OPAO

A trip here wouldn't be complete without conquering mother nature through trekking the imposing Mt. Opao. The peak could be reached in 2 hours! For me, it was like a jackpot to be able to climb and swim all in one place!

And so we headed out to purse the mountain's peak. The path leading up was relatively easy for those who are physically fit. The lower part was filled with trees and lush vegetation. As for me, it was a battle not easily won (should have exercised more) but managed to do. Sunscreen and a bottle of water is must!

Notice the tall grass in the photo above? That's commonly known as "Cogon" which is abundant in the island. Thus, the name Sicogon Island.

Despite the heat of the sun, reaching the top was an amazing feeling. The peak gave us a breathtaking 360 view of the stunning blue waters, the neighboring islands and... more cogon! We couldn't believe such place hasn't been explored by many travel junkies.

And when I say breathtaking view, I mean by these shots we were able to take.

TRAVEL WITH A PURPOSE

The real reason for our adventure in this remote island was to bring joy to the local kids. We didn't have much but all of us chipped in some cash and bought some goodies from the mainland. We also brought used clothing to share to the parents. We had the activity the next morning.

These kids rarely know what the small treats we brought for them were. Such things were scarce from the island. They enjoyed the little toys too. Reminds me that we should celebrate the little joys in our life. Seeing the smile from the kids was just worth it.

Children and animals are close to my heart so I always support outreach activities like this or organize one. Its my way of giving back to the community. Hopefully I could do more travels and these programs soon.

UNSPOILED TUMAQUIN ISLAND

We ended our day with a quick sightseeing in Tumaquin Island. It's the smaller island seen from the coast of Buaya Beach which can be accessed through boat or by foot. We chose the latter. Only took us 5 - 10 minutes to get there.

It was noticeable that the island didn't have the fine white sand but was made of rocks, course sand, pebbles and shells. Wear slippers here.

From Tumaquin Island, Mt. Opao and the white sand beach of Brgy. Buaya gave us a fantastic backdrop! Couldn't get enough that we were able to find this hidden gem in Iloilo, Philippines! I need not more say much to convince you to visit this place! It is a must! (after this covid shit)
