At 555 feet (169 meters) the Washington Monument is a very visible landmark in DC.

The monument is named after George Washington, the first president of the United States. Here is a statue of him at the base of the monument right by the elevators to go to the top.
Construction started one July 4, 1848 and was stopped during the civil war. It started again in 1876 and was finished one Feb. 21 1884 (the day before Washington's Birthday). While I was waiting to go inside I asked one of the park rangers about the elevator. He said that it started with a steam elevator and was later replaced by an electric one. So grateful for the elevator, 550 feet would be quite a hike!
Bricks
The one good thing about climbing the steps would be the opportunity to see the bricks. Here is a poster of what they look like. The elevator does slow down so we can see some of the bricks. Every state has a brick represented.

Observation Deck
The observation deck has been closed for about a decade. It was so fun to get to go up and look out on the city. It was closed for renovation and then Covid.
I think the best part of going up was actually waiting in line and meeting and talking to people from all over the world--New Hampshire, Mexico and Germany were where the people I talked the most were from.
The National Mall is about 700 acres and has 14 monuments and memorials. Can you see them? I also listed some other interesting landmarks.

Photos are taken from all different years when I visited DC. It was so great to be able to go back up to the top and take pictures again. I am so happy they replaced the windows!

Great photos. It's neat seeing the monument during the different seasons. You must have been there quite a few times.
Those bricks are pretty cool as well. Its awesome how each state is represented.
@leaky20 I lived in DC for 6 years and then have been back every year, except for 2020, in the last 15 years. So yep, a lot. Love this city.

Have you been to the top? It really is worth it.
I went to the top when I was younger, but not in recent years. The last time we were there, the Monument was closed.
