A Walk Through Barcelona Spain

Barcelona Spain was a bit of a different type of trip for me. It was a three night guy's weekend with my fellow expat spouses.

20220519_200153~2.jpg

There were four of us in total, and one gentleman even flew in from Germany to meet us there.

20220519_200202~2.jpg

We stayed for 3 nights in an Airbnb and made a long weekend out of it.

20220519_190250~2.jpg

The first day we saw Sagrada Familia, which I posted already and the next day we just toured around the city.

20220520_121102~2.jpg

I absolutely loved the buildings there as you will see from my photographs.

20220520_123433~2.jpg

The architecture was really incredible, to the point where I probably could have done an entire posts just on it's building facades. I'll just post them here and now instead though.

20220520_123429~2.jpg

I put together a walking tour of some city highlights that I found online, but it didn't exactly work out as planned, for a myriad of reasons.

20220519_150658~2.jpg

It was a 3 hour circuit from start to finish, which to me seemed reasonable for an entire day. It's something my wife and I would do pretty casually on a normal trip day, but in the end I think it proved to be too ambitious.

20220520_130219~2.jpg

As a group we were walking quite slowly and there were a lot of unplanned stops along the way that took up a lot of time.

20220519_150707~2.jpg

I actually started to delete stops along the way to speed things up, but that ended up making the tour quite boring, which made things worse overall.

20220520_123815~2.jpg

The back bit of the tour really just ended up being a lot of walking without actually seeing anything.

20220519_145140~2.jpg

In hindsight we should have taken public transit or scrapped the tour all together and just saw the main sites that people really wanted to see. My bad.

20220520_122954~2.jpg

Things are always different with larger groups of people.

20220519_145151~2.jpg

I probably deleted around 3-4 stops in the end (a few buildings and one full neighborhood) but nonetheless it took us until mid-afternoon to reach our half way point, which was Park Guell. So when an hour and a half walk (cut down to about an hour and fifteen minutes) takes until 3pm to complete - yeah it's best just to scrap the entire second half of the tour altogether 🙃. So that is what we did. I don't recall what I meant for us to see but I'm sure it doesn't matter.

20220520_145052~2.jpg

Park Guell was built in the early 1900's and designed mostly by the architect Antoni Gaudi. It's one of the largest green spaces in the city and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Source

20220520_145056~2.jpg

As mentioned, we arrived at Park Guell around 3pm or so. It was quite hot out by that point and I think people were tired as well. We realized that the park cost money to enter and that made us pause for a while to think things through.

20220520_145002~2.jpg

Admission was only 7 euros but no one, myself included, wanted to make a decision on whether or not to go in.

20220520_144704~2.jpg

I didn't care at all because my wife and I were supposed to be going back to Barcelona in the summer for a family vacation with her parents. That trip got rearranged in the end but at the time I just figured I'd be able to see anything I missed at that point. I was really hoping that someone else would make the decision on the park, especially since I felt like my tour was a major flop.

20220520_144242~2.jpg

So we hummed and hawed about it for 10-15 minutes until collectively we said "fuck it, let's go to the beach and drink sangria." So that is what we did.

20220520_140359~2.jpg

The thing about larger groups is that often times no one (myself included) wants to make a decision about things. No one wants to be responsible for others getting annoyed or not having a good time, so everybody tends to sit back hoping that someone else will decide. Humans in a group really do need leaders in the end.

20220519_190507~2.jpg

But shit, don't put me in charge. I still feel bad for making such a bad walking tour as you can clearly see. But anyway, we did actually see some cool things in the city besides the building facades shown above.

20220520_122617~2.jpg

For instance, Plaça de Catalunya is a large square in the heart of the city. It's surrounded by tall buildings, and has several statues and a large fountain at its center. It's a nice gathering spot for people.

20220520_122803~2.jpg

I've never seen so many pigeons in one place either, nor one's so trusting of people.

20220520_122456~2.jpg

There was a guy that was picking them up and handing them over to kids!?!

20220520_122518~2.jpg

I saw one young girl running through a large gathering of them and I had to turn my head out of fear that she would step on one of them.

20220520_122446~2.jpg

The Arc de triompf was another interesting sit that we passed by in the distance. It really stoodds out because of its color. It was actually a part of the 2nd half of the walking tour that got scrapped, along with the park behind its entrance.

20220520_120243~2.jpg

The Arc de Triomf was built for the 1888 Universal Expedition. It is a red brick arch that acts as a gateway to Parc de la Ciutadella and to modern day Barcelona. Source

20220520_125102~2.jpg

Casa Mila is a unique building that we passed as well.

20220520_125109~2.jpg

Casa Mila, also commonly referred to as La Pedrera is another UNESCO Site in Barcelona that was design by Antoni Gaudi. Actually, it was his last architectural project in any city and was completed in 1912 for the Mila family. Interestingly, at the time it was ridiculed by many people for its modern and somewhat outlandish design. Today it is a museum and is one of the most visited sites in Barcelona Source.

20220520_125154~2.jpg

I only saw the exterior facade from the street but was still rather impressed by it. It definitely stood out among the other buildings along the city street.

20220520_123936~2.jpg

The last building that I will highlight is another one designed by Gaudi. It's a colorful piece of architecture that goes by the name, Casa Batlló.

20220520_123925~2.jpg

It was redesigned by Gaudi in 1904 for a wealthy aristocrat named Josep Battló. The Battló family lived on the first floor while the upper floors were rented out as apartments. It is another UNESCO site and was open to the public in 2002. Source

20220520_123947~2.jpg

Just by looking at it you can tell that Gaudi took inspiration from bones and skeletons. The balconies looked like pelvic bones or maybe skulls and some of the columns looked like leg bones.

Despite minor hiccups due to my poorly planned walking tour the trip to Barcelona was actually a lot of fun. The city is very clean with well laid out streets and it has some very unique buildings and architectural wonders throughout. Overall I really enjoyed it and would probably even go back to see the insides of all of the Gaudi buildings that I missed.

Well thats it for now. If you are interested in seeing more of my trip to Spain than stay tuned, theres more to come. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

I have to agree with larger groups. Although I love seeing people en masse like that, it is very nonproductive trying to put together a tour for all. You really did cover a lot of areas, and the more you have to go, the slower the pace is. Or so it seems. I actually thought you did pretty well, but, again when I am just with my family, we have a different pace and we have different interests sometimes.

I love Barcelona and I thought your pictures were awesome. The architecture is probably some of the best I have ever seen. The Arc de Triomf is spectacular. It is so wonderful to have a city framed in that kind of art. Gaudi was such a passionate soul. Just look at the Basilica. Wonderous.

You will look back on that trip with the guys more fondly as time goes on. :) And look up all the Gaudi works when you go back. He is definitely a worthy venture. I think you saw quite a bit, BTW.

Yeah we did end up seeing a lot of the city really.

It's a beautiful with amazing architecture. If I go back I definitely want to go into the different Gaudi buildings. I'm sure that the interiors are really cool

The interiors are even more amazing than the exterior. No lie.

I believe it

I appreciate seeing all these wonderful photos @leaky20 because it seems like ages since I was last there and memories have faded.
Stunning architecture that you've captured perfectly!!!

I imagine a lad's weekend would have been pretty different indeed.
I'll be sure to revisit your post if I ever make plans to visit Barcelona:)

Yeah it was a different sort of trip but fun nonetheless.

Yeah the architecture is really cool in Barcelona

I liked the pictures! I tried to read the words, but they aren't making sense, I think it's because it's late because I am sure you're speaking English. It's 2am hahah....

Gaudi's shit is tight!

2am is too late to read anything. Don't worry about it, I never have anything that important to say anyway haha

Yep, know the feeling. Larger groups and a walking tour is so different than just the two of you.
You did try to cross a lot of distance looking at your photographs. And saw many highlights from the distance. And that is all ok. As long as you are having a great time.

We did the same visiting the park Guell we walked around it but never went inside. It was also hot and midday and we had walked a lot too. I been there when I was younger. And knowing hubby… we decided not to go in.

The facades of the buildings in Barcelona are just breathtakingly beautiful 🤩 one could spend days walking and see all kind of beautiful treasures.

The insides of the Gaudi buildings I truly recommend. When you are in the area. Do go in next time.
Great captures @leaky20 thanks for sharing.

Yeah the Gaudi buildings look very cool from the oitside and I've seen some photos online of their interiors as well. They look very interesting. I will definitely go in if we ever go back there. Hopefully one day.

Hopefully one day 🤞🏻

Thank you so much for the information and photos! I am planning a trip there next Summer, so your pictures are great to see what I might expect. Very helpful!

That's awesome. I'm glad I could help. I have one more post coming soon on a small resort beach town close by that may be helpful as well. No obligation to check it out of course but if you're interested.
Good luck with your trip planning and enjoy when the time comes.

Well that was a fun tour. I don't think I realized how much cool architecture there is in Barcelona and all the Gaudi. So fun.

Yeah it's a nice city with its own unique feel (at least compared to other cities that I've been to). I haven't been to much of Spain though.

....and there is nothing wrong in sitting on the beach supping Sangria!!!

Haha nothing wrong at all

🍹🍷🍹🍷

😂😎👍

The last time I was in Barcelona was on my honeymoon. So I better not tell how many years ago 😂 So thanks for the virtual tour. Barcelona is beautiful, and it's a pity that the tour didn't turn out the way you wanted. But that's what happens when you have to please many people you're not used to traveling with. Great pics :)

Barcelona is a great place for a honeymoon vacation. Glad you got to see it.
Yeah traveling with larger groups can be challenging for sure.

Oh Barcelona! ❤️ What a dream place to travel and fall in love ☺️ I've seen these places mostly in movies and on my Instagram feed where influencers frequent. Your photos are all lovely! 🫰

Yeah it's a pretty popular travel destination so that doesn't surprise me.

Thanks for the comment. 😁

I have never seen this beautiful part of Barcelona. I am a distant Barcelona FC fan since the days of Ronaldinho. I have in my wish list to visit Spain one day and spend most time in Barcelona.

You sharing this wonderful shots is really making me want to go right now.

Anyways hope you enjoyed yourselves to the fullest

I hope you get to go there and see the city for yourself one day. Good luck.

Barcelona is indeed magnificent. I hope to visit it someday...

I hope you get to 😁

Interesting and wonderful architectures! I first encountered Gaudi when it was mentioned by my friend who studied architecture.

I would probably still go to the park and then to the beach :D

Gaudi is definitely an very interesting designer. Truly unique.
