L'isle Sur la Sorgue France

in Pinmapplelast year

Our next trip location brings us back to the Provence Region of France for round two of one of our favorite locations in the country. This trip took place over a long weekend in May of 2022.

20220526_135133~2.jpg

We spent three nights in the city of Aix-en-Provence and four days exploring parts of the Riviera and several surrounding towns and cities.

20220526_135120~2.jpg

The drive down was long as usual but was made worse when we hit a few major traffic jams along the highway. I wasn't happy about it but I also wasn't at all surprised.

20220526_144234~2.jpg

The long weekends in May in France tend to be quite busy with people heading South, and it isn't uncommon for roads to get backed from so many vehicles heading in that direction.

20220526_144322~2.jpg

I anticipated that scenario and tried to avoid it by leaving super early in the morning (or maybe super late at night depending on your perspective). It was to no avail in the end though, we hit traffic in the South shortly after the sun rose above the horizon.

20220526_144610~2.jpg

Normally the drive would take us around eight hours but we tacked on at least an extra hour and a half due to vehicle congestion and GPS re-routes.

20220526_144646~2.jpg

It was frustrating at the time but in the end, it didn't ruin our trip at all.

L'Isle Sur la Sorgue

L'Isle sur la Sorgue was our first stop for the day and for the trip in general. It wasn't our main destination but more of an add-on along our route. Its located a little North of Aix-en-Provence and we would have drove right by it anyway.

20220526_134146~2.jpg

I tend to throw in stops along any driving trip if there is something worth seeing, and L'Isle sur la Sorgue was worth seeing in my opinion.

20220526_134156~2.jpg

All of the photos in this post are from the location by the way.

20220526_133903~2.jpg

We got there around noon and explored the town for maybe two hours give or take.

20220526_144307~2.jpg

Just enough time to stretch our legs, eat some ice cream, pop into some shops and of course take some photos.

20220526_132512~2.jpg

L'Isle sur la Sorgue stands for Island on the Sorgue, which is fitting given that the Sorgue River sort of wraps around the city, essentially making an Island of it.

20220526_132531~2.jpg

The old town center was very picturesque with many large canals criss-crossing through its center.

20220526_134503~2.jpg

It reminded me a little of the Netherlands at times.

20220526_134516~2.jpg

20220526_134524~2.jpg

If there were colorful fish swimming in the water then the place would look like it belongs in a fairytale.

20220526_131526~2.jpg

I didn't see any though, unfortunately.

20220526_131540~2.jpg

I really liked this spot in town where two canals converged into one. A small dam slowed the water a little and allowed it to gather into a man made pond.

20220526_134023~2.jpg

Restaurants around the outer edge of the pond looked like they would be a nice calming spot to have lunch or maybe afternoon drinks on the terrace.

20220526_134051~2.jpg

Actually, many of the canals were lined with restaurants and cafes with tables set up right near the waters edge.

20220526_134944~2.jpg

20220526_134936.jpg

The small city streams seemed like a prime location for any outdoor terrace.

20220526_135839~2.jpg

20220526_135851~2.jpg

Who doesn't love eating and drinking next to the water?

20220526_140107~2.jpg

Small metal or stone bridges and a very old water wheel really added to the charm of the town as well.

20220526_140004~2.jpg

L'Isle sur la Sorgue is internationally known for its many antique shops and dealers. They can be found scattered throughout the old quarter as well as newer portions of the city.

20220526_135749~2.jpg

The old quarter was filled with other shops as well, selling clothing and local delicacies,

20220526_140207~2.jpg

and pretty much the usual that you would expect from any quaint little French town.

20220526_132220~2.jpg

My wife bought a dress there, which was a nice souvenir for her.

20220526_140308~2.jpg

I saw this little Cafe between two buildings. It had a terrace right over top a small stream.

20220526_130815~2.jpg

I thought that the umbrellas were a nice decorative touch that added a lot of color to the space.

20220526_130809~2.jpg

I really like seeing these small canals located between buildings.

20220526_144514~2.jpg

We took a stroll through a small park and wandered around a little more and then headed back to our car to continue on to our main destination, Aix-en-Provence.

20220526_131655~2.jpg

Overall we really liked the town of L'Isle sur la Sorgue. It's a nice little city in the Provence region and I would recommend it to anyone who likes canals and restaurants on the water and quaint little antique shops.

Well thats it for now. If you are interested in seeing more of my trip to the Provence region of France than stay tuned, theres more to come. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

Sort:

I'm surprised by the clarity of the water.
I love the retro look of the narrow shopping streets, and one shop, in particular, caught my eye - Salon de cafe concept store...the colour of the building is stunning. I love the blend and like what I see on some of the mannequins.
It looks like it would be a busy tourist destination, so I'm not surprised to hear about the traffic, and even though you were still delayed, it was excellent planning to leave the time you did:)

We actually didn't go into that store but looking at it now I wish that we would have. It does look like it has some cool stuff inside - retro house decor. I bet that there would be some great finds in there.

Yeah, I think you really missed out on something(s) there:)

Definitely lol

Man I've never been there, have never heard of it, I am ashamed to admit. Provence is such a beautiful area! Did you do the Cevenes while you were in South?

Provence is very beautiful indeed. We loved that area. The Cevenes - is that the mountain range? No we didn't end up going. We had a small trip planned to go at one point near the end of our time in France but we changed our plans and went somewhere different in the end, somewhere that was closer. Or we stayed home haha I can't quite remember the details other than it was a plan, and then not. I did research and then we didn't go haha

The water is every canals is so clear, I'm amazed. I noticed some small pennants hanging. Is there a celebration going on or it's just a part of their decorations?

I think the pennants were just decoration. A lot of towns have stuff like that in France. They may have been put up for a celebration earlier in the season and than just left up though. That's a possibility

Awe, France and its fancy, colorful and green places… I love your pictures!! I really enjoyed them!!

Thanks. I'm glad you liked them 😁

So the few stops y'all had was not caused by traffic? I am asking because i don't see not road just building and by the way lovely photos and lovely content.

I didn't take photos of the road and traffic just photos of the destination. The talk about traffic is just preamble I suppose

Wow, so they are just intro that's creative thanks for sharing.

I would love a guided tour of that city, it is so beautiful and simple, full of good vibes with lots of color! enjoy a divine meal , but what I like most is the shopping area, to buy souvenirs of the trip to give as gifts!

Yeah you would definitely be able to find something nice to take home as a souvenir. There were lots of quaint little shops.

France seems like a spectacular place, so grand and adventurous...

The photos you took are really clean and colorful. I always love to see trees, rivers and beautiful terraces. Agreeably, the place would really look like fairytale if those colorful fishes were in the waters.

It was so calming to read through your post. What a beautiful start to my morning ☺️.

France is quite spectacular. I would definitely recommend it as a place to visit. There are a lot of great places to see.

Man, that river spot is really nice. Perfect sunlight out, nice colors popping on that moment huh. I was about to say, you busy beast of a man lol. Thought you were there now. Cheers buddy.

!LUV

Yeah it was a nice day. That was quite some time ago though. Just a memory at this point. Lol

Those city looks like a paint, so colorful..

And I amaze those river, so clear and looks fresh..

Yeah the water was very clear and the canals would be a great subject to paint.

Wow.. Such a beautiful place.. I love the vibrant colors and beautiful architecture of the houses..the water is so clear too that the bottom of it is evident.

Yeah it was neat seeing the vegetation in the water, swaying with the current.

What beautiful places, I have really enjoyed your photos the way you show old buildings and also new buildings. Make me led to enjoy this adventure with you.

I'm glad you enjoyed them. Thanks for checking it out 😁👍

Such an idyllic place… wow, it could almost fit in a fairytale.
Beautiful everywhere. And those restaurants along the water. Yep, could see me eat there.
Great captures and what a lovely day that was.
