Landing in Frankfurt am Main 🇩🇪 [Eng][Spa]

If there's any city that perfectly exemplifies the recurring mix of modern and ancient structures, it's this one. Walking around Frankfurt is as if you were jumping between eras at every moment, enjoying its wide cultural offer and stumbling upon curious leisure locations.

It is a city known for the charm of the colorful wooden facades in its historic center, but also for being the headquarters of the European Central Bank. So modern design and traditional structures coexist mingling. However, today I want to focus on how nice it was when I finally came across the picturesque old town.

A flight from Barcelona to Frankfurt takes a little more than two hours and prices, as for any destination, tend to vary according to demand and airline. I traveled with the German airline Lufthansa on a very early Saturday morning, when we left Barcelona at 6.00 am it wasn't even dawn yet.

The flight went very smoothly, I couldn't comment on that if I hadn't been so surprised by the neat appearance of the cabin crew. It's a silly comment, I know, but honestly I found it surprising how well cared for and perfect everyone's hair looked, as well as how formal and well-mannered they were.

It's said that comparisons are odious, but I haven't seen people with such a good appearance on other airlines. It was also a pleasure to hear them speak in languages other than their own, since it was noticeable that they made an effort not to put too much emphasis on the accent. As I have already said, these comments are quite superfluous, but on flights one gets bored a lot and starts to detail things that are not really important.

Being such a short flight I was even surprised by the detail of receiving a small bar of milk chocolate, I thought it was a good ally to try to fully wake up, but I kept it for later because I don't like sweet things that early in the morning.

Something that did worry me were the weather conditions on arrival, according to the forecast rain was expected throughout the week and also, it was about 20º less than in Barcelona, so going from being in a sleeveless shirt to go very coated in a few hours seemed unfavorable to travel light.

This is why I was worried when we were informed upon arrival that we would have to go down to the runway to wait for a bus to take us to the airport entrance. I wasn't expecting so much traffic there, but the truth is that it is a terminal that moves quite a bit. The good thing was that despite being so early it was not too cold and the temperature was quite bearable, one less worry during the trip.

Pasemos un día en Frankfurt am Main 🇩🇪

Si hay alguna ciudad que ejemplifica perfectamente la mezcla recurrente de estructuras modernas y antiguas, es esta. Pasear por Frankfurt es como si saltaras entre épocas de poco en poco, disfrutando de su amplia propuesta cultural y topándote con curiosas locaciones de ocio .

Es una ciudad conocida por el encanto que presentan las coloridas fachadas de madera en su casco histórico, pero también por ser la sede del Banco central Europeo. Así que el diseño moderno y las estructuras tradicionales conviven entremezclándose, pero hoy quiero enfocarme en lo bonito que ha sido encontrarme con el pintoresco casco histórico de la ciudad.

Un vuelo de Barcelona a Frankfurt dura poco más de dos horas y los precios, como en todo, suelen variar según demanda y aerolínea. Yo viajé con la compañía alemana Lufthansa un sábado muy temprano en la mañana, cuando salimos de Barcelona a las 6.00h aun no había amanecido.

El vuelo se desarrolló de forma muy tranquila, poco podría comentar al respecto si no me hubiese sorprendido de tal manera el aspecto tan cuidado del personal de cabina. Es un comentario un poco tonto, lo sé, pero sinceramente me pareció sorprendente lo bien cuidado y perfecto que lucía el pelo de todos, además de lo formales y buenas maneras que mostraban.

Dicen que las comparaciones son odiosas, pero yo no he visto en otras aerolíneas a gente con tan buena apariencia. También era un gusto escucharles hablar en otros idiomas a parte del suyo, pues se notaba el esfuerzo en no marcar demasiado el acento. Ya lo he dicho, estos comentarios son bastante superfluos, pero en los vuelos uno se aburre mucho y se pone a detallar cosas sin mucha importancia.

Siendo un vuelo tan corto hasta me sorprendió el detalle de recibir una pequeña barra de chocolate con leche, me pareció un buen aliado para intentar despertar totalmente, pero me lo guardé para más tarde porque no soy muy de dulce tan temprano.

Algo que si me me preocupaba eran las condiciones climáticas a la llegada, según el tiempo, se esperaban lluvias a lo largo de la semana y además, hacía unos 20º menos que en Barcelona, así que pasar de estar en camiseta sin mangas a ir muy abrigada en pocas horas, me parecía poco favorable para viajar ligera.

Por esto me preocupé cuando al llegar, nos informaron que no había puentes aéreos disponibles y que tendríamos que bajar a la pista, a esperar un autobús que nos trasladara hasta la entrada del aeropuerto. No esperaba tanto movimiento allí, pero la verdad es que es una terminal que se mueve bastante. Lo bueno fue que a pesar de ser tan temprano, no hacía frio en exceso y se soportaba bastante bien la temperatura, una preocupación menos durante el viaje.

I'm not gonna lie, I got lost getting out of the airport, I spent half an hour wandering around to find the exit to the street despite following the signs and directions of every worker I asked. In my defense, some areas of the airport were closed for construction, so I had to take an occasional deviation, but I had never seen myself going through a security checkpoint twice to get out of the passenger area.

The good thing is that it is an airport with very good public transport connections, not only to the city center, but also has a long distance train station to travel directly to other cities, I liked that a lot.

In only 20 minutes you reach the central station of the city (Hauptbahnhof) where train, trolley and subway lines converge. The transport tickets are integrated and can be used in all of them, there are many variations and possibilities, truth is that Germany has a very extensive and organized public transport system.

The station gives its name to the district in which it is located, the Bahnhofsviertel, a very busy and unfriendly looking area. I had already been told that there were certain places in Frankfurt that were best avoided or where you had to be more careful, not so much for safety reasons but rather because of the atmosphere of decadence that is perceived.

It is very touristy to find yourself in exactly the wrong places without realizing it, so I found myself walking through this area as soon as I left the central station and I realized it when SexShops and brothels were popping up all the time, curiously crowded at 10.0 am. It is not for nothing that it is known as Frankfurt's red light district.

I did not imagine that I could find so many drunk people at that time of the morning out there or see so many police cars patrolling the area. It was a curious situation, it did not go beyond that, seeing a lot of vice and clandestine movement as soon as I arrived made me remember the warnings and take note to avoid certain streets, just in case.

So the most prudent thing to do was to go through that area by public transport, I insist, I doubt that something bad can really happen, unless you look for it of course, the fact is more about the idea of walking through places with a bad appearance and some tension in the atmosphere, it is not a place to walk with children, but it is a place to go to snoop around occasionally.

No voy a negarlo, me hice un lio para salir del aeropuerto, estuve media hora dando vueltas para encontrar la salida a la calle a pesar de seguir las señalizaciones e indicaciones de cada trabajador al que le preguntaba. En mi defensa había algunas zonas del aeropuerto clausuradas por obras, por lo que había que tomar algún desvío ocasional, pero jamás me había visto pasando dos veces por un control de seguridad para poder salir de la zona de pasajeros.

Lo bueno es que es un aeropuerto con muy buenas conexiones de transporte público, no solo hacia el centro de la ciudad, sino también cuenta con una estación de trenes de larga distancia para viajar directamente a otras ciudades, eso me gusto mucho.

En tan solo 20 minutos se llega a la estación central de la ciudad (Hauptbahnhof) en la que confluyen lineas de tren, tranvía y metro. Los billetes de transporte son integrados y pueden utilizarse en todos, hay muchas variaciones y posibilidades, la verdad es que Alemania cuenta con un sistema de transporte público muy extenso y organizado.

La estación le da su nombre al distrito en el que se encuentra, el Bahnhofsviertel una zona muy movida y un con un aspecto poco amigable. Me habían comentado ya que había ciertos lugares en Frankfurt que era mejor evitar o en los que había que tener mayor cuidado, no tanto por una cuestión de seguridad sino más bien por el ambiente de decadencia que se percibe.

Muy de turistas es encontrarse exactamente en los lugares menos indicados sin darse cuenta, así que me vi caminando por este sector nada más salir de la estación central, me percaté de ello cuando no paraban de saltar a la vistas SexShops y casas de citas curiosamente concurridas a las 10.0h. Por algo es conocida como la zona roja de Frankfurt.

No me imaginaba que pudiese encontrarme a personas tan borrachas a esa hora de la mañana por ahí, ni ver a tantos carros de policía patrullando la zona. Fue una situación curiosa, no pasó de eso, ver mucho vicio y movimiento clandestino nada más llegar me hizo recordar las advertencias y tomar nota de evitar ciertas calles, por si acaso.

Así que lo más prudente era atravesar esa zona en transporte público, reitero, dudo que pueda pasar algo malo realmente, a menos que te lo busques claro, la cuestión recae más sobre la idea de pasear por lugares con mal aspecto y cierta tensión en el ambiente, no es un lugar para caminar con niños, pero si para acercarse a curiosear puntualmente.

Römerberg Square

The main touristic point in the city is its old tow, especially the picturesque town hall square, Römerberg, for this reason it is often very crowded and to get a picture, where you can appreciate every part of it without so many passersby, is advisable to approach very early in the morning, I had the chance to do it, so I was very happy to get these images showing the detail of the facades and distribution.

Many buildings are food stores that are interspersed with the town hall building and the church of St. Nicholas (Alte Nikolaikirche). In its center stands the fountain of justice, it made me think of some old tale of knights and villagers, due to the contrast with the background.

Already around 10.0 am it is usually very crowded and most of the food stalls and bars are full of people having a coffee or, surprisingly, a beer for breakfast. The truth is that it is not such a big space, it is as if it were a small circle of yesteryear among the big city full of modern buildings.

Moving a little further away but still in the same area one can see the imposing Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus) which is usually quite crowded as well.

El principal punto de interés turístico en la ciudad es su caso antiguo y, sobre todo, la pintoresca plaza del ayuntamiento: Römerberg. Razón por la que suele estar muy concurrida, así que para poder obtener una imagen en donde se pueda apreciar cada parte de ella sin tantos transeúntes, es recomendable acercarse muy temprano en la mañana, yo tuve la oportunidad de hacerlo y quedé muy contenta de poder hacer estas imágenes que muestran el detalle de las fachadas y su distribución.

Muchos de estos edificios son locales de comida que, se intercalan con el edificio del ayuntamiento y la iglesia de San Nicolás(Alte Nikolaikirche). En su centro se erige la fuente de la justicia, me hizo pensar en algún cuento antiguo de caballeros y aldeanos al verla en contraste con el fondo.

Ya sobre las 10.0h el lugar suele estar muy concurrido, la mayoría de los puestos de comida y bares están llenos de personas tomando un café o alguna cerveza de desayuno, sorprendentemente. La verdad es que no es un espacio tan grande, es como si fuese un pequeño circulo de antaño entre la gran ciudad llena de edificios modernos.

Alejándose un poco más, pero aún en la misma zona, se puede ver la imponente Catedral de Frankfurt (Kaiserdom St. Bartholomäus) que también suele estar bastante concurrida.

Breakfast at the Kleinmarkthalle

I couldn't complete this first tour without giving an interesting recommendation for an out-of-the-ordinary but very typical breakfast.

Honestly, there are many places in the streets where you can buy at a good price any kind of bread and snacks, but I think it is worthwhile to stop by the central market of the city and enjoy the colorful tour that can be done between the fruit stores, fresh vegetables and the large number of handicrafts they offer.

Inside this market there are several options to have a local breakfast, there are many bakeries with attractive options and a couple of cafes that use high quality beans. There are also butcher shops that offer sandwiches prepared with cured meats, steaks and sausages.

Looking for something savory for breakfast, I got these curious bread rolls, which I had not listed in my things to try, but which turned out to be a very typical option in Germany, they are called mettbrötchen.

I like meat very much and I have no problem eating it raw, I know that to many people this would not seem appealing at all, but I can assure you that it is one of the tastiest things I tried during my trip to Germany.

They were sold in one of the butcher's stalls, so one could verify that it was a fresh preparation where the necessary sanitary control was maintained so, that its consumption is safe.

There were two kinds, with ground beef or pork, both seasoned only with salt and pepper and if desired there was a variation with fresh onion as a topping. I decided to try both even though I had my doubts about the safety of eating raw pork.

But trusting that the sanitary regulations would not fail, I dared and I could not have been more satisfied with the choice, they really were delicious bites and the flavor of the meat wasn't strong at all, very subtle and quite well seasoned, it was even a light breakfast for me because it didn't feel heavy at all. Highly top notch.

Desayuno en el Kleinmarkthalle

No podía terminar este primer recorrido por la ciudad, sin dejar una interesante recomendación para desayunar, algo fuera de lo común turisticamente hablando, pero muy típico.

Sinceramente hay muchos locales en las calles en donde comprar a buen precio cualquier tipo de panes y snacks, pero creo que vale mucho la pena pasarse por el mercado central de la ciudad, disfrutar del colorido recorrido que se puede hacerse entre las tiendas de frutas, verduras frescas y la gran cantidad de productos artesanales que se ofrecen.

Dentro de este mercado hay varias opciones para tomar un desayuno local, hay varias panaderías con ofertas llamativas y un par de cafés que utilizan grano de gran calidad. También carnicerías que ofrecen sandwiches preparados con embutido, carnes y salchichas.

En búsqueda de desayunar algo salado, conseguimos estos curiosos panecillos, que yo no tenía contemplados en mi lista de comidas que probar, pero que resultó ser una opción muy típica en Alemania, son llamado mettbrötchen.

A mí me gusta mucho la carne y no tengo problema en comerla cruda, sé que a muchas personas esto no les parecería nada llamativo pero, puedo asegurar que, es una de las cosas más sabrosas que probé durante mi viaje por Alemania.

Los vendían en uno de los puestos de carnicería, con lo que uno podía comprobar que se trataba de una elaboración fresca, en donde se mantenía el control sanitario necesario para que su consumo sea seguro.

Los había de dos tipos, con carne molida de vacuno o carne de cerdo, ambos sazonados solo con sal y pimienta, si se deseaba, había una variación con cebolla natural de topping. Decidí probar los dos aunque tenía mis dudas sobre la seguridad de comer carne cruda de cerdo.

Pero confiando en que las regulaciones sanitarias no fallaran me atreví y no pude estar más satisfecha con la elección, realmente eran unos bocados deliciosos y el sabor de la carne no era para nada fuerte, muy sutil y bastante bien condimentado, me resultó hasta un desayuno ligero porque no caía para nada pesado. Muy top.

This is just a brief glimpse of how much the city of Frankfurt am Main has to offer, touring it thoroughly is one of the best ways to enjoy, sometimes we don't have enough time to stop and absorb everything that a new place is able to offer, we travel in a hurry and trying to challenge our capacity for amazement, but places like this are worth stopping and enjoying the atmosphere it offers.

The weather was benevolent despite the dismal predictions, I managed to enjoy some glimmer of light between the cloudy skies, I imagine that in summer these images would be even more beautiful and the colors would be much better appreciated, but I always keep positive and I think, it is a very good first impression to consider coming back soon and compare.

We'll continue walking through some spots of this city and, of course, tasting some of its typical food, because a fun way to travel is to get to know the flavors of each city.

Esto e tan solo una breve mirada de lo mucho que la ciudad de Frankfurt am Main puede ofrecer, recorrerla con detenimiento es una de las mejores formas de disfrutarla, a veces no contamos con suficiente tiempo para detenernos y absorber todo lo que un nuevo lugar es capaz de ofrecernos, viajamos con prisas e intentando desafiar nuestra capacidad de asombro, pero en lugares como este, vale mucho la pena detenerse y disfrutar de ambiente que ofrece.

El tiempo fue benevolente a pesar de las funestas predicciones, algún rayo de luz alcanzaba a disfrutar entre tanto cielo nublado, imagino que en verano estas imágenes sería aun más preciosas y los colores se apreciarían mucho mejor, pero siempre me quedo con lo positivo, creo que es una muy buena primera impresión para considerar volver en un futuro y contrastar.

Seguiremos paseando por algunos rincones de esta ciudad y por supuesto, degustando algunos de sus productos típicos, porque una divertida forma de viajar es ir conociendo los sabores de cada ciudad.

Así que, como se diría en alemán: Bis bald!
