Disney's The Little Mermaid 2023: A Movie Review

in Movies & TV Shows11 months ago

Yesterday, I had a date with @dennnmarc. One of the things we decided to do during our date was to watch the controversial and word of the mouth live-action of Disney's The Little Mermaid.

The live adaptation of The Little Mermaid was directed by Rob Marshall. Halle Bailey was chosen to portray Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Eric, and Melissa McCarthy as the villain Ursula. The movie was co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Lucamar Productions, and Marc Platt Productions.

STORYLINE

Ariel, the youngest daughter of Triton, yearns to explore the surface and the human world. Despite Triton's prohibition against Ariel interacting with humans, Ursula's influence tempts Ariel to defy her father's orders. In exchange for a human form, Ursula offers a deal: she will take Ariel's voice. Within three days, if Ariel fails to receive a true love's kiss, her transformation into a human will become permanent, she would be mute, and she will be unable to return to the sea.

Within three days, Ariel embarks on her journey as a human, while Ursula actively seeks ways to prevent her from achieving her goals.

The live adaptation of "The Little Mermaid" largely followed the storyline of the original animated version of the movie, with a few notable changes.

  • One significant change is the emphasis on Ariel's desire to explore the human world driven by her curiosity and longing for freedom, rather than solely because of Eric.
  • Another difference is that Eric now shares Ariel's mindset of wanting to break free from their current worlds.
  • In this live adaptation, it is Ariel who ultimately defeats and kills Ursula, as opposed to Eric in the animated film.

CONTROVERSY

Months prior to its release, the film generated controversy when Halle Bailey, an African-American actress, was chosen to portray Ariel, the iconic lead character in "The Little Mermaid." This decision ignited heated discussions and debates about Disney's intentions: whether they aimed to authentically represent black individuals or if it was merely a calculated move to gain publicity and draw in viewers.

Nevertheless, days after the film was released here in the Philippines, it gain positive reviews breaking the initial negative impressions of the critics.

CINEMATOGRAPHY and CGI

One impressive aspect of the film is how well they used Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). Just like in other Disney movies, the visuals are captivating and look very realistic. The way they portrayed the mermaids gives you the feeling that they are actually underwater, and the way they interact with the sea creatures looks so genuine. I was also impressed by the way they paid attention to the details of the mermaid characters' hair. It looked so beautiful as it floated and moved with the water, just like how our hair strands would behave underwater. It made the characters feel more natural.

The cinematography in the film is excellent. I was particularly captivated by a scene where a ship battles against a raging storm, desperately trying to stay afloat. It evoked strong emotions in me and filled me with concern for the characters' fate. The camera angles and the clever use of filters successfully set the atmosphere, intensifying the impact of the moment. This attention to detail is also evident in other scenes, where the filmmakers skillfully engage the viewers and enhance their overall experience of the film.

MUSIC and SOUND EFFECTS

It's undeniable that music and sound effects are essential in enhancing the movie-watching experience. In the live adaptation of "The Little Mermaid," they made smart choices when it came to using music in specific scenes. For example, there's a part where Sebastian and the other sea creatures sing to convince Ariel not to leave the ocean and venture to the surface. Instead of simply speaking the lines, they made it more creative and enjoyable by singing them with an upbeat tune and melody. This added a sense of fun and made the scene more engaging to watch. Similarly, during more serious moments, they used a more melodramatic tone while singing the lines.

Moreover, the film cleverly incorporated sound effects to enhance the audience's emotional connection to the characters. When the characters experienced different emotions, such as excitement, fear, or sadness, corresponding sound effects were introduced to intensify those feelings. These thoughtful musical choices added depth and emotion to the film, making it even more captivating and allowing the viewers to truly immerse themselves in the story.

MY VERDICT

To be honest, I wasn't really into Disney princesses before. However, due to the positive feedback, we heard about this film, we decided to give it a chance. Much to my surprise, by the time the movie ended, I had developed a genuine liking for it. I would rate it 9 out of 10. It's a film that appeals not only to children but also to the young at heart. It has a charming and heartwarming quality that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Sort:

This film has been the talk on social media especially because of the race swap of the main character. Honestly, I think the idea of representation in films is absurd. A person should be chosen to play a role if they're good enough and not if they just belong to a certain demographic. Other than that, I haven't really been into live remakes ever since I watched The Lion King. It's funny that they are called 'live action remakes' when the animals still have to be animated😅.

One significant change is the emphasis on Ariel's desire to explore the human world driven by her curiosity and longing for freedom, rather than solely because of Eric.

Ok this change may be something worth seeing the film for. The animated movie presented us a story of young and innocent love which was good. I don't know if I'd choose personal ambition over genuine selfless love but I'd give it a chance.

I'm glad you enjoyed this film. Nice reading from you!

When it comes to the representation of races in a film, my opinion is divided. There are other ways to represent them and show support. However, if the chosen race can deliver justice for the portrayal of the character, then it's okay. After watching the film, I think Halle Bailey performed the given role well :))

Thank you for checking this out :))

I watched the live action movie only because my daughter wanted to watch it. Haha. Ariel is my least favorite disney princess. But when I read the real story by Hans Christian Andersen, I had a whole new respect for the little mermaid. The movies made her this selfish spoiled-brat princess when really, she's the opposite. Still, the movie was awesome. We watched it on 3D so we were able to enjoy the special effects a little bit more. I still hoped they showed a little bit more of the real story though.

The movies made her this selfish spoiled-brat princess when really, she's the opposite.

That's what I'm thinking while watching the film, hahaha. In the back of my mind, I question Ariel's decision and why she likes to explore the human world. If only she knew how cruel this world can be, hahaha.

Ohh, the film is available for 3D viewing din po pala, sayang wala kasi yatang ganun sa sinehan na napuntahan namin. Never tried 3D and hoping na sana next time maexperience namin hahaha. Thank you po checking this out!

I watched this movie. And I also heard the feedback of viewers about the new Ariel... She isn't bad anyway . There shouldn't be discrimination here..
As I said to the lady at home, Ariel should be dark, because she lives in the sea 😂😂... Anyway, the queen was dark as well... Maybe they were matched? 😅... Dark queen, white king.. I liked the ending where the mermaids and humans united...
!PIZZA

I agree there should be no discrimination. Sadly we can't control the mind of others who choose to be racist and misogynist. Maybe this film can help to also raise awareness and maybe normalize black people being the main characters in a movie.

As I said to the lady at home, Ariel should be dark, because she lives in the sea

hahaha! you have a great point there 😂. Probably anyone who's exposed to the ocean will get dark because of sunlight hahaha

I have no plans of watching the film but after reading your post, it's seems like I've gotten interested in the film. Budol yern 😂
I haven't kept up to date with the controversy but there's nothing wrong with Ariel being of color. She's at sea anyways, it's kinda natural.
Seems like the effects are really great. But anyways, I'll just wait til it will be available on Disney+ 😌

Naks, mukhang nag iimprove ang aking persuasion skills, eme HAHAHA. Pwede na mambudol

It's really cool to see different interpretations and representations in movies so I also have no issues with Halle Bailey being with the main character.

Sana lahat may Disney+.

Hehe

Kelan nyo balak manood? Enjoy watching po. I am happy that this movie review added an excitement in your plan to watch the film :))

Thank you for checking this out :))

In light of these discussions, I'd like to pose a question: How do you think diverse casting choices in films contribute to a more inclusive and representative entertainment industry?

How do you think diverse casting choices in films contribute to a more inclusive and representative entertainment industry?

Firstly, diverse casting breaks stereotypes and biases, providing representation for underrepresented communities. It empowers marginalized groups, encouraging them to pursue their dreams in the entertainment industry. Lastly, as entertainment holds considerable influence over society and culture, prioritizing diverse casting can promote equality and challenge biases. It helps reshape perspectives, foster understanding and empathy, and initiate discussions on important social issues.

hehe, thanks for checking this out!

If it also appeals to the young at heart too then it's definitely a must watch. I've seen the trailers of the movie but I still make out time to watch it; maybe because I had a few doubts as to how it would turn out.

This was an amazing review ✨

Thank you for checking this out @wongi. I'm glad you like this review :))
