Hello from Georgia once again! As promised in the last post, today I present you my top 3 sights of Tbilisi. Before my trip, I was most looking forward to the unique Bridge of Peace, which I showed you in my first report about the Georgian capital. I never expected that this fascinating building would not even make it into my top 3. But Tbilisi surprised me in many ways. So here are my three favorite attractions:

Hallo aus Georgien wieder einmal! Wie im letzten Beitrag versprochen, präsentiere ich euch heute meine Top 3 Sehenswürdigkeiten von Tiflis. Vor meiner Reise freute ich mich am meisten auf die einzigartige Friedensbrücke, die ich euch in meinem ersten Bericht über die georgische Hauptstadt bereits gezeigt habe. Niemals hätte ich erwartet, dass es dieses faszinierende Bauwerk nicht einmal in meine Top 3 schaffen würde. Doch Tiflis hat mich in vielerlei Hinsicht überrascht. Hier also meine drei Lieblingsattraktionen:

🥉 3rd Rank: The Holy Trinity Cathedral/Platz 3: Die Sameba-Kathedrale

This is no less than the largest church in Transcaucasia. The 84m high cathedral was completed in 2004 and is located on a hill on the left bank of the Kura River. As soon as I entered the gate to the church area and saw the huge building at the end of the long corridor, I was more than impressed. I had imagined the church to be much smaller and less spectacular.

Hierbei handelt es sich um nicht weniger als die größte Kirche Transkaukasiens. Die 84m hohe Kathedrale wurde im Jahr 2004 fertiggestellt und liegt auf einem Hügel am linken Ufer der Kura. Schon als ich das Tor zum Kirchenareal betrat und das riesige Gebäude am Ende des langen Korridors sah, war ich mehr als beeindruckt. Ich hatte mir die Kirche viel kleiner und unspektakulärer vorgestellt.

Once you have climbed the steps to the cathedral forecourt, you can enjoy a fantastic view of Tbilisi and the opposite mountains. Admission is completely free and you can also visit the church from the inside for free. But be aware: your clothes must definitely cover your shoulders and knees. I was wearing shorts, so unfortunately I was denied entry. By the way, a visit is also worthwhile in the evening, because the building is beautifully illuminated as soon as the sun has set. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time for a second evening visit.

Hat man erst einmal die Stufen zum Kathedralenvorplatz erklommen, genießt man einen traumhaften Ausblick auf Tiflis und die gegenüberliegenden Berge. Der Eintritt ist vollkommen kostenlos und man kann die Kirche auch gratis von innen besichtigen. Doch Vorsicht: Eure Kleidung muss auf jeden Fall eure Schultern und Knie bedecken. Ich hatte eine kurze Hose an und somit blieb mir der Eintritt leider verwehrt. Übrigens lohnt sich ein Besuch auch abends, denn das Gebäude wird wunderschön beleuchtet, sobald die Sonne untergegangen ist. Für einen zweiten abendlichen Besuch reichte meine Zeit aber leider nicht aus.

🥈 2nd Rank: The Bath Quarter/Platz 2: Das Bäderviertel

This district, also called Abanotubani, has been famous for its numerous sulphur baths for centuries, and you can still visit them today. But even without swimwear in your luggage, a visit is worthwhile. One reason for that is the Persian architecture. A particular eye-catcher is the turquoise-blue façade of the Orbeliani bath.

Der auch Abanotubani genannte Stadtteil ist seit Jahrhunderten berühmt für seine zahlreichen Schwefelbäder, die man auch heute noch besuchen kann. Doch auch ohne Badekleidung im Gepäck lohnt sich ein Besuch. Dies liegt zum einen an der persischen Architektur. Ein besonderer Blickfang ist dabei vor allem die türkisblaue Fassade des Orbeliani-Bades.

But there is also another, quite unexpected attraction. If you follow the path along the small stream over numerous footbridges, you will reach a gorge at the end of which a beautiful, natural waterfall awaits you. It's only a very short hike that is absolutely not exhausting at all. From the Orbeliani baths you can reach it in just five minutes. A natural waterfall in the centre of a city with more than a million inhabitants - can you believe it? The unique atmosphere of the bath district with its mix of breathtaking nature and oriental architecture is definitely worth a visit.

Doch es gibt auch eine weitere, ganz unerwartete Attraktion. Folgt man dem Pfand entlang des kleinen Bächleins über zahlreiche Fußgängerbrücken, gelangt man in eine Schlucht, an deren Ende einen ein wunderschöner, natürlicher Wasserfall erwartet. Es handelt sich dabei nur um eine sehr kurze Wanderung, die absolut nicht anstrengend ist. Vom Orbeliani-Bad sind es gerade einmal fünf Minuten Fußweg. Ein natürlicher Wasserfall im Zentrum einer Millionenstadt - ist das zu glauben? Die einzigartige Atmosphäre des Bäderviertels mit ihrem Mix aus atemberaubender Natur und orientalischer Architektur ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert.

🥇 1st Rank: The Chronicle of Georgia/Platz 1: Die Chronik von Georgien

Somewhere I picked up that on the outskirts of Tbilisi there is a hill with a monument illustrating the history of Georgia. Since I had nothing else to visit on my last day in the capital, I took the 20-minute taxi ride. But what awaited me there exceeded all my expectations and left me truly speechless. This monument is simply huge, massive, colossal - I'm missing superlatives! The memorial was completed in the mid-80s and is also called the Stonehenge of Georgia. But honestly, the real Stonehenge, which I have also visited, looks like a ridiculous pile of stones in comparison. Here you feel like a tiny ant in a Lord of the Rings movie.

Irgendwo schnappte ich mal auf, dass es am Stadtrand von Tiflis einen Hügel mit einem Denkmal gibt, das die Geschichte Georgiens illustriert. Da ich an meinem letzten Tag in der Hauptstadt sonst nichts mehr zu besichtigen hatte, nahm ich die 20-minütige Taxifahrt auf mich. Doch was mich dort erwartete, sprengte meine Erwartungen und machte mich wirklich sprachlos. Dieses Monument ist einfach riesig, gewaltig, kolossal - mir fehlen die Superlative! Das Bauwerk wurde Mitte der 80er Jahre fertiggestellt und wird auch das Stonehenge Georgiens genannt. Doch ganz ehrlich, das echte Stonehenge, das ich auch schon besucht habe, wirkt dagegen, wie ein lächerlicher Steinhaufen. Man fühlt sich hier wie eine winzige Ameise in einem Herr der Ringe Film.

The 16 stone columns illustrating the life of Jesus Christ as well as events in Georgian history are between 30 and 35m high, but appear much taller. When walking around the monument, you can also enjoy magnificent views of Tbilisi and Lake Tbilisi. Unfortunately, this landmark is not accessible by public transport. But I recommend you to use the Uber alternative "Bolt". With this app, you pay no more than 5€ per ride from the city centre. For some reason this place is still quite undiscovered by tourism. So it's really a hidden gem and clearly my number one place to visit in Tbilisi.

Die 16 Steinsäulen, die das Leben von Jesus Christus sowie Ereignisse aus der georgischen Geschichte darstellen, sind zwischen 30 und 35m hoch, wirken aber noch um einiges größer. Bei der Umrundung kann man außerdem herrliche Ausblicke auf Tiflis und den Tiflis-See genießen. Mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln ist das Monument leider nicht erreichbar. Aber ich empfehle euch die Uber-Alternative "Bolt". Mit dieser App bezahlt ihr nicht mehr als 5€ pro Fahrt vom Stadtzentrum. Dieser Ort ist vom Tourismus seltsamerweise noch recht unentdeckt. Es handelt sich also wirklich um einen Geheimtipp und um meine klare Nummer eins, was die Sehenswürdigkeiten von Tiflis betrifft.
