Hello dear Hive enthusiasts!
On a beautiful sunny winter day we couldn't stay at home and resit to go out and extend our horizon!
The border with Italy is very close to our home, around 10 kilometers away. Since a long time ago, we planned to go for a true Italian espresso accompanied by a delicious pastiery. For that, we only needed to cross the border and stop at the nearby village. We immediately felt the change of the countries as the villages look different, the streets feel more narrow and definitely the Italian people looked very neat and fashionable.
From far away we located a monastery on a hill which we decided to visit the next time.
The valley leading to our destination Udine, which is 37 kilometers away from the border is quite abandoned as it's on the outskirt of the country. It's not at all turisticly promoted, even in our opinion it hides many unique gems and beautiful nature sceneries.
Reaching the Udine city in the late morning, we quickly found a parking spot right in front of the old town of the city.
On the way to the center we spotted a local bar looking very topically Mediterranean with elderly people. We immediately made new friends. Besides two glasses of wine, the bartender prepared us also some sandwiches with Italian salami.
The city was nice, looking very ancient. The old entrance was built around 1200 CE. From there the path lead us to the center, which was nicely decorated for Christmas with a big shooting star in the main square. Everywhere you could stop for shopping or to have another drink at the bar.
We walked up to the castle where we could see all the mountains in the distance (Dolomites, Austrian and Slovenian Alps). After we were wondering around the city and taking pictures. This time we took with us also the film camera.
In between we stopped for our before prepared breadies, which was giving us enough energy to reach back home in the afternoon.
We went on the hill to reflect on the day and enjoy the sunset.
