Waterfalls on the southern edge of the African continent – a paradise to behold

Travelers & adventurers are starting to flock toward this little hidden holiday paradise on the south Cape coast of Africa right now as summer gets into it’s first phase. The warm sunshine, fresh clean beaches and favorable exchange rate really make the southernmost shores of Africa an attractive place for anyone on the planet right now.

However, I want to focus on a very little known part of this Western Cape coastline, just about 550 km east of Cape Town. This region is known as the “Garden Route” and for good reason. It provides some of the original forest dating back hundreds of years to still be available for exploration along this coastline. Add to that the mystical shoreline, and you have the best of many worlds here.

In today’s photos you can see one of my detailed yet edgy views of the sweet waterfall that I came across just recently on the cliff just above the wild Indian Ocean shoreline. It’s edgy because I had to carefully climb into a little cave right on the edge of the cliff to capture these photos at this angle of the waterfall.

I wanted to show you how high it is and to give you the full picture from the most informative perspective. However, it was not as easy as I imagined it might be so the pictures only capture a fragment of what the place actually looks like in full. Nevertheless, you can get a good idea from these photos just how awesome it is to explore these coastal hiking trails in this “Garden Route” region of the African south coast.

Going with the flow on the south coast of Africa

This is pure rain water flowing all day and night for months on end, and it tastes as sweet and pleasantly refreshing as you might desire. Just at the bottom of the drop is the sea level, for soon after landing at the base, the water meanders just a few more meters or yards to wash directly into the sea.

Sitting on the very edge of the cliff and watching the water pour down to the ground below is just a great meditative experience. One can really get into the flow, so to speak. Also the sound of the constantly streaming water is soothing to the mind and can create a sense of calm since it’s a relatively small waterfall, despite its height.

In time to come I will capture some further photos of the waterfall from other angles so that you can really get the full picture. But for now you can at least see the view from the top of this particular cliff point. Life on the edge can really be inspiring from this perspective. I’m on the edge of the waterfall cliff but also on the southernmost edge of the African continent.

From here to the south is only the Indian Ocean and the next stop south of that is Antarctica. Still we are in the mild Mediterranean climate, as it’s called here, and the temperature variations is one of the smallest in the world for locations. This makes it awesome to visit all year round.

Some months this waterfall is pumping but for the moment it is reduced to a gentle trickle. A small yet constant stream of fresh life-sustaining water is flowing over the edge and crashing to the floor below about 50 meters down. Just to the right is the ocean shoreline and to the left is some more hill and cliff slope. This part of the Garden Route is called Plettenberg Bay but I’m in a particularly remote and less known section of the coastline here today to capture the waterfall like this.
