Urkiola A Wonderful Place

Having the possibility of crossing borders and knowing new territories is an incredible experience, since it allows us to know new cultures, new landscapes and breathe different airs, it is for these reasons that when I had the opportunity to travel to Spanish lands I did not hesitate to do it and today I am convinced that this has been one of the most successful decisions I have made throughout my life, it all started with a long journey that took me from Caracas to Madrid and from there I would go to the province of Vizcaya, a place where without knowing I would find some truly beautiful landscapes.

Urkiola Un Lugar Maravilloso

Tener la posibilidad de cruzar las fronteras y conocer nuevos territorios es una experiencia increíble, ya que nos permite conocer nuevas culturas, nuevos paisajes y respirar aires diferentes, es por estas razones que cuando se me presentó la oportunidad de viajar a tierras españolas no dude en hacerlo y hoy estoy convencido de que esta ha sido una de las decisiones más acertadas que he podido tomar a lo largo de mi vida, todo comenzó con un largo viaje que me llevó desde Caracas hasta Madrid y de allí partiría hacia la provincia de Vizcaya, lugar en el cual sin saberlo me encontraría con unos paisajes verdaderamente hermosos.

Once I arrived in the Basque Country I was able to discover a totally different style from the rest of Spain, since it is an area that has its own language, with other customs and a different way of seeing the world, the truth is that I felt very identified with this culture and I was amazed with everything that I saw around me, I must admit that it is the first time that I step on the old continent so for me everything is new, besides I am a guy who has always liked the epic and medieval landscapes, so when I discovered stone houses and ancient buildings I felt very happy.

Una vez que llegué al País Vasco pude descubrir un estilo total totalmente diferente al que se pueda apreciar en el resto de España, ya que se trata de un área que cuenta con su propio idioma, con otras costumbres y una forma diferente de ver al mundo, la verdad me sentí muy identificado con esta cultura y quedé maravillado con todo aquello que miraba a mi alrededor, debo admitir que es la primera vez que piso el viejo continente por lo tanto para mí todo es novedoso, además doy un chico el que siempre le han gustado los paisajes épicos y medievales, por lo tanto al descubrir casas de piedras y edificaciones antiguas me sentí muy feliz.

One of my first tours was to the town of Urkiola, where I was assured that I would find dream landscapes, a quite cold weather and beautiful buildings to which I could take many pictures, we went by private car and from the beginning I was shocked with everything I saw since we would be entering a road in the middle of a pine forest, Waoooo! This situation was really extraordinary for me, from that precise moment I could realize that nature in this part of the world is very different, the truth is that if we compare it with my country here everything looks a little more gray, but this change seems great to me, since it is a tone that fits perfectly to my tastes and with which I can enjoy to the fullest.

Uno de mis primeros recorridos fue hacia la localidad de Urkiola, en donde me aseguraron que encontraría paisajes de ensueño, un clima bastante frío y lindas construcciones a las cuales podría tomarle muchas fotos, nos fuimos en carro particular y desde el inicio yo quedé impactado con todo lo que veía ya que nos estaríamos adentrando en una carretera en medio de un bosque de pinos, Waoooo! esta situación de verdad que para mí era extraordinaria, desde ese preciso momento me pude dar cuenta de que la naturaleza en esta parte del mundo es muy diferente, la verdad es que si la comparamos con mi país aquí todo se ve un poco más gris, pero este cambio a mí me parece genial, ya que es un tono que se adapta perfectamente a mis gustos y con el cual puedo disfrutar al máximo.

We arrived to a small town which was very well signposted, this was a place where I could find stone houses, with arched windows and gable roofs, an image that I will never be able to get out of my mind, because it was a very nice place and that until today I had only been able to observe in movies, Although it was getting quite cold I decided to lower the window of the vehicle, because I did not want the glass to tarnish that magnificent moment I was living, that is how I was able to capture several photographs and as far as possible I also descended and walked with my own feet several sidewalks, streets and roads.

Llegamos a un pequeño pueblo el cual estaba muy bien señalizado, este fue un lugar en donde pude encontrar casas de piedras, con ventanas arqueadas y techos a dos aguas una imagen que más Nunca podré sacar de mi mente, ya que se trataba de un lugar muy lindo y que hasta el día de hoy solo había podido observar en películas, a pesar de que estaba haciendo bastante frío yo decidí bajar la ventanilla del vehículo, pues no quería que el cristal empañar a ese magnífico momento que estaba viviendo, es así como pude captar varias fotografías y en la medida de lo posible también descendí y recorrí con mis propios pies varias aceras calles y caminos.

We continued our tour and after a few minutes we arrived at the Sanctuary of Saints Antonio Abad and Padua de Urquiola, this is undoubtedly the apex of the whole area, It is a very robust religious construction erected around the year 1899 and which has the curious fact of being built right on the dividing line of the Cantabrian and Mediterranean slopes, which makes it possible that during the rains the waters that are divided by its roof go one towards the Mediterranean Sea and the other towards the Cantabrian Sea. It is important to emphasize that the inhabitants of these lands have deep religious beliefs and at present the Catholic faith is not the only one that is professed in this area, as the mythology and indigenous beliefs are still very present in the hearts of many inhabitants, also Urkiola is an area where you can find numerous archaeological finds, Therefore it is an area that is still discovering its past, but at the same time is proud of it and shares it with great joy with all who visit this area, which gives us the great opportunity to learn a little more about the roots of this people and this is how we better understand their way of acting, thinking and facing life.

Seguimos nuestro recorrido y luego de algunos minutos pudimos llegar al Santuario de los santos Antonio Abad y de Padua de Urquiola, este es sin duda alguna el punto Cúspide de toda esta zona, se trata de una muy robusta construcción religiosa levantada sobre el año de 1899 y la cual cuenta con el curioso dato de estar edificada justo sobre la línea divisoria de las vertientes cantábrica y mediterránea, lo cual hace posible que durante las lluvias las aguas que son divididas por su tejado vayan unas hacia el mar Mediterráneo y la otra hacia el Mar Cantábrico. Es importante resaltar que los habitantes de estas tierras cuentan con profundas creencias religiosas y en la actualidad la fe católica no es la única que se profesa en esta zona, ya que la mitología y las creencias autóctonas siguen muy presentes en el corazón de muchos habitantes, además Urkiola es un área en donde se pueden encontrar numerosos hallazgos arqueológicos, por lo tanto es un área que aún sigue descubriendo su pasado, pero que al mismo tiempo se enorgullece de él y lo comparte con mucha alegría con todos los que visitamos esta área, lo cual nos brinda la grandiosa oportunidad de conocer un poco más sobre las raíces de este pueblo Y es de esta forma como entendemos de mejor manera su forma de actuar, de pensar y de enfrentar la vida.

I was very excited to continue touring the surroundings, I had the opportunity to walk through parks, gardens and squares, I enjoyed a deep clean air and lived the maximum tranquility that is felt in this area, accompanied by large trees, cobblestone paths and stone walls I felt deeply fulfilled and happy to know one more place in this wonderful world.

Con mucha emoción seguir recorriendo todo el entorno, tuve la oportunidad de caminar por parques, jardines y plazas, disfruté de un profundo aire puro y vivía el máximo la tranquilidad que se siente en esta zona, acompañado de grandes árboles, caminos de adoquines y paredes de piedra me sentí profundamente realizado y feliz por poder conocer un lugar más de este maravilloso mundo.
