When I saw a trailer of this movie in the upcoming session on the Netflix app, I knew it was something I had to watch. It had this unique way of telling a black man's story during a time of extreme racism. So I did what every chronic movie lover would do, SET A REMINDER.

The movie was finally released on Netflix on the 23rd of September 2022 and I got to watch it at midnight. I must say that I had it at the back of my mind, Tyler Perry will surely kill it and I was expecting nothing less.

I became a huge fan and supporter of his movies because of how he uses all the available tools at his disposal to tell black stories to the fullest. And this newfound love started right from ACRIMONY and A FALL FROM GRACE.

The movie, A JAZZMAN's BLUES talks about the story of forbidden love, racial segregation, a mother's love, and above all the bond that exists amongst black folks.

At first, the movie started with this slow vibe that keep me wondering if it was the right movie to watch alone. The trailer which I watched days back before the movie's release, gave give me the idea that this movie would be something related to love. And as luck would have it, it was exactly as I expected, not too much and not below the expectation bar.

In the first scene, after we the viewers have been introduced to the casts and crew involved in the movie's production, I gained an insight into the world of the 1940s where a community-based style of living was the order of the day. You will get to see how the black people occupied a specific region, filled with nothing but their kind, living their lives as immigrants or people who have been segregated. If you are someone that can be triggered by such, Then I must say you should check it out and get TRIGGERED.

Because remember we can't keep calm for long

Like I always tell my friends and relative, FORBIDDEN LOVE is sometimes the most interesting form of love. The thought alone that you should not be in love with this person because of certain differences or hindrances makes the love story even more intriguing.

Don't forget, what you keep shouting at children not to do, might actually be what they will end up doing.

Then relate it to love,

Who you say they shouldn't love might just be whom they end up loving.

After Tyler Perry succeeded in making us understand what it looks in the early 1940s for the blacks, he still did a nice job in making us, or rather I understand that even in extreme conditions, humans will still find the time to exhibit love.

It may sound bizarre or strange to your ears but check it out in the movie, you will see that even though times were extremely harsh and hard for these black forks, like how they were left to attend to only the brown collar jobs with little pay after so much stress, they were still able to love. If you don't find this marvelous, then check your marvel system. For me, I would say if I was left in such harsh conditions with ridiculous pay, then I would probably feel too shallow to find love.

But it wasn't the same for Bayou and Leanne. Their love story still had time to blossom amidst that bad situation of things. Even when they saw that it was difficult for them to be seen during the daytime, they figured out a way to hook up at night. I find this the magic in their love story.

What kept me glued and interested in this love story was the change in things. As some customs suggest, the man has to be the one to make the advance if he's truly interested in a woman. This time, Tyler Perry changed that in this love story. After Bayou and Leanne met, you would observe that Bayou was the shy one in the relationship at first, cause tell me why would it be the lady sending love letters of where to meet up and time to meet up? I found this truly interesting, cause for the very first time I get to see the lady making the advances, this sounds like boldness when in love, I must add.

Let me tell you, and jot this down

When a man is madly in love,
He is fucking cheap to get.
Oops!!!!! I used the F word, but again who cares......

Meet Some Characters that stood out for me

Citsy

When they say someone is a true family friend, Just say that person is a CITSY cause damn she was phenomenal and outstanding. Tell me how can one put up such a performance? When my love for her grew was from her scene with Leanne, after receiving a hot slap, she didn't remain calm and quiet about the slap because Leanne belonged to a higher social class but she damn retaliated with a banger, blessing Leanne with a slap of a kind. That scene was MAD!!!!!!!

Mr. Ira

I like to describe this man as a white man with some black experience. HOLY SHIT!!!!!!! This man has seen what Nigerians like to call SHEGE, (bad experiences).
In the beginning, he was brought to mama's place, I felt he was fucked up on heroin or coke but it turned out he was going through shit too. With Mr. Ira, I figured out that don't be quick to judge a person because of the color of his skin, I thought Mr. Ira can't know what it feels like to be segregated but it turned out he does. Watch A JAZZMAN'S BLUES and see what I am talking about.

Willie Earl

Currently, by many, this guy should be seen as the new asshole in existence. And yes he really is. The guy is filled with hatred, jealousy, and a huge pact of stupidity. Right from 19, he already exhibited traces of childish foolishness mixed with the longing for love. This guy was really FUCKED and I just have to admit it. At the end of the movie, you will see why the guy's behavior is tantamount to drilling.

MAMA

The last character that killed it for me was no other person than mama. They always say leave the best for the last and that is what I just did. Mama comes in as my favorite person. The lady behind this character nailed it. She was that sign of hope we all need as humans, remember that one person you just need to be on the same page for you to feel good, well she's that person and more. All she did that got my full support and love is how she encouraged Bayou to keep going with the mindset that it will be okay. She didn't have to say it but the way she displayed her actions was enough for me.

FINALLY,

I cannot say much more than Tyler Perry killed it on this one and how he used music to explain the story of a black family reminded me of the negro spirituals we Africans sang during our time as slaves.

GO WATCH THE MOVIE GUYS
