We all know that when it comes to sequels things can get messy, this applies almost universally to any entertainment product: video games, series, comics, books, and of course, movies. I remember seeing Iron Man 2 in the cinema and being the 16 year old Alejandro I thought it was the most amazing thing in the world, but years have passed and I've read many times that this movie is easily the worst one in the Iron Man trilogy, something that caught my attention because I remembered it as a great movie. Today, after having seen Iron Man 2 again, I can understand why the fandom loathes this movie so much, but I can also understand why the 16 years old Alejandro enjoyed it so much.
So without any further ado, let's start!
For no one was a surprise that Marvel began producing this film after the overwhelming success that was Iron Man, and this first film was a boom that needed to be exploited, not only by the Avengers project but by the Tony Stark’s success. The film’s shooting began in 2009 and it was released on April 28, 2010, Jon Favreau returns to be behind the direction, and, of course, Robert Downey Jr. comes back as Tony Stark/Iron Man, while Gwyneth Paltrow stays on as Pepper Pots, Don Cheadle takes Terrence Howard's place as James Rhodes/War Machine, Scarlett Johansson makes her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, and this time around the antagonists are Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer and Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko.
The film begins by showing us the press conference that took place at the end of the first movie, when Tony Stark reveals his identity as Iron Man, however this press conference is being witnessed from Russia by Ivan Vanko and his dying father Anton Vanko, who after seeing Tony Stark at the press conference dies, but not before telling Ivan that "that should be him". After his father's death we are shown Ivan building an arc reactor and also a wall full of Tony Stark's press releases, confirming that there is some resentment between the Stark family and the Vanko family that the plot will develop around. Back to the States and with Tony, well.... He is still the eccentric billionaire he has always been, only he has stopped Stark Industries weapons production and is now dedicated to preserving the peace, the thing is that the US government starts demanding Tony that he has to hand over the armor and that it is a crime to own it as it is considered a specialized weapon, obviously Tony refuses but the accusations and pressure doesn't stop, The Senate alleges that there are military scientific groups about to recreate this technology so this has become a potential global threat, however Tony hacks the system and shows that this is not only a lie but that other countries are at least 20 years away from being able to recreate the technology of his suit, leaving the Senate ridiculous. On the other hand, Ivan Vanko gets a fake passport and somehow manages to get to Monaco, where the Monaco Grand Prix is taking place and where Tony Stark is competing, all with the intention of killing him and putting an end once and for all to his family's revenge. There is also a subplot revolving around the arc reactor in Tony's chest and how it is slowly poisoning his blood with palladium.
That's all there is to say about the plot, which while it's not bad... It's not exactly great either. There are several moments that are interesting, such as Tony acting irresponsibly because he doesn't know how to deal with everything that comes with being a hero and on top of that overwhelmed by the poisoning of his blood that will kill him sooner rather than later; acting in such a self-destructive way is a clear way to evade the reality that constantly tortures him, and yes, it is interesting, the problem is that Tony was supposed to have already learned to be someone much more responsible after the events of the first movie. Moving on to the positives, the visual effects are amazing and of a high standard by today's standards, I think it even looks much better and natural than in more recent films; the soundtrack is still great in terms of theme selection but not so much with the original compositions; the action scenes are simple but I have to say that I like them a lot, they are just as I would imagine some guys wearing mechanized iron suits; the movie in general is very entertaining because it's quite colorful, it keeps the humor that made the first installment successful, Robert Downey Jr continues to steal the show with his interpretation of Tony Stark, it's almost as if he was born for this role. And yes, so far so good, this is the part that the 16 year old Alejandro enjoys, so why so much hate with this movie?
The main reason could be that this movie is completely irrelevant in the grand scale of the MCU, it has absolutely nothing new to add beyond the introduction of Black Widow (which they could have saved for Avengers or any other movie and it would have worked just the same), Tony Stark's development arc is pretty much the same as the first movie, only this time we're given a little more information about his past and his relationship with his dad, who by the way, had conveniently discovered a new element that was conveniently the one Tony Stark needed in order to replace the palladium in his chest and save his life and conveniently left him a videotaped message that he conveniently hadn't seen until that day.... Really?
But without fear of being wrong, the worst by far are the "villains". Yes, in plural and in quotes, because they really leave a lot to be desired. First of all we have Ivan Vanko, who is practically mute and doesn't have a single interesting dialogue in the whole movie, his motivation feels cliché and on top of being a practically monosyllabic character, it's impossible to empathize with him in any way. The other antagonist is Justin Hammer, the main supplier of weapons to the US government after Stark Industries stopped their weapons production. The only thing I have to say about this character is that he is ridiculous and unbearable. Once again Marvel fails when it comes to making antagonists for their movies, I get that Tony Stark is the main character, but he already had a whole introductory movie where we got to know his story, why not take advantage of this to give a little more screen time to the villains and make us really feel that there is a conflict that needs to be resolved? I'm not a screenwriter and I know it's a complicated job, because not only do they have to satisfy the needs of the audience but they also have to stick to guidelines set by the companies in question, but come on... This is almost silly.
I think the main problem with Iron Man 2 is that, motivated by the first film’s success, this one came out too soon just to generate more profit, neglecting the planning process and delivering a film that is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It's possible to watch the whole MCU by skipping this movie and we won't miss anything, because even James Rhodes who already wore the War Machine suit, doesn't make an appearance again until Iron Man 3, and Iron Man 3 takes place AFTER Avengers, leaving Iron Man 2 in a pretty forgettable place. The funny thing is that the movie itself is not bad, in fact as I said at the beginning, it's quite entertaining and easy to watch, but beyond that it doesn't contribute absolutely anything, it repeats the previous formula almost verbatim so it feels like a constant deja vu. Maybe if this movie had seen the light after Avengers it would have helped not only to structure the script better but also to not burn Tony Stark's character so fast, giving a much more worthy trilogy to the one who started this whole universe, but this is what we have and we must be content with them. Speaking for me, I'm still fascinated by how my perspective of these movies is changing as I watch them after so long, I think at the end of the day that's a good thing because, it would be a little worrying if the years passed and I was still the same 16 years old Alejandro, don't you think?

Todos sabemos que cuando de secuelas se trata las cosas pueden ponerse complicadas, esto aplica casi universalmente para cualquier producto de entretenimiento: videojuegos, series, comics, libros, y por supuesto, películas. Recuerdo haber visto Iron Man 2 en el cine y siendo el Alejandro de 16 años me pareció la cosa más increíble del mundo, pero los años han pasado y he leído muchas veces que fácilmente esta película es la peor de la trilogía de Iron Man, cosa que llamaba bastante mi atención pues, yo recordaba una película genial. Hoy, luego de haber visto Iron Man 2 de nuevo, puedo entender porque el fandom aborrece tanto a esta película, pero también puedo entender porque el Alejandro de 16 años la disfrutó tanto.
Así que sin más preámbulos, ¡comencemos!
Para nadie era una sorpresa que Marvel comenzara a producir esta película después del arrollador éxito que fue Iron Man, y es que esta primera película fue un boom que necesitaba ser aprovechado, no solo por el proyecto Avengers sino por el éxito que tuvo el personaje de Tony Stark. El rodaje de la película comenzó en 2009 y fue estrenada el 28 de abril del 2010, Jon Favreau vuelve a estar tras la dirección del film, y, lógicamente, Robert Downey Jr. vuelve como Tony Stark/Iron Man, mientras que Gwyneth Paltrow se mantiene como Pepper Pots, Don Cheadle toma el lugar de Terrence Howard en el papel de James Rhodes/War Machine, Scarlett Johansson hace su debut en el Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel como Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, y como los antagonistas de esta entrega tenemos a Sam Rockwell como Justin Hammer y a Mickey Rourke como Ivan Vanko.
La película comienza mostrándonos la rueda de prensa que tuvo lugar al final del primer film, cuando Tony Stark revela su identidad como Iron Man, sin embargo esta rueda de prensa está siendo presenciada desde Rusia por Ivan Vanko y su moribundo padre Anton Vanko, quién luego de ver a Tony Stark en la rueda de prensa fallece, no sin antes decirle a Ivan que “ese debería ser el”. Luego de la muerte de su padre se nos muestra a Ivan construyendo un reactor arc y además, una pared llena de notas de prensa de Tony Stark, confirmando que hay algún resentimiento entre la familia Stark y la familia Vanko sobre el que se desarrollara la trama. De vuelta a los Estados Unidos y con Tony pues… El sigue siendo el excéntrico multimillonario de siempre, solo que ha detenido la producción armamentística de Stark Industries y ahora se dedica a preservar la paz, la cuestión es que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos comienza a exigirle a Tony que tiene que entregar la armadura y que es un delito poseerla ya que es considerada un arma especializada, obviamente Tony se niega pero las acusaciones y la presión no se detienen, El Senado alega que hay grupos científicos militares a punto de recrear esa tecnología por lo que esto se vuelve una potencial amenaza mundial, sin embargo Tony hackea el sistema y demuestra que esto no es solo mentira sino que los demás países están al menos, a 20 años de distancia de poder recrear la tecnología de su traje, dejando al Senado en ridículo. Por otra parte, Ivan Vanko consigue un pasaporte falso y de alguna manera consigue llegar hasta Mónaco, donde está teniendo lugar el Grand Prix de Mónaco y donde Tony Stark está compitiendo, todo esto con intención de matarlo y poner fin de una vez por todas a la venganza de su familia. También hay una subtrama que gira alrededor del reactor arc en el pecho de Tony y de cómo este está envenenando lentamente su sangre con el paladio.
Esto es todo lo que hay que decir con respecto a la trama, que si bien no está mal… Tampoco está precisamente bien. Hay varios momentos que resultan interesantes, como por ejemplo Tony actuando de manera irresponsable porque no sabe cómo lidiar con todo lo que conlleva ser un héroe y encima abrumado por el envenenamiento de su sangre que más pronto que tarde lo matará; actuar de manera tan autodestructiva es una clara forma de evadir la realidad que lo tortura constantemente, y si, es interesante, el problema es que se supone que ya Tony había aprendido a ser alguien mucho más responsable después de los eventos de la primera película. Siguiendo con los aspectos positivos, los efectos visuales son increíbles y de gran nivel para estándares de hoy, creo que incluso se ve mucho mejor y natural que en películas más recientes; la banda sonora sigue siendo genial en cuanto a la selección de temas pero no tanto con las composiciones originales; las escenas de acción son simples pero tengo que decir que me gustan bastante, son justo como me imaginaría las peleas de unos tipos metidos en unos trajes de hierro mecanizados; la película en general resulta muy entretenida porque es bastante vistosa, conserva el humor que llevó al éxito a la primera entrega, Robert Downey Jr sigue robándose el show con su interpretación de Tony Stark, es casi como si hubiese nacido para este papel. Y sí, todo bien hasta aquí, esta es la parte que el Alejandro de 16 años disfruta, entonces, ¿Por qué tan odiada?
La principal razón podría ser que esta película es completamente irrelevante en la gran escala del UCM, no tiene absolutamente nada nuevo que aportar más allá de la introducción de Black Widow (que se la hubiesen podido guardar para Avengers o para cualquier otra película y hubiese funcionado igual), el arco de desarrollo de Tony Stark es casi igual al de la primera película, solo que esta vez nos dan un poco más de información de su pasado y de la relación con su papá, quien por cierto, convenientemente había descubierto un nuevo elemento que convenientemente era el que Tony Stark necesitaba para poder sustituir el paladio de su pecho y salvar su vida y convenientemente le dejó un mensaje grabado en video que convenientemente no había visto hasta ese día… ¿De verdad?
Pero sin temor a equivocarme, lo peor por MUCHO son los “villanos”. Si, en plural y entre comillas, porque de verdad dejan bastante que desear. En primer lugar tenemos a Ivan Vanko, quién es prácticamente mudo y no tiene ni un solo dialogo interesante en toda la película, su motivación se siente cliché y encima siendo un personaje prácticamente monosilábico, es imposible empatizar de alguna manera con él. El otro antagonista es Justin Hammer, el principal proveedor de armas del gobierno de los Estados Unidos luego de que Industrias Stark detuviera su producción de armas. Lo único que tengo que decir al respecto de este personaje es que es ridículo e insoportable. Nuevamente Marvel falla a la hora de hacer antagonistas para sus películas, entiendo que Tony Stark es el protagonista, pero ya tuvo toda una película introductoria en la que conocimos su historia, ¿por qué no aprovechar esto para darle un poco más de tiempo de pantalla a los villanos y así hacer que de verdad sintamos que hay un conflicto que debe ser resuelto? No soy guionista y sé que es un trabajo complicado, porque no solo deben satisfacer las necesidades del público sino que además deben atenerse a unos lineamientos establecidos por las compañías en cuestión, pero vamos… Esto es casi tonto.
Creo que el principal problema de Iron Man 2 es que motivado al éxito de la primera película, esta salió demasiado pronto solo para generar más ganancias, descuidando el proceso de planificación y entregando un film que se queda bastante en el medio de la nada. Es posible ver todo el UCM saltándose esta película y no nos perderemos de nada, porque incluso James Rhodes quién ya portaba el traje de War Machine, no vuelve a hacer aparición sino hasta Iron Man 3, y Iron Man 3 toma lugar DESPUÉS de Avengers, dejando a Iron Man 2 en un lugar bastante olvidable. Lo curioso es que la película en sí misma no es mala, de hecho como dije al principio, resulta bastante entretenida y sencilla de ver, pero más allá de eso no aporta absolutamente nada, repite la formula anterior casi al pie de la letra por lo que se siente como un constante deja vu. Quizás si esta película hubiese visto luz después de Avengers hubiese ayudado no solo a estructurar mejor el guión sino también a no quemar tan rápido al personaje de Tony Stark, dándole así una trilogía mucho más digna a quién empezó con todo este universo, pero esto es lo que tenemos y debemos conformarnos con ellos. Por mi parte sigo fascinado de como mi perspectiva de estas películas va cambiando conforme las veo después de tanto tiempo, creo que al final del día eso es algo bueno pues, sería un poco preocupante que los años pasaran y yo siguiera siendo el mismo Alejandro de 16 años, ¿no creen?
Iron Man 2 is definitely one of those movies to watch on a Sunday afternoon, when you don't want to think too much or pay too much attention, it does its job of entertaining you for two hours but don't expect much more than that, and honestly I would choose to skip this MCU movie because, as I said, it doesn't contribute absolutely nothing transcendental to the rest of the universe. Definitivamente Iron Man 2 es de esas películas para ver un domingo en la tarde, cuando no quieres pensar mucho ni prestar demasiada atención, cumple con su cometido de entretenerte por dos horas pero no esperes mucho más de eso, y sinceramente yo optaría por omitir esta película del UCM porque, como ya dije, no aporta absolutamente nada trascendental para el resto del universo. ¿Y tú? ¿Crees que Iron Man 2 es una mala película? ¿O por el contrario aún la disfrutas como el primer día que la viste?

Estas películas se miden por la calidad del villano y tienes razón, no están a la altura de lo que se esperaba. Cuando vi el trailer pensé que seria tremenda, pero me sigo quedando con la primera. Peor lo pero seria la tercera parte y lo que hicieron con el Mandarín.
La película en sí no es mala, pero no se siente cómo que esté planeada s formar parte del UCM sino más bien ser una secuela palomitera y listo. Y pues sí, lo del Mandarín fue una catástrofe y hasta quiero evitar esa película jajajaja.
Estoy de acuerdo con tus críticas, aunque siento que curiosamente esos defectos hacen que esa película haya envejecido bien… me recuerda a tiempos más simples, la escala del MCU no era tan grande y estaban probando el terreno.
Tienes razón, pero yo siento que el pecado de ésta película es que se nota a leguas que fue un producto netamente comercial y que no se planificó muy bien dentro del UCM, cómo dije al principio, había que aprovechar el boom de Iron Man como fuera, por eso no se siente que aporte nada no sólo al UCM sino s la misma fase dónde se desarrolla.
Que decepción es Iron Man 2, por momentos me gustó la gran conexión que tienen con el anterior film y no tanto por mostrar desde el comienzo la escena en dónde revela que él es Iron Man sino porque Ivan es ayudado por la organización de los 10 añillos, eso era algo que tenía muchas expectativas y todas fueron desechadas por Iron Man 3 que para mí también es un mal film; tienes razón con lo simple y malo que son los villanos en esta película, pienso que justamente de esta historia la mayoría de las películas del MCU presentaron a un gran número de muy malos personajes que eran antagonistas de sus películas.
Está película tengo tiempo que no la he vuelto a ver y no tengo nada de hacerlo.
A mí esta película me gustaba bastante por la espectacularidad, no puedo negar que con eso cumple mas que bien, pero incluso para ser films domingueros esta en particular se queda muy corta. Los malos villanos lamentablemente van a ser recuerrentes en todas estas películas, se salvarán dos o tres a lo sumo.
Yo no soy de los que disfrutan ver la misma varias veces, alguna seguro que la veo 2 veces si la considero bastante bueno pero por lo general no me gusta repetir porque me parece aburrido. Dicho eso, yo nunca antes le había prestado demasiada atención al personaje de Iron Man hasta que salieron los films de Marvel, después de empezar a ver esos films, debo decir que me hice un gran fan de ese personaje. Creo que sus pelis son buenas pero no necesariamente para repetirlas.
