Kea island (Hellas)

in Pinmapple3 years ago

They say that top notch fragrances come in small containers and definitely the small island of Kea located East of Athens in the Aegean sea is no exception. However, the landscape's diversity of mountain and sea makes it feel like it's double its real size (if not more). At the same time it is not a popular touristic destination therefore you can enjoy the slow pace of the island without elbowing with the crowds.

The ferry from the port of Lavrio is the main (and for most of the time the only) way to get there. This 1 hour trip offers you the chance to see the deserted island of Makronissos, as the ferry passes close to its lighthouse:

The last time this island had some population it consisted of political prisoners many decades ago. Today there's no one living there, no infrastructure and no regular boat connection.

The entrance to the port of the island (Korissia) is such a matching intro for the beauty that's waiting to please the island's visitors:

The town of Kea (Ioulia) is a real gem and such a joy to walk the narrow cobblestone streets while admiring those traditional stone houses regardless their condition:

Yes, you can also play chess in public if you like:

Hard to find a beach around the island that doesn't make you stop for photos and Kea is full of them. Here's only a few:

Koundouros

Otzias

Riding the island itself is pure joy as there's some many view points worth stopping at:

I think it's time to enjoy the ride with some music from Police:

Oh Greece! When can I ever visit my dream country. Is it ideal for backpackers? How is the cost of living in this island?

It's a pretty quiet and neat island, I'd say in general it's more ideal for relaxed pensioners than for backpackers hence you'll probably meet more of the first than the latter.
