Let's work on our post tagging.

in LeoFinance2 years ago

If you watched the weekly "Wen Soon" show, AKA the weekly Leofinance AMA, you would know that the community pages feature for Leofinance is coming soon.

Today, I want to talk about a small detail that will be really important for us to make the most of this new feature.

image.png

Post Tags.

The tag's are going to be crucial for the community pages. For goodness sake, if you write a post about something, make sure it is one of the tags. For example, a post about Thorchain will only appear on the Thorchain community page if it is tagged as a Thorchain post.

Posting about Thorchain, and having all your tags as "LEO, HIVE, proofofbrain, vyb, cent, bht, neoxian, pal, archon, whatevertribe" means your post is not adding value for Leofinance. Using 10 tribe tags, and nothing related to the content in the post is a waste. Yes you might earn a couple of tokens worth $0.00001 each, but that content is not categorized properly, It's probably bad for SEO (I guess) and soon it will not appear in the community page.

The first 5 tags should be content related.

Lets look at a few recent examples:

tags forexbrokr.png

Perfect. The first 5 tags all relate to the content of the post. Then you can put tribe tags or whatever after, where it does not matter as much.

tags finguru.png

Again, that is really good. For those new to Leofinance, the first tag you see is the community tag for Leofinance and can't be changed or removed if you post from Leofinance.io. But then the next four tags are content specific. Would this post have brought thousands of visits to Leo if it was not tagged like this? Maybe, maybe not.

Now for a few examples of what I'm talking about.

stepn tags.png

These were the tags for a post about Stepn. Now, if we have a Solana community page soon, or a Stepn page, or a "Move2earn" page, this post (which I have not identified as this is not about criticizing anyone) will not appear in those community pages.

cake tags.png

Here is another. Can you tell what that post is about? It's about Cake, on BSC. So when community pages go live, this post won't appear on the "Cake" page, or the Binancesmartchain (or BSC) page at all. Now, everything else about this post was great. It earned decent rewards, had plenty of interaction even though it was an outward facing post. Decent SEO on it also.

This post is simply a shout out to the community to put a little thought into the tags you use. Maximizing tribe income is nice, but you may miss a lot of LEO by not tagging for the content. If a big curator goes looking through the Thorchain community page, because that is their favorite crypto, and your post is not there to be seen because you want a tiny fraction of a tribe token for a tribe that is practically worthless these days, what impact could that have on your post earnings.

The other shout out is to use the #Leoalpha. Not on everything. But on posts you make about hidden gems, up and coming projects, or "the next big thing". @khaleelkazi mentioned in the Wen Soon show that a LeoAlpha community page is likely. If you want to be seen on that page, add the tag. Not as one of the first tags, but down the list. It will also help me find your post to curate it.

For those that don't know, @leoalpha is a project headed by @jk6276, looking to curate external focused content and looking for Alpha that the Leofinance community can profit from. We want to hear about small-caps, new launches, "the next thing" market trends, so we can highlight these things and help our community find the next 10X before it happens, not after.

We need more Alpha, and would love to see more posts about what's coming. As the team in the @leofinance AMA said, the top 10 in a few years in the next bull market will probably be very different to the top 10 now. The stars of the last cycle have done nothing this cycle, most have gone backwards. We are looking for the projects on the move to be the stars of the next cycle. What's going to hit big in 2023/4. Not an easy task, but we have a great big community of crypto fanatics to dig out some gems.

TLDR: Make sure your first few tags are relevant to the content please.

Thanks for reading, keep an eye out for Alpha by following @leoalpha here on Hive, or here on Twitter.

Cheers,

JK.

Yep, the 5/5 rule for tagging is a good one.

  1. First 5 tags = topics
  2. Second 5 tags = communities

While on the surface it seems the community tags just allow authors to milk extra tokens, they do serve an important SEO purpose.

When you use them, that community front-end creates a version of your post with a canonical link pointing back to the native front-end you actually published from.

I've found that that using these tags helps Google to index the original faster and more efficiently.

Finally, as a LEO investor I would highly recommend curators with stake to only vote content published via leofinance.io.

I find it super interesting that communities still haven't realised the value of content and traffic yet.

Other communities are literally happy to pay you in their token to help drive long term value to LEO.

Crazy.

Once a share of front-end ad revenue is integrated into staked LEO, it will be interesting to see if this changes how other communities view content.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks to adding in these extra details. It's true that the canonical stuff really helps.

I think the value of the content we all create is not recognized across the broader Hive eco-system, and it stuns me that other front ends, tribes and communities have not really made any moves to monetize beyond the tokens. Can't wait till the revenue sharing is up and running.

Thanks for the input mate.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

...it stuns me that other front ends, tribes and communities have not really made any moves to monetize beyond the tokens.

Maybe they aren't aware of the impact their domain name has on SEO for their tribes or communities? We're aware of it here because we are reminded of it all the time, but elsewhere many people may not even know what SEO is.

If everyone could publish from leofinance.io, that would be sweet for us, but it would also be a disservice to everyone else. So the ideal thing is for everyone to post relevant content from the proper domain. For communities or tribes without their own domain, I'm not sure what they would do.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Alpha tip for alpha creators. Tags are quite important for search engines to understand what your content is about. So we need to use them wisely. :) Wish we had some other way to get those tokens without using their respective tags. I hate to use them because they look more like spam.

Community feature is going to be EPIC. Can't wait.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yeah, the tribe tags are a double edged sword. But if the first tags are relevant, then it should be all good.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Another thing I try to do is ensure that my tags are folded in with my titles and headings for even more SEO impact. If I'm writing about Real Estate, that's going to be in my title, headings and you'd best believe I'm using the "real-estate" tag as one of the first five! Gotta optimize your content!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Every little thing helps. I'm still learning a lot of this stuff, and in my head using the keywords that you are targeting as tags makes sense.

Lots we can all do.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks for sharing this, I have learnt alot and will make adjustment as necessary.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

No worries. Every little adjustment we can make will pay dividends down the track.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

What's the difference between using tags in the tag field by following the rule @forexbrokr suggested (5+5, which is more like 1+5+4 or 1+4+5) and following the 5+5 rule plus including tags inline as part of a post's body or in a comment?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It is a very interesting topic that you mention, and it is necessary for all content creators here at LeoFinance to know about it. I think that creating content with tags relevant to that content, and not for the purpose of earning pennies from thematic tribes that have nothing to do with the topic we talk about in our posts, is something that has to happen soon if we want that LeoFinance (and also communities and tribes), posses a greater added value in the future.

Said that, I also think that making the placement of appropriate tags mandatory for the post that we are creating will serve to make the content specialized and this will truly constitute progress for the entire platform.

Very good post. Thanks for the info; and greetings.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Hey, glad you found it useful.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Leo plan to monetize content via ad revenue, and then use it to boost the returns for staked LEO tokens, works in the long run.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thank you for this, another new thing to learn about today. Tags (proper tags that is) are indeed important in making one's post easier to find. One thing I do need to work on myself.

Noted about the leoalpha one :)

Cheers!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Always something new to learn. You are doing great, keep up the good work.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yes, many things to learn around here in Hive. Thank you so much :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Good points,

It seems natural to use the tag for content specificity, but that's a habit I learned on Steemit.

I remember that on Steemit tags were the way people found and rewarded your posts, because they could search by tag to find posts they were interested in reading.
Plus most of the content contests used tags to find your posts, so the old members know the importance of content tags.

Now that we are looking at SEO I agree these tags are important again.

And I had to laugh when you said tagging ten tribes for pennies, unfortunately it's true the tribe tokens are worth what they use to be worth.

Perhaps I will have a tag contest in the future just to encourage this specific tag usage pattern :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It seems to be something taken for granted, by those of us that have been around for a while. But it felt like a good time for a little reminder with the renewed push for SEO and external attention.

Every little bit helps.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks for sharing I believe this is helpful and informative

No worries, glad you got something out of it.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It so makes sense… to bad some people do not understand this. It is the way to be seen by the people you want to be seen. And found even later on.
Great information! As it is very important.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It's a small thing, no doubt, but just another thing that can help us all in the long run.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It is… but I don’t think it is small.
It’s one of the main things your posts should have.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thank you for the reminder. I have noted this.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Your welcome, glad it has helped.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Good points. I was discussing tags with a group of friends the other day and I advocated for that same way of doing things: the first 5 tags should be about the content and the rest can be tribe tags.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Nice. It is just another little habit we can make a part of our routine that will help down the track.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Appropriate tagging sure is an art form but it's common sense to use a tag about the topic of the post. I will admit though, to have been caught in the illusion of tagging for tribes that give a (sometimes miniscule) return.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Nothing wrong with the tribe tags, they do serve a purpose beyond the tokens you can earn. See the comment here by Forexbrokr for more details.

5 topic tags first, then 5 tribe tags after is a great guide to remember if you can.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks for the tip!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

This is an excellent guide. I can learn new things !

Posted using LeoFinance Mobile

Always new things to learn.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I'd almost like to see a selector for main and sub categories to add your post to instead of using # but that's just me. Perhaps in the future. Still the community aspect is going to be huge for getting people into reading content in which they enjoy which is one of the most critical parts to success. For example Facebook has groups of like minded people that chat in groups, Reddit has subreddits which are managed and used by like minded people and so on. It will be interesting to see how they are managed and grow.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

This is a great idea.

Even if the back-end remains the same, you can change the front-end to force people to tag their posts more effectively.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

The community pages will be a killer feature, I think, and I can't wait to see it rolled out.

The main and sub categories would be good, but I think the Hive chain works with the tagging system as is. I guess a UI change could adapt it somehow.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Ok. Thanks for this as I have been lost with the tags and this really helps.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Your content has been great latetly.

An easy solution is to use the 5/5 rule for tagging:

  1. First 5 tags = topics
  2. Second 5 tags = communities

PS. Don't forget to try and link back to your old, related posts.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

If we refer to any of the major cryptocurrencies, it's a good idea to use links to the Guides by @cryptoguides. For example, if we refer to SafeMoon 3 times, then 1 backlink in the post to the SAFEMOON Guide is good; likewise with whatever Guide had been published.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Nice content, tagging is something I am sure I still make mistakes on. But I think I understand it better now.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It's not the most important thing in the world, but a few tags relevant to the content may make a difference. It's just about the making it a habit.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Officially LeoFinance says to use 10 tags, but I've been able to squeeze in 11 or 12. The D.Buzz front end permits as many tags as the buzz itself has space to handle, yet posting a buzz using PeakD is limited by PeakD to 10 tags.

I think there should be no tag limit or at least a greater amount of tags allowed in order to account for the topic tags or SEO tags.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

If I post about random shit from every day life that's related to finance and crypto what tags should I use and what relevance will these "micro communities" make to such content?
I rarely post about crypto projects.

Posted using LeoFinance Mobile

You can't go wrong here using finance and crypto as @forexbrokr suggests. after that, tags relevant for your post (whatever those tags should be). After that, the token tags which have priority for you.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I'm using the same old tags that I got... I prefer using leofinance instead of finance.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

If you're stuck, just use super high level tags like finance and crypto.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

What Forexbrokr said.

Not something to stress to much, just an additional thing we can do. Definitely it is more relevant for specific content about a particular project or topic. But even a couple of high level general tags work for more personal random content.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

This is helpful, I've been trying to improve my SEO, and I try to write about relevant and high interest stories, but tagging and headers and back links are all still new to me! lol

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Your content game has definitely levelled up lately, keep up the great work

:)

Quick improvements:

whatsup tags.

  1. Include links to your related articles under relevant anchor text.

For example instead of just pasting the URL, put the link under a keyword like polygon onboarding LUNA projects.

  2. Move the proofofbrain tag to the very last tag you use.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm trying to implement the suggestions I see.

I appreciate you taking the time to give me additional feedback! I'll keep working on it. Good tips

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

A lot of us are learning as we go here, myself included. It's a balance to hit between all the structure of headers and tags and links and so on, and just writing an interesting and engaging post.

Always learning.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks a lot for sharing your lessons! Much appreciated.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks for this clarification and a more effective way to organize our posts but also the entire library on Leofinance.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

All good. The small effort to choose tags carefully helps with many things, including content discovery and SEO.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks for the heads up. It would be great if we could get a hive wide way to improve tagging. Until then, this is a good solution.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Improving the system is above my pay grade. Making the most of what we have currently is worth the effort.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

this amazing way to help us have more traffic on our post because we have not been using tag right, another tool add to my collection

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Every little bit helps. 5 topic tags first, then the tribe tags if you wish is a good guide.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Good points. Its time to keep things more organized and properly arranged.

That way its easy to find what you're looking for.

I will take note of those first five when posting next. Thanks for the info

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

All good. Content discovery has been a challenge ever since I've been on Hive, and hopefully the tags and the upcoming community pages feature will be a great evolution.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Good stuff.
Thanks for the reminder and spreading some SEO related stuff :)

Every little bit helps. Thanks mate.

If you watched the weekly "Wen Soon" show, AKA the weekly Leofinance AMA

I am pretty new to the LeoFinance community, when and where is this?

The tags I did not the first five should be content related, but I am guilty of not using tags correctly.

I did think there were a maximum of ten tags in total allowed, but I see from some of your examples there are more than 12, perhaps that is because the LeoFinance front end allows for more than 10?

I have noticed that tagging the tribe tokens is not worth much at all, and you are right, it is much better using to drive traffic to your post!

Thanks for this, I shall review my tagging now!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I just saw your comment after I typed one earlier. Officially, the LeoFinance front-end says to use 10 tags, but's possible to squeeze out 11 or 12 tags. Maybe tag size ia a factor here; I don't know.

Whatever front-end you use for whatever post you make, squeeze out as many tags as the front-end allows before it throws warnings at you, then see about a 50/50 split between topic tags and token tags. If you need to go heavy in one direction, go heavy with topic tags.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks for clearing up and giving us some good guidance with tags.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I recognize that I am part of those who use meaningless labels that do not add value.

Thank you very much for this valuable information, I will put it into practice from now on because if I can somehow add value, I will take advantage of it.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I was thinking the same and i found your post. I can see lots of users doing this and it's obviously bad for seo. Proper relevant tags are important as well as no more repetitive keywords makes your post neat and clean and better for seo.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

This is very much required for optimization of keywords for search engine capturing system.

Noted for due diligence. :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I just learned about the #leoalpha tag. I tried editing some previous posts I made about yield farming and new dexes on relatively new chains like Astar and Conflux, but I think that it didn't actually modify the tags. Not sure if that is possible or if I just did it wrong maybe

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

This is a nice issue to bring up. Most times, its the intention behind the tag that is the problem.

For example, #neoxian tag is very common in most posts as it is believed to attract votes from the Neoxian city curators, so as other tags, such as #ocd, #pob and more.

Most times we (I'm guilty) make posts to gain attraction within the chain that to achieve #SEO supremacy. There is always room for improvements though. With the focus on SEO and more outwarding facing contents, the need for content specific tags cannot be overemphasized.

Its is just a hard mix to achieve, for newer accounts like mine, we (or I) fear that risking the first few tags for the sake of SEO puts my content at risk of poor visibility on the chain (consequently less votes), as you know, the first five tags are usually the most important.

So, how do one maintain a healthy balance? Especially when it may not always be easy for @leoalpha to find quality contents shared on the chain within the first 24hours of healthy curation window.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

totally addressed two big issues for me. I struggle with the tagging. If I'm being honest, try not to judge me too much, I've always just put 10 tribe tags on my posts. I've known that this was wrong, and haven't taken the time to research how to improve it yet. The other issue I've had is finding my blogging niche. without having the framework in place in my brain to write articles relating to specific topics, i've found a lack of ideas flowing through. I like the idea of blogging about the next best crypto thing and tagging @leoalpha though, so maybe my niche will be in that direction. Anyway, great work and thanks for the education.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

True alpha!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

The other shout out is to use the #Leoalpha. Not on everything. But on posts you make about hidden gems, up and coming projects, or "the next big thing".

I will be adding this to my toolbox of places to check for alpha! Good insight to use this tag (and to always use first five tags that are most relevant to the content and not tribe tags).
