Remembering The OG Splinterland Days

A game I had bought on kickstarter a few months back is finally getting released and so that had me back in Kickstarter checking things out again. I stumbled into the Splinterlands kickstarter I had bought into back in 2018 and thought it would be cool to write a little post about the OG days.

Back in 2018 it was called steem monsters and ran on the steem blockchain. But with all the wild and crazy which I'll get into later it became splinterlands a much more fitting name with no ties to a blockchain name which was a very smart move.

In 2018 I was working both full time in a new business startup and starting to wrap that up and transition into the launch of my own primary business. It was a year of heavy investing and making moves and honestly looking back at it a TON of risk. Lots of struggles and some successes now has me where I am today in trying to make a full time income online through crypto (in a bear market might I add lol) while transitioning away from the business. Why? I don't want to be working my butt off anymore. I want to buy a plot of land build and grow and create with my hands again. I honestly miss the physical work like that and knowing I created something myself. I guess that's why I got started in business and creating my own in the first place.

One of those such jumps was buying the kickstarter for Splinterlands.

What Was In the Kickstarter

At the time I had bought the $1,500 package which meant I got to design my own legendary summoner. As you can see back in 2018 Splinterlands was small. A huge successful campaign was $88,000 of which $1,500 was me for the kick starter.

The summoner I created with the team is none other than the OG water splinter Valnamor

It's important to note that before I bought into this I was building my Alpha deck however small and not maxed it was my start into the game. Back then I don't even think you earned DEC rewards. You simply battled and just had fun as crazy as that sounds!

I ended up maxing two almost three decks of beta during these times and fell in love with the game playing it daily.

The Next Phase

After that was released untamed and I will admit I slacked off big time. Untamed came at a weird time when all hell broke loose and steem was aggressively taken over. I admit at that time I was crushed and I walked away for almost a year. To me at the time I had written off steem (and later I found Hive) off as a loss. I mean Hive was trading at like $0.05 at the time and steem was a freakin mess. I also stopped playing steemmonsters for a good year then as well. You have to understand at the time it looked like everything was blowing up and it was over. Looking back at things you'll always be like oh wow you were dumb you should have done this instead of that. But put yourself in the shoes of the person at the time and everything that was going on and ask yourself what choices you would have made.

At the time I was working 60+ hour weeks starting up a business so all my effort went into that which I believe in another reason why I just wrote it all off and just moved on.

Fast forward to about I think 2 years ago and I found hive and reactivated my account and started to learn everything going on. Since then I've invested heavily back into splinterlands now nearly a fully maxed out Chaos deck and a hard focus on SPS.

In fact I'm pretty much not getting super involved with Riftwatchers, Tower Defense, RUNI or Licenses because I feel SPS holds the higher value of what I want to stack. So here I am on my road towards 1 million SPS. Will we get there? I hope so but I am 100% doing it all with crypto and earnings from it and no FIAT.

The Future

Because of this $0.05 hive and thinking it was all over and working on other things I like to think I learned a lesson. That means when I see potential in a platform like LEO/CUB/Polycub now trading at around $0.05 average I think to myself well those are like Hive days where I should have packed in like crazy. Is it time to pack in like crazy on Splinterlands/LEO/Hive/CUB/Polycub and other tokens? I think so!

I still want one of those Valnamor cards lol

Epic story man, and the fact you saw the potential even before it exploded. Tip of the hat!

What's even more crazy is the fact that shortly after beta I was presented with the opporunity to become a heavy investor into Splinterlands from the team. It was a pretty big chunk of change with everything going on at the time I ultimately passed as the risk was just too high. I think it was something like a $20,000 investment. Which I'm sure if I would have done I'd be retired and have that plot of land right now lol. Always easy to say AFTER the fact. Still happy though and still see huge potential. There's so much to Splinterlands now in terms of passive income streams and more to come that it just feels like a smart move.

Yeah man, I think it'll be a nice passive income generator for a lot of people going forward. Hope so at least, I have a lot riding on it's success lolol

So it was 2018 then, I was in my final year of Engineering Graduation. Fully disconnected from the cryptocurrencies let alone play2earn games.

I joined Splinterlands 2 years later with a small budget from my savings. I wish I could invest more then.

Anyway, I'm glad to meet the maker of one of my 'fav card' the legendary Valnamor.
Heck, I wrote an article about him.. LOL..

Good to know those good'ol days...

Wish I would have invested more as well lol that's what we all say but I gotta say I'm very happy with what I did and still to this day even in this rather bear and beat up markets Splinterlands is holding up well. Valnamor still packs a serious punch in battles I often win with him huge advantage still.

I remember them old days, I wish I would not have combined so many alfa cards with beta though!

I do remember! I miss those early days! It is so awesome you got in early though! Have a great day! ~@clove71

Super cool indeed now I just wish I would have dumped 10x into it at the time lol. Also not have taken that break during the steem/hive craziness. All in all though super happy and only building like crazy every day.

Ahh those days! I remember at the time I thought it would be cool to play a game and earn. Little did I realise at the time, that some of the cards were worth thousands of dollars and still are. I remember buying packs for $2 too :)

I am glad that I have kept the majority of the cards from way back :)

I didn't know you helped design Valnamor. That was a great story and I like the way you approach the next phase too.
