I remember some years ago, I had heard the announcement that they were going to produce a movie titled Lords of Chaos, it would be as part of an adaptation of the book with the same title, but published in 1998 written by Michael Moynihan anf Didrik Søderlind, which relates in some way the fatal events within the Norwegian Black Metal scene, which involved real events of church burnings, suicides and murders in the quiet Norway of the 90s.
And for this adaptation, they would have as director the Swedish Jonas Åkerlund, known for having made music videos for musicians like Blink 182, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Metallica, Rammstein and others, as well as directing films like Spun (2002) and even a documentary about Madonna, but previously he was the drummer of the legendary Swedish band Bathory, and in a way was a person who knew about Black Metal, and therefore could make a better treatment of this filmography.
Recuerdo hace algunos años atrás, había escuchado el anuncio de que iban a producir una película titulada Lords of Chaos, sería como parte de una adaptación del libro con el mismo título, pero publicado en 1998 escrita por Michael Moynihan y Didrik Søderlind, que relata en cierta forma los acontecimientos fatales dentro de la escena del Black Metal noruego, donde estuvo involucrado hechos reales de quemas de iglesias, suicidios y homicidios en la tranquila Noruega de los años 90.
Y para esta adaptación, tendrían como director al sueco Jonas Åkerlund, conocido por haber realizado videos musicales de músicos como Blink 182, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Metallica, Rammstein y entró otros, así también la dirección de películas como Spun (2002) e incluso un documental sobre Madonna, pero anteriormente fue baterista de la legendaria banda sueca Bathory, y de cierta forma era una persona que conocía sobre el Black Metal, y por lo tanto pudiera hacer un mejor tratamiento de esta filmografía.
This film, which has a real basis, can be considered documentary or neorealist, although it does not depart from its fictional essence, in recreating moments that are not reliable to the facts as such, which has been criticized by many of those people who were part of those events, described in the film, with a narrative focused on two main characters; Euronymous played by Rory Culkin, younger brother of the famous Macaulay Culkin, and Varg Vikernes, played by Emory Cohen.
The real events had a great repercussion in Norway, since it was supposed to be a very quiet country, where almost no statistical figures of deficiencies and murders were handled, but for those years of the 90's, a group of young people created a style of heavier music and with its own characteristic, which was recognized as the wave of Norwegian Black Metal, but also developed a more negative vision, such as the burning of churches, because of the ideology that many of these young people propagated, as well as a series of murders, one for homophobic reasons and another for a matter of settling of scores between two musicians of the same scene.
Dicha película, que tiene basamentos reales, se puede considerar de tipo documentalista o neorealista, aunque no se aparta de su esencia ficticia, en recrear momentos que no son fidedignas a los hechos como tal, por lo cual ha sido criticado por muchas de esas personas que formaron parte de esos acontecimientos, que se describe en la película, con una narrativa enfocada en dos personajes principales; Euronymous interpretado por Rory Culkin, hermano menor del conocido Macaulay Culkin, y Varg Vikernes, interpretado por Emory Cohen.
Los hechos reales, tuvieron una gran repercusión en Noruega, ya que se suponía, que era un país muy tranquilo, donde casi no se manejaba cifras estadísticas de deficiencias y asesinatos, pero para esos años de los 90, un grupo de jóvenes, crearon un estilo de música más pesada y con una característica propia, que se reconocía como la ola del Black Metal noruego, pero que también se desarrolló una visión más negativa, como las quemas de iglesias, por la ideología que muchos de esos jóvenes propagaban, así como una serie de asesinatos, uno por motivos homofobicos y otro por un tema más de ajuste de cuentas entre dos músicos de esa misma escena.
That said, years after those events, a book was published, where it narrated what happened in those moments, although it has been catalogued as yellowish, by the survivors of all that movement, as the musician Varg Vikernes affirmed in several occasions, from the jail, serving his sentence for the murder of Euronymous.
So the film has a development from the book, which marks the trajectory from the beginning with the character of Euronymous until the fateful death, in the hands of who at some point was his friend and bandmate. With a perfect editing of the film, as well as a development of a suitable script with the story, although sometimes the dialogues sound a little childish, as well as a very good musical adaptation, and according to the theme, as part of the incidental music of the film.
Dicho esto, años después de esos acontecimientos, se publicó un libro, donde narraba lo ocurrido en esos momentos, aunque se le ha catalogado como amarillista, por parte de los sobrevivientes de todo ese movimiento, tal como lo afirmó en varias ocasiones el músico Varg Vikernes, desde la cárcel, cumpliendo su condena por el homicidio de Euronymous.
Entonces la película, tiene un desarrollo desde el libro, que marca la trayectoria desde el principio con el personaje de Euronymous hasta la fatídica muerte, en manos de quien en algún momento fuera su amigo y compañero de banda. Con un montaje perfecto de la película, así como un desarrolo de un guión adecuado con la historia, aunque en ocasiones los diálogos suenan un poco infantil, asimismo como una adaptación musical muy buena, y acorde con la temática, como parte de la música incidental de la película.
Now, the characters have certain resemblances to the real ones, although I could not say if they really had that personality, as the film reflects a transition between the two main characters, we see a Euronymous, who at first looked like a tough character, to become a calmer and more conscious person, shortly before his death; while Varg Vikernes, at first seen as a naive, withdrawn and perhaps kindly boy, then becomes a character full of anger and malevolent intentions, to the point of perpetrating church fires and the murder of Euronymous.
However, although there are certain discrepancies between what happened in reality and the film, one can get a little distracted in the fictional plot, after all it is a movie, and everything can be subject to change, but I would have expected that certain scenes or even certain characters were different, and that they had a more appropriate characterization without reaching the exaggeration. Said film, which was released in 2018, and which was filmed between some places in the UK and Sweden, resembling those places in Norway, where these characters were present and of those events that is part as an aspect history within the musical genre Black Metal.
Suddenly it is not the kind of film, which has an appeal to the general public, because of all the above mentioned, and that relationship with the musical genre of metal, but still anyone can see it, without having to be a fan of this music or just knowing that history, it is not something that is excluded, but it seeks to have a greater reach to the general public.
Ahora, los personajes tienen ciertos parecidos a los reales, aunque no sabría decir si de verdad tenían esa personalidad, así como en la película se refleja una transición entre los dos personajes principales, vemos a un Euronymous, que al principio se veía como un personajes rudo, a llegar ser una persona más calmada y conciente, poco antes de su muerte; mientras que Varg Vikernes, al principio se veía como un chico ingenuo, retraído y quizás amable, para luego convertirse en un personaje lleno de ira e intenciones malévolas, hasta el punto del el mismo perpetrar incendios de iglesias y el homicidio de Euronymous.
Sin embargo, a pesar de existir ciertas discrepancia entre lo que sucedió en la realidad y la película, uno se puede distraer un poco en la trama ficticia, al final es una película, y todo puede estar sujeta a cambios, pero hubiese esperado que ciertas escenas o incluso ciertos personajes fueran diferentes, y que tuvieran una caracterización más adecuado sin llegar a la exageración. Dicha película, que fue estrenada en 2018, y que fue filmada entre algunos parajes de Reino Unido y Suecia, asemejandose a esos sitios de Noruega, donde estuvieron presentes estos personajes y de esos acontecimientos que forma parte como un aspecto historia dentro del género musical Black Metal.
De repente no es el tipo de película, que tenga un atractivo para el público en general, debido a todo lo mencionado anteriormente, y esa relación con ese género musical del metal, pero aun así cualquier persona puede verla, sin tener que ser fan de esta música o el simple hecho de saber esa historia, no es algo que se excluya, sino que se busca tener un mayor alcance a ese público en general.

Estoy segura de lo que dices, que no es una película para todo el mundo, sobretodo por el genero de la música, por mi parte no me gusta el metal, pero puede ser una opción interesante de ver para conocer la historia. Genial por tu recomendación.

Being a metalhead myself, this sounds like an interesting story, but I have to say fictionalized documentaries are not my preferred genre exactly for the reason of blurring the line between fact and fiction.. Especially when they portray serious events such as this one. I am curious to see the movie!
