Napster is getting the blockchain treatment...

Not too long ago, I wrote about LimeWire rising from the dead as an NFT marketplace. That really took me down memory lane as you can tell from reading the article. I have a weak spot for nostalgia,, and that was a swift kick to the nostalgia nerve. A couple days ago, I came across an article with a headline something like "Algorand Buys Napster" and I immediately bookmarked it since I didn't have time to read it at that moment.

After forgetting about it and then being reminded when I got into a conversation with someone about file sharing. I had to go back and see what the deal was here. Why would anyone at all buy Napster, a dead music streaming platform...? Much less Algorand?! Like really? I could see maybe Spotfiy or some other music company buying them just because... But I really didn't see this one coming.

Algorand, the company behind the blockchain, partnered with Hivemind to purchase Napster Digital. Hivemind just happens to be involved with the relaunch of LimeWire as an NFT marketplace.

My first thought was obviously just... "Why?", but then it hit me. Napster is the perfect highly nostalgic music streaming platform to support NFTs. The trend with old companies like Napster, RadioShack, LimeWire, and even BlockBuster is to turn into a blockchain-focused company. The reasoning behind it is simple. People want to be reminded of old things. Simpler times.

If people are able to use a nostalgic platform from their childhood and accomplish something totally new, they probably will. Hell, RadioShack DeFi could have been cool but Tai Lopez owns it and I don't trust anything that guy says. I honestly cannot wait to test out the LimeWire NFT platform literally just for the walk down memory lane. I hope the UI really captures the old school LimeWire look.

My hopes are the same for whatever is done with Napster. It needs to capture the old school file sharing look from back in the day if it wants to attract the right audience. I don't think young people will even know what to think of it lol.

The bad part is, they didn't really say what they're going to do with Napster. I assume they will integrate music NFTs or even all NFTs in the form of a way for artists to sell them. Spotify is exploring a way for artists to display their NFT collections as well, so I'm sure it will be something similar, but on the Algorand blockchain.

I don't know a ton about Algorand, but my brother is a big fan. It's self-proclaimed as "the world's most decentralized, scalable, and secure blockchain infrastructure." Might as well say "Ethereum Killer" right on the front page lol. Anyway - it's a fast, cheap, and secure blockchain that is designed for high-performance dapps. This would be a perfect solution for music NFTs since you're not gunna be spending a bunch of fees to trade your collectible tracks.

I know this all sounds a little out there, but we're headed for a very weird future because of technology. You might as well just embrace it and try to help innovate with it. I can't wait to hear how they're going to blockchainify the platform for the future.
