Doing some stuff on EVMOS

in LeoFinance2 years ago

Today, I freed up a few dollars, to try some things out on EVMOS. I have been keen to give some stuff a go on EVMOS, and was particularly interested in the Orbital Apes NFT mint. Here is some of the stuff I did today:

  • Used a bridge for the first time, to bridge funds from Polygon to Evmos.

  • Registered a .evmos domain name.

  • Minted some NFT's

Read on to see all the details, and how it all went.

Trying Out Evmos.png

So, the first thing I did was to move some funds into my EVMOS Metamask wallet. Do to complexities with the airdrop, I have had to make a new Brave profile with a separate Metamask wallet completely from my main wallet address. This was so I could import the remainder of my airdrop, which had mostly been claimed via Keplr. Anyway, it is what it is, so now I have multiple brave profiles for multiple Metamask instances.

The funds I wanted to shift were on Polygon. So first I moved a little MATIC, plus around $200 of USDC into my new Polygon address. Then I checked on Diffusion Finance to see the available bridges. I settled on Connext as it was the first one I came to that had Polygon to Evmos capabilities.

I found the process relatively straight forward. It took a little while, and I went to do some other things for a bit. When I came back, I had to perform another wallet function to claim the tokens I had bridged. Anyway, it worked, and was ok speed wise I guess. When you are used to Hive, and Cosmos chains were transactions take seconds, 15 minutes seems a while. But I guess for EVM to EVM bridge TX's it is not too bad.

The last step here, once the USDC was in my EVMOS wallet, was to trade it, using Diffusion, to EVMOS. Very straightforward process for anyone that has used an EVM Dex before.

Orbital Apes.

The main reason I wanted to shift some funds, was to mint a couple of Orbital Apes NFT's. The Orbital Apes project, which is built on EVMOS, has just opened its public mint for its flagship Apr's collection. You can find the mint page here with each mint costing 60 EVMOS (around $85 at the time of publication).

Owning an Orbital Ape comes with a range of perks, which make it more of an income producing asset than just a (hopefully) cool looking NFT. I say "hopefully" because once minted, you still can't see the Ape's yet. I believe they will be revealed at a future point in time. Anyway, there are 10K available, and it is currently just under 50% minted.

OA perks.png

So already, after just a couple of hours at most, I can can 0.521 EVMOS. The Orbital Apes project has set up an Validator, and shares 50% of its validator rewards with Ape owners. In addition, 20% of the transaction fees from the Orbit Platform (the NFT marketplace) are redistributed to Orbital Apes owners. So owning one of these Apes is in effect owning a revenue share of the platform, and the validator, for as long as you own the Ape. That is what attracted me to want to be involved.

Anyway, you can stooge around the marketplace for yourself and see what it looks like in its very early days. The Orbital Apes website is where you can go to mint, and learn more about the overall project.

EVMOS Domain names.

Having finished playing around with Orbital Apes for now, I move on to take a look at the Evmos Domains service. This is a very simple service it seems, offering .EVMOS addresses (like you see the .ETH people all have).

So I connect my wallet here, and search for jk6276.evmos. Success, it is available. The site moves to a page that really really needs dark mode, but nonetheless I push on. After a false start where things didn't work, I went back to the start and tried again. This time I succeed in getting to the register page.

register evmos domain.png

So, I decide to up the time period, and select 5 years registration. I progress through the 3 step process. Once all that completes, which only takes a few minutes, I then set the jk6276.evmos as my primary Evmos Domain Name. What that does, I am not too sure for now. I decide to leave it at that, and not mint any other domains for now.

I pop back to the Orbital Apes marketplace, and after a short time, the account shows as my jk6276.evmos instead of the plain old wallet address oxblahblahblah address. Nice.

You can see my Orbitmarket.io profile here, but here is what it looks like:

Like I said, the reveal for the two apes will be at some point in the future (not sure, but I've seen it discussed somewhere on Twitter).

Conclusion.

Overall, I have enjoyed playing around with some of these dApps today. I was keen to get a couple of Orbital Apes, and surprised a bit that they are not minting faster. Possibly launching while the important Osmosis dex is unavailable has slowed their mint rate. In any case, I'm happy to have two, can't wait to see how rare they are, and looking forward to seeing the rewards over time from owning them.

The EVMOS name service was ok. Cheap enough, and aside from a poor visual in my experience on the page, it worked fine.

EVMOS overall worked really nicely for me today, and I am looking forward to playing with some more stuff in the coming weeks.

Thanks for reading,

JK.

These domain names kinda seem like people pay money to get what we already have on hive

That is exactly how it felt when I did it. Buying something I got for free on Hive. But I had a few EVMOS left over, and figured I'd give it a go.

Interesting insights @jk6276. You are more adventurous than me, as I do not understand the point of these NFTs enough to invest in them. I hope it works out well for you!

I have thought about the whole domain naming service on ETH. I haven't been able to see enough value in it yet, nor reach any clarity on what name I would use if it did, to "pull the trigger."

Very interesting, though, to see EVMOS has already put that feature into service. I hope it is an indication of how well thought out EVMOS is and an indication of it future prospects for success!

Soon after collecting my airdrop, I got into Diffusion. I even briefly debated about writing another post about it along with my own experience entering into EVMOS.

Then, the price started crashing ...

I am currently sitting on the sidelines now, in USDC. While suffering a loss, it isn't anywhere near as big as it would have been, had I HODLed ...

We'll see from here ...

The NFT's I look at like buying a lottery ticket. I put some funds in to cheap options, and consider those funds lost. Then, if one turns out to be valuable, it's like a little win. Definitely have not gone full NFT degen, still don't really see the use of them, but I'll play the game anyway.

That reminds me, have you seen that the last portion of the STARS airdrop is available now. To claim it you have to buy an NFT on the marketplace. For me, I just looked for the cheapest one, bought it and then listed it for sale again. Cost a small amount, but got the airdrop finished.

Surprised the EVMOS price has not crashed further to be honest. Staking rewards are still crazy high. High staking returns in a bear market spells trouble for the price, I think, regardless of how good the product is. We have seen almost every Cosmos asset drop massively over the last few months. Not expecting that to change any time soon, personally.

Very good. I hope the NFTs provide the income boost for which you are hoping.

"That reminds me, have you seen that the last portion of the STARS airdrop is available now."

Yes, I did. Thank you for asking. I am cashing my STARS position in OSMOSIS. Still debating about whether to keep a little bit staked. Like you, I need to put the two NFTs I own up for sale. They mean literally nothing to me ...

"Staking rewards are still crazy high."

Yep, I am compounding them daily. I now have 25% more staked than I did originally. By doing that, so far I have maintained a pretty consistent claim amount, as the APR drops ... Not sure how long I will keep that up though.

I created an LP position on Osmosis, then sold ~$150 worth of them into USDC, when the price dropped below $2.70. I will likely do that from now on, with any future airdrop. At least then I can have a little something to show for them.

Do you see any IBC-based airdrops looming which have you a little bit excited?

SmartBCH also has a similar domain name service. I spend quite a time to try come up with a good but no, all the best ones were taken.

More and more of the chains I see are popping up with them. Funny, Hive has had them, for free, as the default rather than the exception for years. It felt silly paying for something we get for free here, but it is what it is.

Hive has many things that should be default
