How has Crypto and Blockchain impacted my personal finances.

in LeoFinance3 years ago

For many years of my life, I knew I was looking for something, but I just didn't know what. I always felt that there was a better way, a way out of being financially captured and trapped in the system. For years, living week to week, pay to pay with no end in sight. My path into crypto was probably pretty similar to many, but it begins with two major learning experiences.

Hopefully, crypto is the light at the end of the tunnel - Image from Pixabay

Ancient History. (REKT for the first time)

My first "REKT" experience was the "dot com bubble" going back 20ish years. I came into this time in my early 20's, and thought I was the hottest trader on the block. In reality, I didn't have a clue about anything - trading skills, technical analysis, fundamental analysis, risk management and so on. I realised as tech stock prices were booming that I could buy a much bigger position than I had the funds for, so long as I sold it prior to settlement 3 or 4 days later. Off I went, speculating like crazy up to the crash. Within days I had turned a portfolio of stocks worth around $20K that I had saved for years to accumulate (yes in my late teens, early 20's) into nothing - with a $15K personal loan used to square the ledger with the stock brokers. Rekt hard.

In hindsight, I can now recognise that those days were pure gambling, and problem gambling at that. I learned my first really harsh financial lesson at that time - don't speculate with other people's money. I withdrew completely from stocks for a while, and knuckled back down in the shitty job to pay of the debts and get back to square.

Insert more years than I care to remember of boring drudgery.

Second Chances. (REKT again)

My second big adventure came along after finally making some changes in my life. I quit my shitty job, and went travelling. Three month around Asia, and seeing some of the world. When I returned, I went back to work in a different job, managing a cafe for a hands-off owner. He was in difficulties, having bought the business for his wife to run. A few months later she left, and he owned this cafe and didn't know what to do with it. After a while, he offered to sell it to me for what I thought was a bargain price. I came up with a business plan, and borrowed most of the funds from my parents to buy it.

Over the next 12 months, I slowly built up the business, having some success, but also making lots of mistakes. It was bought as a loss making venture with lots of potential, but I didn't have the funds to invest in it and slowly fell behind on bills - most notably building up a big debt to the franchisor. The franchise model was such a poor setup, very one sided in their favour, and it was a constant battle to get to break-even.

During this 18 month period, I also started a relationship with the love of my life, and we started our own family. This shifted my cost base quite a bit, and I was drawing more funds out of the business than it could afford. Then came along two events that put a particularly harsh full stop on our progress, and set me back once again to where I was 10 years earlier, but this time with a family and commitments.

The lease on the shop was due for renewal. It was located in a shopping center, which required businesses to renovate their store in order to secure a new lease. I had no other assets to secure a loan to achieve this, and the Global Financial crisis (GFC) kicked in. Banks tightened their lending criteria here in Australia massively, and a marginal business with no other assets asking for a 100K loan was something they just basically laughed at and showed the door. Eventually, the franchise company took back possession of the store and showed me the door.

REKT again. Massive debts, basically having lost a portion of my parents retirement funds - pretty much written out of their will as a result, a 6 month old baby and a 12 year old stepdaughter, no job and no income... Shit!!!!!

Rebuild again.

My partner and I moved out of town, leaving Sydney behind and moving 500 kilometers north to a smallish coastal city, living with her parents. I get a job at a major supermarket and we start our life over again. Stubbornly, I refuse to declare bankruptcy, and slowly work on clearing some of the debts away. Insert a number of years of drudgery once again as we grind away, week to week, and re-establish our new life.

I spent much of this time looking for an extra income, with little success. I was looking for a way out, and eventually Bitcoin started making the news. This instantly fascinated me, and I watched daily as it boomed up to its last ATH around $20K USD. The bubble started to pop, and I couldn't help recognizing the similarity to the tech wreck previously. Still, the more I read, and started to look into it, the more I realized this could be a way out for me. I still had no money to invest, and was very gun-shy about trading again, but started looking for ways to generate an income in crypto.

Mining.

I discovered a mining site called Minergate around march 2018. This was it. I could run my computer, and earn this magical internet money. Obviously at this point BTC was dead for home mining, but ETH and XMR were the opportunity. Prices kept dropping, but I started mining and learning. Planning on building a multi-GPU rig, and never having the money to do so, I chipped away, played with faucets and ground out a tiny amount of crypto, which continued to lose value. At that time, I also found out about STEEM, thanks to @donald.porter who was also active on the mining site at the time.

Came for the money.

My experience with steem was similar to many I guess. Having missed the halcyon days of STEEM running up to its ATH, I started grinding away, writing crappy blog posts that no one was reading, and looking for a way to make a few dollars. Eventually, persistence started to pay off, and I kept learning new things and slowly building my account. Communities and Tribes arrived, and there was now a bunch more ways to grind out tokens and find ways to get ahead. The early days of Sportstalk were kind to me, and I put alot of funds I gathered there into a little project called Spinvest, which has proved to have been a much better investment. The other project that became the first place on steem - and subsequently hive - where I really felt at home and among like minded people was here on LeoFinance.

Hope.

I think all this history has shaped my approach to crypto. I have had a few small dabbles at trading, but as I learned previously it isn't my thing. The biggest impact that crypto has had on my life so far has not been financial. It has been to improve my state of mind, increase my confidence in my future and give me hope that better days are coming. I have taken some funds out, once to treat the wife and I to a once in a lifetime chance at some awesome front row concert seats. This proved in my head that this money could be real, and also showed my ever doubtful missus that all that time sitting at the computer may not be wasted after all. In the last month I have taken a bit out also, for fiat, to catch up a couple bills and take a bit of real world financial pressure off. Nowadays, when the wife and I contemplate what life would be like without financial stress, she no longer thinks all this is a waste of time. When she tells me she hates her job, and wants to win lotto so we can quit, my answer is that I'm working on it. Her response used to be that I am "wasting my time", now it has changed to "work on it faster".

So the short answer to the question is that crypto has thus far had a small impact on my personal finances. I've put a few dollars in here and there, and taken a bit out on a couple of occasions. The real impact I think has been on my mental health - giving hope that things will get better. This has made my work life more bearable, and has generally washed away alot of negative thoughts, borderline depression stemming from the business failure, and overall a more positive outlook on life.

You can't really put a price tag on all the non-tangible benefits from building and growing in this space. Financial freedom will be nice, when it comes, but the peace of mind knowing that it will happen is almost more valuable - I think.

Let's hope third times a charm, and this turns out to have been what I have spent my life looking for. Time will tell.

Thanks for reading,

JK.

good read, thanks

Thanks mate, third times a charm.

Hey man, great read!
Two times rekt ... that hurts.
This bull run, give it a year or two more, will be the one :)
I know that you are in other projects as well, outside the Hive ecosystem, hope those serve you well to.

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it.

Sometimes the harshest lessons in life are the most valuable ones. I'm more confident than ever nowadays, and more determined to make sure LEO and RUNE will be my "life-changing" investments.

That's the best thing here with LEO, we all have a direct chance to influence how our investment performs via our involvement and activity and engagement.

Pretty unique opportunity, really.

I appreciate you taking the time to read my story.

I feel you!!! This is what I can say, that I feel you! Also that you've realized that trading is not for you. I think for 99,99% of the humans, day trading in crypto is not a mean of getting an income. It can go well for a couple of months, but in the end, some tiny little robot will have the edge.

Staying sane with those life lemons, is something respectable. Also a good factor is that you know the priorities in your life and from what is to read, must be your family. This is solid gold.

As a tip, take it slowly, do the math deep enough and build up stone by stone, which you must be doing well in here. Thanks for sharing.

I think there will be something relatable for many here. I feel many are in crypto looking for a way out, a second (or third or more) chance at getting ahead.

My approach is a lot more cautious these days, but once I am confident that I'm on the right path, it's full steam ahead.

Family is what it's all about, just trying to find a way to give them a better life, and get us out of the rat race.

Thanks for reading my story.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Just a personal note, I think you are doing great for your family. I'm having a 2 year old one that is sleeping at the moment but it's spreading upvotes here and there. I'm building his account for him (victor-alexander) so that when he is mature enough to understand some basic economics and human interactions, will have a stocked up account with some good gimmicks on it. It might be worthless till then, which I doubt.

Thanks again for sharing!

I set accounts for my kids too. I gave them all 50 HIVE delegations and had them follow me on curation trails.

It is trickle income at best, but they have the luxury of time.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Very wise thing to do! Your kids will be thankful for that when they will get it and understand it.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Wow, sounds like that's been a steep learning curve from a young age!

Getting smashed like that twice is harsh, and roping your parents in too, that can't have been easy, but that second time really wasn't your fault!

Sounds like you found Steem at the right time - nice description of it!

You've just reminded me that SPI needs a rebrand!

I think Leo is getting there with how to make crypto-blogging work, and showing everyone else how much work IS REALLY involved, not to mention all the stabilisation work on Hive that we're riding on for free!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

We all get our life lessons at some stage. I lost a fair bit of sleep at the time worrying about the parents money, but they were actually really good about it. Didn't cause any dramas, just means I have already had my inheritance early in their eyes.

I think LEO is on the right path, it's definitely got the best set up and prospects of anything on HIVE. I haven't explored monetized social/blogging beyond HIVE, pretty happy here.

Thanks for the comment mate, appreciate it.

I enjoyed a lot this post, and I feel pretty identified with the fact of getting REKT multiple times. Also happened to me, truth is that happens to everyone.

You don't need me to tell you this, but anyway, 'keep going' is always the response.

I'm also feeling happy and proud of feeling in LeoFinance like a big decentralized family. We might not know all our faces and life-facts, but we're here, pursuing similar goals and without any aim of surrending.

Great job! :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I think the LEO community is pretty battle hardened, probably why it is becoming such a success. Almost everyone on here will have their own "REKT" stories, but the mark of success is how you respond to them.

It sure does feel like a tight core group here heading in the same direction.

Thanks for sharing your story. I think a lot of crypto investors are in similar positions even though there is all this hype around potential growth. The reality is most of the gains were already created prior to the 2018 crypto price peak. Anyone who has since hlod likely trying to breakeven or barely any gain. Hope you can continue your journey in crypto space with big rewards down the line.

I reckon most of us are in this space for pretty similar goals, with many different paths along the way. I missed the big boom, but there are plenty of ways to build income streams for the long term.

I really do think the third time will be the charm for you. Very insightful post about your life mate. I couldn't stop reading.

What I admire about your charter is that you weren't afraid to try, that is what success stories are made of, failing your way to success.

Take is easy man, good look in "the season".

Definitely don't regret having a go. Life is full of lessons we learn along the way, but you don't gain that experience with trying things. Glad you enjoyed the post mate, I enjoyed writing it and looking back on the path that brought me here.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

My brain is filled with a lot of random thoughts now a days (could be because of age factor and/or some other factors/issues, I am dealing with for quite some time now), and normally find myself unable to read any post in a flow, but let me admit, this post was so interesting and inspiring (in a way) that I finished it in a go and didn't even think about the break. Congratulations on this wonderful writing and heartfelt life story.

I like the most of turning of the response from "wasting my time" to "work on it faster", I think, you're already on the winning side. We all, people (small fish) involved in the crypto world, hope that we'll get financial stability and reasonable living from our crypto assets and efforts we are putting here, and that's not impossible, signs are telling that this has to happen sooner or later.

My well wishes for your fastest progress.

Really glad you enjoyed my writing style. Slowly winning my wife over has been encouraging lately. Being able to pull money out on a couple of occasions recently has helped. I believe now, more than ever, that grinding away and building wherever possible in crypto-land will pay off over time.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Nice post. Different individual stories but a common and shared learning on crypto. It is fascinating to read these posts and to realize the paths people treaded before coming to Hive/Crypto. I thought I was the only one but it seems i can find similarities in differences. Good luck with everything. Third time is always a charm.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I think all of will have challenges and setbacks that have led us into this space looking for another chance at getting ahead. For all it's flaws, there is still so much opportunity here on HIVE, it really is an awesome base to grow out into the wider crypto landscape.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

That's very true, specially for me. Hive has been instrumental for me to know and understand more about crypto. I has also sensitized me into may nuances of crypto e.g. uniswap and defi

Well that is another story you tell here, I respect how you worked yourself up every time ... and still managed to keep the confidence. And it's sure very relatable as I'm looking for a way out of my financial struggles too ...

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It took a while to get the confidence back after the second "rekt" moment. The recovery from that took many years, and I still doubt my judgement more than I should at times. Part of the benefit of being here is reading other's stories and realising so many of us are in the same situation, looking for a way to overcome financial struggles.

I wish you great success in putting your own difficulties behind you.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Your story is quite inspiring man! I could feel your desire to fight to get ahead. It's comforting that despite everything you have gained that experience and now you have a good approach. Thank you for sharing!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks mate, life throws plenty of challenges and roadblocks at us at times. These experiences shape and mold our approach. The key is to get back up, and look forward, not wallow and get bitter about all the bad times.

I really appreciate your comment.

Minergate is how I got into mining too. 1st I tried Cloud mining with https://www.genesis-mining.com and mined some Dash mostly. I've also mined ByteBall (Now OByte) by contributing to World Community Grid.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I had no idea what I was doing, really, and as the prices continued to drop in the bear market, finally I woke up to the fact I was paying more in electricity, and wrecking my computer, than what I was making mining. The WCG thing was good for a while, I did that too after I switched of Minergate.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

That's one hell of a story! Wishing you all the best with your third chance! Together we can make it work!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Together we can make it work!

I think that is the beauty of LEO - we all get to directly influence the returns we get on investing here through our activity and involvement. Pretty unique opportunity, really.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Nice to hear your backstory JK, and that the good lady is now on board with crypto lol. Getting rekt twice is tough, especially when you take the option to pay debts off yourself rather than go bankrupt! But third time lucky eh....and we're all getting set for something special over the next little period.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I was pretty stressed out after that second one, it really battered the confidence a bit. Declaring bankruptcy would have been (in my head anyway) the ultimate sign of failure. I wasn't ready to concede defeat.

Third time's a charm - we will find out eventually, but I hope so.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Wow that is one hell of a story and you have some experiences that will last a lifetime of that I am sure, rekt, in stocks and business, you really have some level of resilience. I hope that crypto will be the winning one for you

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Definitely experience is a great teacher. I getting more and more confident that crypto is the winning ticket for me, but we shall see. Your comment about resilience is important, I've found in life that half the battle is to just keep showing up

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Stubbornly, I refuse to declare bankruptcy, and slowly work on clearing some of the debts away. Insert a number of years of drudgery once again as we grind away, week to week, and re-establish our new life.

Truly inspiring story John.

Thank you for sharing

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I was feeling a fair bit of guilt, and failure at the time, and trying to keep myself from slipping into depression. Declaring bankruptcy would probably have been a faster way out of the mess but in my head it would have been the ultimate mark of failure.

For my own peace of mind, I didn't want to admit defeat like that, so battled on.

I really appreciate you reading and sharing my story.

Life is a journey with ups and downs. Just gotta a learn to enjoy the ride.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I have it on good authority that "cryptocurrency" is just a deep state conspiracy to make President Trump look bad.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Haha, could be...

But what was it before President Trump? It's been around longer than his presidency.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It's inspiring to read your story. Blockchain is the future, sometimes we hear that what we have been working does not worth it since they do not see instant money pulling out of the system. But we know that we are building slowly and it has a huge impact on our life.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

You second chance after travelling from Asia I think was a good learning from your life. yes sometimes we think about our family is a burden but if we can run our business Comfortably then it's a good sign for us. you love your family your coffee shop business and obviously I don't like the franchise system which is pressure rather it's good to do something better from own initiative and marketing. whatever I loved to read your journey post very much. thanks for sharing and finally mining comes to you as the solution. thank you very much

The post is like series of events...
I am sorry to know the losses from trading...
I am happy that you are a part of Hive and yes the hope is waht making us to put the things forward...
When I start posting mh wife was like what are you doing.. wasting yiyr time.. and now when I told her that my account worth so much, she is like buy gold for me...lol

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

A veces nos cuesta pero si sabemos soportar y ser perseverantes alcanseremos la cima, gracias por compartir.

You have a lot of courage posting your business failures publicly. Great job remaining confident in the face of your wife questioning you about your crypto journey. Keep your head down, keep grinding, try to stay positive, and you will be a millionaire in no time. Life is really long, and you are young.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It [cryptocurrency and blockchain] has been to improve my state of mind, increase my confidence in my future and give me hope that better days are coming.

Better Days are Coming!

I hear you brother! That is why I am still holding my HIVE bag. This is not a sprint but a marathon.

Better days are coming! I am sure of it.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Reading your story inspired me. I'm 29 and living off of government assistance thanks to health defects I was born with making regular work a living hell and almost impossible. I learned about DeFi and crypto a couple years ago and tried investing then but somehow ended up losing it all. I was stupid and too jumpy. Learning about HIVE and the platforms built on it has been a massive boost to my own self-esteem, as I feel I might actually be able to work towards financial freedom this time. It's been a long time, but I hope soon I can start climbing back up the hill I fell down years ago to the poverty level.

Thank you for posting this, as it was exactly what I needed today.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Third time is a charm.

Happy to see someone who started around the same time as me be able to grow like you have. Great job and congratulations.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I'm glad you finally in the path of fulfilling the financial freedom you were looking for years. In my case, like many others, a large percentage of my financial income comes from crypto and blockchain, and this has definitely had a positive impact on my finances and I have achieved some economic independence that I did not have when I was only dedicated to exercising my profession receiving an insufficient salary.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Very solid read. It was quite inspiring that after series of downtimes, you still found the hope and courage to move ahead. The pain sustained in moving forward has began to pay, that I know. Bravo!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

What a great story hetmano! Blockchsin was definitely your destiny. I was also looking for something special and over time I understood that this platform was what I always needed. Cheers!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I can really sympathise with a business going under, I had a similar experience myself and a ten year debt to pay off. I'm really glad you're feeling more hopeful about the future and that you've got support from your wife - much better place to be 🙂

Crypto is the ultimate "Plan B" I think for many of us. The real world has been more bearable since I've got this ticking over and looking like it may become the path out of the rat race. Time will tell, but I think we all may have found the right place to escape.

We still do buy a lottery ticket every now and then, but like you say, the odds here are much better.

Glad you enjoyed my post.
