During the cold winter days, I like to fantasize about seaside places with a mild Mediterranean climate. I live in Serbia and when I want to go to the closest island to my country, I always think of Krk in Croatia, which is only a 5-hour drive away. It is a very old and special island with beautiful places, such as the town of the same name, Krk.
Krk is located on the Adriatic coast, surrounded by mountains and stone ramparts from the Middle Ages. Archaeological finds have confirmed that there are traces of life on Krk since prehistoric times, so this place is worthy of respect and admiration.
The locals are so friendly that you will feel at home and wish you could stay there forever because happiness takes a little. Sometimes just the smell of lavender and the taste of olives are enough, and so it is in my case. 😊 Since I was born in Croatia, the smell of the Adriatic is my favorite childhood smell, and places like Krk evoke special emotions in me, sometimes intense and sometimes just nostalgic.
What has always fascinated me about Krk is the stones all around. There are many traditional stone houses and buildings.
And the city is surrounded by stone walls that had a defensive role in the past, but it was also a place of safety within which ordinary citizens, not only soldiers, felt protected.
The architecture of the old coastal towns amazes me again and again.
When I think I've seen everything, something new appears around the corner. It could be a very old house in front of which the cats enjoy their afternoon rest.
Or interesting decorations on the stairs of the houses.
Or bed linen drying in the gentle breeze that spreads the smell of clean laundry down the narrow charming streets.
People here live freely and in peace, and that peace makes your stay very pleasant. Everything is somehow connected, the courtyards are open and easily accessible for viewing.
Narrow streets are a feature of all coastal towns on the Adriatic and walks along them are always inspiring and tempt you to explore where they will take you.
Some parts of the town are very old and authentic, so old that you think they are about to collapse.
The sea is very clean here and there are many beaches, many of which are wild and not easily accessible.
There are historical sights at every step, so in addition to the beautiful sea, here you can also enjoy viewing the rich cultural and historical heritage.
The most impressive is the Frankopan castle, a very important monument of Krk, built by the medieval Frankopani noble family of Krk, between the 12th and 15th centuries on the seashore.
This castle has four towers that once served to defend the city, and today concerts and other artistic performances are held there. It is located on Kamplin Square and is built of stone. The name Kamplin comes from the Latin word for field, so it is assumed that this place was a bastion for the Roman army.
A lot more could be said about the island and the city of Krk, and this is just a small part to inspire you to take a peek into it and experience it.
Thank you very much for reading.
The images and writing are original and mine.

That's a pretty town. I really like seeing stonewalls and houses made from old bricks.. But I like more the view of the sea 😊 happy weekend @Jelena
And I also prefer the view of the sea! 😊 There is nothing better than living by the sea and breathing the sea air.
A view that I never found in my city! I dream to be able to go there if there is a chance, you are very lucky :D
