There's something special about the experience of watching a film shooting in the dark. I had been hearing about Everything Everywhere All at Once for months, but is often the case with such risky productions without major stars —No offense to Jamie Lee Curtis'— it is only talked about among the Cinephiles until it is nominated for an Oscar.
I saw an opportunity to watch an interesting film that I knew almost nothing about and I took it. And I think that's exactly how this work should be watched. For that reason, if you haven't watched it, you should do it soon before reading what follows. But if you're not so convinced, I'll try to make sure the rest of the post ends up motivating you.
Total confusion
I spent half of the film confused and laughing at how wacky it was. At a certain point calling it ridiculous was quite logical. The use of absurd humour is constant and clever, but you don't pick up on it right away. It doesn't make any sense at first.
But the film progressively justifies itself until it delivers a powerful message. Everything Everywhere All at Once is well represented by its title. If I had to summarise it beyond that, I'd have to say that it's an intense and convoluted way of showing how we fail to value family and the everyday.
Everything Everywhere All at Once is not just a reflection that makes us appreciate family, love and the little things, but delves into many philosophical aspects to the point of reasoning about the ultimate question: what is the meaning of existence? And it answers these important matters in its own way.
But wait, don't jump to conclusions. In the end, this film is a comedy at almost every turn. And that's what makes it so great and innovative. Instead of complicating itself with a tedious and slow narrative that makes it too enjoyable for some and not enough for most, it tries to make you laugh first and then brings up the deep topics and tries to keep you laughing.
High quality comedy
The jokes are so simple that you don't notice all the philosophical baggage. That's why the formula is so good. Everything Everywhere All at Once makes you reflect a lot while thinking little. There is no more powerful medium to send a great message than humour.
The characters in the film seem like simple stereotypes until they start to become important representations of very human experiences. I think it doesn't matter if you fall into stereotypes if you develop them well, and that's what happens in this play.
A grumpy civil servant may have an emotional need that she can't meet. A childish, carefree man is perhaps the most capable of surviving. In that way, Everything Everywhere All at Once is a film that goes beyond appearances with clear intent. Everything ends up being much more interesting and profound than it first appears.
Sometimes simple means brilliant
Even a simplistic and seemingly cheap post-production is appropriate in the end. One of the bases for justifying this is that the plot emphasises the fact that in the vast and infinite universe everything is possible... Or maybe in the universes?
Everything Everywhere All at Once gives the impression of not taking itself seriously while it also tries to convince you not to take problems seriously. You can be a movie star in this reality and in another you’re just a rock staring at a lifeless land. What does it matter? You seek to be happy.
Physics also plays a big role in this film. The concept of the multiverse is in vogue. More than a few films and series have done some work around it in the last ten years. What makes this one different is the plot.
There are no scientists or superheroes here, everything revolves around a middle-aged mother who works as the owner of a laundromat. That’s why the film is so confusing at one point. We jump from a couple of everyday experiences into a sci-fi muddle without warning.
Everything Everywhere All at Once deserves the recognition it is getting. It’s almost recommended for the whole family –at least can be acceptable for teenagers—. It was already a hit at the box office and I’m sure it will be much more successful on streaming for a long time to come. No matter what kind of audience you are, it will hardly disappoint you.

Hay algo especial en la experiencia de ver una película a ciegas. Había escuchado de Everything Everywhere All at Once desde hace meses, pero como suele pasar con este tipo de producciones arriesgadas sin mayores estrellas —con el permiso de Jamie Lee Curtis—, solo se habla de ella entre los más conocedores hasta que es nominada a un Oscar.
Vi la oportunidad de ver una película interesante de la que no sabía casi nada y la aproveché. Y creo que es exactamente como esta obra debe verse. Por esa razón, si no la has visto, deberías verla pronto antes de leer lo que sigue. Pero si no estás tan convencido, voy a tratar de que el resto del post termine por motivarte.
Confusión total
Pasé la mitad de la película confundido y riéndome de lo disparatada que era. En cierto punto llamarla ridícula era lo más lógico. El uso del humor absurdo es constante e inteligente, pero no lo captas de inmediato. Al principio no tiene ningún sentido.
Pero la película se va justificando progresivamente hasta entregar un mensaje poderoso. Everything Everywhere All at Once se representa muy bien con su título. Si toca describirla resumidamente más allá de eso, tendré que decir que se trata de una forma intensa y rebuscada de demostrar como fallamos al darle valor a la familia y la cotidianidad.
Everything Everywhere All at Once no se queda en una reflexión que nos hace apreciar la familia, el amor y las cosas pequeñas, sino que llega a profundizar en muchos aspectos filosóficos hasta llegar a razonar sobre la pregunta máxima: ¿qué sentido tiene la existencia? Y responde a su manera sobre estos asuntos tan importantes.
Pero espera, no te apresures a sacar conclusiones. Al final esta película es una comedia en casi todo momento. Y eso es lo que la hace tan genial e innovadora. En lugar de complicarse con una narrativa tediosa y lenta que la haga muy disfrutable para algunos y no acabe de colar en la mayoría, trata de hacerte reír primero y luego plantea los temas profundos intentando que sigas riendo.
Comedia de alta calidad
Los chistes son lo suficientemente simples como para que no te des cuenta de toda esa carga filosófica. Por esa razón la fórmula es tan buena. Everything Everywhere All at Once te hace reflexionar mucho pensando poco. No existe un medio más poderoso para enviar un gran mensaje que el humor.
Los personajes de la película parecen estereotipos simples hasta que empiezan a convertirse en importantes representaciones de experiencias muy humanas. Yo creo que no importa que caigas en los estereotipos si les das un buen desarrollo, y eso es lo que ocurre en esta obra.
Una empleada publica malhumorada tal vez tiene una necesidad emocional que no logra cubrir. Un hombre infantil y despreocupado tal vez es el más capaz de sobrevivir. De ese modo, Everything Everywhere All at Once es una película que va más allá de las apariencias con clara intención. Todo acaba siendo mucho más interesante y profundo de lo que parece en un principio.
A veces simple significa brillante
Incluso una post producción simplista y aparentemente barata resulta consistente al final. Una de las bases para justificarlo es que la trama hace énfasis en el hecho de que en el vasto e infinito universo todo es posible… ¿O tal vez en los universos?
Everything Everywhere All at Once da la sensación de no tomarse en serio a sí misma mientras trata de convencerte de no tomarte en serio los problemas. Puedes ser una estrella de cine en esta realidad y en otra no eres más que una roca contemplando una tierra sin vida. ¿Qué importa? Tú busca ser feliz.
La física también tiene gran protagonismo en esta película. El concepto del multiverso está de moda. No son pocas las películas y series que han hecho algún trabajo alrededor de esto en los últimos diez años. Lo que hace que esta vez sea diferente es la trama.
Aquí no hay nada de científicos ni superhéroes, aquí todo gira alrededor de una madre de mediana edad que trabaja como propietaria de una lavandería. Es por eso que la película resulta tan confusa en cierto momento. Saltamos de un par de experiencias cotidianas a un embrollo de ciencia ficción sin advertencia previa.
Everything Everywhere All at Once merece el reconocimiento que está recibiendo. Es casi recomendable para toda la familia —al menos de 12 en adelante puede ser aceptable—. Ya fue un éxito en taquilla y estoy seguro de que será mucho más exitosa en streaming por mucho tiempo. No importa qué clase de público seas, difícilmente te decepcionará.
This movie has everything, drama, comedy, action, science fiction, a mix of genres that the directors have managed to create a solid product. I saw it last year when it was released and I still laugh remembering some absurd scenes like the stones in the mountain, the sausage fingers, everything the characters had to do to travel through the multiverse hahaha very funny. Total madness. I'm glad it won awards and Oscar nominations, I hope it gets a couple of statuettes.

Parece una película de la que me puede buscar, la voy a buscar. Me gusta este tipo de drama que no dicen ¡Wao! y mató a 50 je,je,je... Y estoy viendo algunas de humor, así que va en mi onda.
Te la recomiendo. Creo que es adecuada para cualquier tipo de audiencia.
Yo también vi esta película sin saber de qué se trataba y me encantó. Lo que mencionas sobre el buen uso de lo absurdo y la carga filosófica del film son dos cosas que me gustaron mucho. En su momento dije que esta cinta era el verdadero multiverso de la locura (lo dije en el mejor de los sentidos) y al cierre del año la ubiqué como la mejor película que había visto en 2022 por esa mezcla tan única que tiene, por lo que estoy contento con sus 11 nominaciones a los premios Oscar.
Me hiciste recordar la escena de las piedras, una de mis favoritas.

Completamente de acuerdo. Bueno, pero tampoco vi tantas películas este pasado año. Me falta al menos The Whale para decir con propiedad si es la mejor.
