The second day of my Italian escapade

in Pinmapple4 years ago

This might have been the most exhausting day of my trip, but I enjoyed every second of it. The beautiful hiking trails, the small towns of Cinqueterre, the incredible sunset and the lovely night in great company.

Sentiero 1 Levanto-Monterosso

I broke up my tent at sunrise (it's the safest option, if you don't want to get caught, which you don't want when you're inside a natural park) and left the spot as I found it. On my way to rejoining the Azure Trail for the last leg down to Monterosso I was greeted by one of the most beautiful sunrises I had seen in a long time. You see some of the five villages of Cinque Terre, the bay, the blue water. A view that I could enjoy all by myself, with some left over bread and cheese from the day before.

My rating: 10/10

Sentiero Monterosso - Vernazza

After making my way down to Monterosso-, seeing the town slowly waking up and grabbing a coffee amongst some locals getting ready for work-, I proceed to hike towards Vernazza. I left so early that I couldn't get the normally required Cinque Terre hiking card, which is required for some trails. The trail as you can see is beautiful, but I still think I prefer the hike from Levanto to Monterosso.

My rating: 7/10

Vernazza

After the hiking and not having the opportunity to shower I was extremely glad to be able to jump in the sea and swim around for a while. I went for a little swim and an early lunch before I continued on towards Porto Venere. I didn't spend much time here and with some of the trails closed I decided to take the local train up to Riomaggiore.

My rating: 7/10

Rifugio Muzzerone

The start of my hike from Riomaggiore to Porto Venere was challenging. In the hot sun I did the steep climb up. The plan was to find another lovely spot to camp somewhere between Riomaggiore and Porto Venere (a 5 hour hike). Not really finding a good spot to camp and fairly tired from the hiking, I find myself on the last descend towards Porto Venere. Not knowing where to camp I decided to lay myself down in the middle of the trail and wait for the sunset to pitch my tent. Every half hour or so some hikers would pass giving me a friendly "ciao" but also a somewhat puzzled look. Eventually two hikers decide to ask why I was laying relaxing on the trail. I tell them my predicament. They tell me that there actually is a hikers refuge a good 10min hike from where I am lying down, haha! After arriving and pitching my tent we spend a lovely night where they invite me for a hot meal and some beers. Waking up the next morning, they've already continued their route. It takes me a while to gather my things to leave as the spectacular view captivates me. If you're hiking in Cinqueterre I would highly recommend this place.

My rating: 9/10
