Want to Grow? Prioritize Your Time

Everybody wants their accounts to be bigger. It's just a fact of life. We always want more. We look around and we see all the people that have more and we wish we had what they have. But what we don't see is what it took for them to get where they are. We focus on the results they have instead of the journey they took to get there.

Blackandrainbowline.gif

Michael Jordan was interviewed many years ago and the interviewer talked about how talented he was, arguably being the greatest basketball player to ever play the game. What Jordan said in response has always stuck with me. Paraphrasing because I don't know where the interview is anymore, he said that he realized he was blessed with an abundance of talent, but that very few people knew about the hours upon hours he spent in the gym practicing, in the weight room building his strength and endurance, and in his house eating properly and getting enough rest to keep his body performing at its peak.

Blackandrainbowline.gif

In other words, all the talent in the world won't help if we're not willing to put in the time to maximize that talent.
Blackandrainbowline.gif

Even with all that talent, probably the greatest asset Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Lionel Messi, Tiger Woods, etc. have is their ability to make themselves take action. There is no way these guys didn't struggle on a regular basis with "distractions". With their fame, parties were open to them 24/7. They could eat at the best restaurants, sit in the VIP section of any bar/club they wanted, take trips on private planes to virtually anyplace in the world, basically you name it, they had/have access to it. But they didn't. Why? Because they wanted to be better at their craft. They wanted to beat their opponents. And, truthfully, they probably wanted to GET PAID. But to do that, they needed to sacrifice some of the distractions and put in the work. They prioritized reaching their goals over what was fun and easy. Now obviously they weren't able to resist all of the distractions all of the time, but you get my point.

Blackandrainbowline.gif

This isn't rocket science, but it does take effort. Set some small attainable goals, make a plan, and do what you have to do to achieve those goals. Then do it again. Like I said in my last post, define your "worst" day and make sure you always do that at a minimum. That way, you're always moving forward.

Think about what you want your account to look like in 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, whatever. And then figure out what it will take to get there. You need to prioritize your success. Do you want your account to have 1000 Leo in one year? Then you need to prioritize making it happen. What do you have to do every day to get there? Prioritize engaging. Prioritize commenting and upvoting. Prioritize writing posts. Prioritize your time.

We've got 8 hrs a day for sleeping. One hour a day for eating. Half hour in the bathroom. 8-10 hours for working. That still leaves roughly 4 hours. How about prioritizing just one of those remaining hours towards building wealth? So we can eventually cut out that 8-10 hours working thing, right?

I mean, think about it, most of us spend those hours working just to survive, not to get rich. Doesn't it make sense to spend an hour a day doing something that can eliminate that grind?

The one thing we KNOW about Hive and its tribes is that if we put in the effort, we WILL grow. Period. How much is up to us. How fast is up to us. If we make it a priority to reach our goals, we WILL get there. There are countless people on here who have proven it over the last four years. Effort is rewarded, so if we prioritize making that effort, we'll get there too. It's a marathon, not a sprint, but every step forward is one step closer to our goals.

This is so easy to say but SO HARD to do !

With all the current distractions such as social meidas, news outlets, games, phones...

I am battling every day to focus, if you have any magic trick, please tell me :D !

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Ha! If I did, I'd already be living on my own island somewhere and you never would have heard of me. lol

Seriously though, like I said, define your absolute "worst day" on Hive and just do it. Even if its just making two upvotes. That's it. If you do at least that, even on the days you just can't summon up the effort to do anything else, you will STILL be making progress. And I can guarantee you this, once you do those two upvotes, 9 times out of 10 you'll end up doing more. If not, then you still hit your goal. But like I said, just putting the effort in to get online and upvote two things will help form the habit over time. And you'll actually feel good about the fact that you still made progress, even on your "worst" day. Keep at it.

Agreed, as I wrote almost a week ago, I started a journey of at least 20 LEO comments per day and I can already see some benefits so I will just stick to it and will see the results a month from now !

Grinding is the way to go up the ladder isn't it?

Cheers and I hope you reach your goals !

This hits home as I have really been trying to focus more. I found my self getting lazy this winter and watching show after show on whatever streaming service. Now that the weather is getting nice, I am trying to be more purposeful with my time. When I log on to read/comment/create I make sure I have music and spend my allotted time doing as much as I can, not aimlessly surfing.

When I set a new goal, I now try to frame most of my decisions as - Does this action get me closer to my goal... if no - then stop. ( Usually need to put down the junk food and turn off the entertainment)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Lol Yes, junk food and entertainment do go together rather well. Sounds like you're on the right track. Something that helps me when I get distracted by television is thinking about how LONG it takes to watch something. Even with no commercials and fast forward. I mean, in 45 minutes here I could write read 10 things, write 10 comments, and upvote 10 posts. That is Leo/Hive/CTP/etc I'm missing out on because I'm mindlessly helping someone else get paid. Don't get me wrong. I DO watch some television. But it's usually AFTER I've done my thing here. Almost like a reward. lol

Does this action get me closer to my goal

That is a great question to ask. Like I said, it sounds like you're on the right track. Keep after it.

Thanks for this wonderful post @dagger212. I had this habit of checking the wallet of folks as soon as their name comes in front of me. I don't do that anymore because it distracts you and wastes your time. Instead I focused on pushing out my own content or at least comment everyday. It's been rewarding so far and I am sure in 6 months from now I will be in a.much better place.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Nice! Thanks for the reply. It sounds like you're headed in the right direction. It is amazing how easy it is to get distracted. Just keep commenting and posting. By doing that, you'll soon get an idea of what to write for your own post. That's where this one came from. I was posting a comment on Leo Talk and by the time I got to the end of it, I realized I should make it a post. (one of the benefits of writing such long comments...lol )

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Hahaha. That is so cool. It happened with me once. While writing a comment I realised that it deserves to be a full fledged post. 😁

MJ is a punk. Sure he had a lot of talent, but you watch that documentary that they recently had on him you soon start to realize that he is kind of douche. I have very little respect for the guy. I know that isn't what this post is about, but since you brought it up :)

Yes, most of these ultra-competitive people are not the nicest people in real life. One of the hazards of being so focused on your own goals is that you tend to trample on some of the people around you to get there. I'm not excusing it by any means but...it is what it is. He's always been nice to me. Except on the golf course.

Just kidding. He's nice there too.

Did I get you yet? lol I've never met him. lol

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Haha, you had me for a second! You never know. You might know him. I know the guy who used to coach wrestling at Minnesota.

I definitely want my account to be over 1k LEO by the time my account is 1 year old and I am definitely making good progress toward that goal. And engagement is definitely the number one thing helping me get there. I plan to make sure to show up everyday and make goals based on my own performance. This way the bags I fill today will be something I can use to save those 8 hours in the future.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yes, you've got the commenting and engaging part down. lol Now you just need to up your game a little on your own posts. The first time onealfa smacks down a Toruk vote on you you'll never be the same. lol I just gave you an idea of how to do that on your post about your March numbers and April goals. Keep it up. Enough people know you now that you should be able to get a decent response on your own material. Thanks for the reply!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I did get a vote from onealfa once for a HPUD but I generally don't make many posts on LeoFinance. But I plan to start improving on that from this month forward. Maybe a post or two every week or so to start. Then slowly increase it.

One of my goals is to achieve financial independence through Hive and I've set a few milestones for the next few years:

  1. Earn enough to cover my expenses
  2. Earn the same I make from my "day job"
  3. Earn what I believe I would be making from my day job 8 years from now, considering my expected career progression

When I hit number 3, is the time I'll consider quitting my job and do Hive full time

For the moment, I'm thinking about Hive as a 2nd job so I'm trying to spend at least 4 hours on it every day. I must say it's being hard and your post gave me an idea.

Maybe 4 hours is too much to start with so maybe if I commit to 1 hour of focused work every day, things will be much easier and I'll see some better results.

Yes, try not to make it "work", right? You want to be able to enjoy it. Engaging can be fun but if you put too much pressure on yourself to do certain things, you can burn yourself out. Have a goal in mind each time you log on but give yourself permission to adjust on the fly. You definitely need to commit if you want to reach your goals, but, like I said, if you make it a task instead of something you want to do, you run the risk of falling prey to negative energy.

I look forward to getting on and seeing what's happening. I have my own goals but the main thing for me is to enjoy the process. I've got enough stress in my life without creating more for myself by "forcing" myself to do things. It's my account. These are my plans. These are my goals. I'm committed to reaching them but I'm not going to kill myself doing it. The whole point is for this to be my "job" without it feeling like work.

Maybe 4 hours is too much to start with so maybe if I commit to 1 hour of focused work every day, things will be much easier and I'll see some better results.

I don't know if I'd actually commit to a certain amount of time as much as I might commit to a certain amount of actions. Like I said, my primary goal is to always keep my voting bar off of 100%. I can basically do about 20-30 50% upvotes to bring it down to a level where it won't recharge to 100% while I'm working or sleeping. Sometimes I'll do more votes. Sometimes less. But for me, almost 100% of my votes come with a comment so..I'm giving value and receiving value and sometimes receiving more value for my comments as well. In this way, I'm always getting Leo and Hive rewards into my account every single day. THAT'S my real goal. Always keep the needle moving in the right direction.

Sorry for the long-winded response. I can't seem to write short comments. lol

Sorry for the long-winded response. I can't seem to write short comments. lol

No need to apologize! On the contrary, I really appreciate your thoughtful response!

I guess I could use a shift of mindset. Because of my job, I've been conditioned to operate on high performance, and hence I have the need to time everything and always be looking for ways to optimize.

It would probably help me if I didn't look at Hive as another job or a chore.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Well those aren't bad qualities at all. I'm just saying, allow yourself to breathe and enjoy the process rather than forcing it. Don't worry about spending every minute optimizing performance. Have fun. The journey should be part of the reward. Not just the results. I mean, if you're driven and you love operating that way, go for it. Just make sure you are smelling the roses here and there along the way.
