Top Tip for Polygon (MetaMask) Users: IGNORE SUGGESTED GAS FEES, use ADVANCED SETTINGS to set them HIGHER!

in LeoFinance2 years ago

TLDR - YOU NEED 60 GAS ON POLYGON ATM for a FAST TX, this may be more or less at the time you're reading this post - use the Polygon Gas Tracker to set your GAS Fees to FAST in MetaMask or risk enduring stuck TxS.

I've been using Polygon for a year now, and I'm excited to see the @leofinance team launching their new app, Polycub on the network.

However, it's worth a heads-up that while Polygon has the advantage of VERY LOW FEES, one of the downsides (probably because of those super-cheap fees) is that the network is often congested, meaning that your transactions can take hours to be processed, especially if you're using MetaMask's suggested (market rate) fees.

And having your transactions stuck for a long time can be frustrating, not only because you might be watching 'your' pool returns clicking down every minute, but also simply because you want to be done with your 'daily-defi-duties' asap and go have a life for the evening, without a queue 'pending transactions' in the back of your mind.

I've had to endure stuck txs because of too low gas fees on ETH and on BSC, but on Polygon this problem seems to be PERPETUAL.

I know this from playing CryptoRaiders which is built on Polygon, a game which requires me to do about 50 individual transactions a week, and the dysfuntionality is SO BAD I now do my tx duties in work time because it's so stressful, not knowing whether anything's going to get stuck.

In fairness Polygon, I'm not 100% sure whether it's Polygon being jammed up that's the problem or MetaMask failing to communicate effectively with Polygon when it estimates gas fees, but one thing I have learnt is to USE THE 'FAST GAS' fees as a base, but then add on more on top using advanced settings, this gives you much more of a chance of your txs not getting stuck.

How to Set Gas Fees in MetaMask (Polygon)

Firstly, start off your transaction on your platform of choice (probably on PolyCub if yer reading this), and when you click (for example) 'stake PCUB to kingdom) and MetaMask pops up DO NOT CONFIRM AT THIS STAGE, instead.....

1. Click on 'EDIT'

(NB your MetaMask won't show you 'advanced', I'd already set that)...

This will bring up the following (below)....

2. Click on 'aggressive' to get a base 'fast gas fee'

The point of clicking aggressive (don't confirm anything yet!) is that when you click on 'advanced' after, the GAS fees that appear will be the current 'aggressive' settings.

3. Finally adjust your fees UP EVEN MORE in advanced

Once you've clicked on 'aggressive' that will give you a base-figure, I tend to add on an extra 10 gas, ATM here's what I'm using.... with save checked for all future txs on Polygon.

You may just want to use the Polygon Gas Tracker to set your GAS Fees in advanced straight away.

Right now in fact the suggested high gas fees are 60, and a lot of folks in CryptoRaiders use that as a default amount.

Cautionary notes....

Note that 60 GAS is still only 0.006 MATIC but some contracts might make you pay more, depending on what you're doing, so you could be paying a few cents per tx in some cases, still not too bad.

VERY IMPORTANT - WHEN YOU SWITCH TO ANOTHER (BETTER) NETWORK CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS!

You don't want to be paying 60 GAS on ETH or BSC when a third of that would work for you and the FEES are much higher than on Polygon!

Awesome tip, thank you! Still trying to figure out where to focus with so many options! :)

There's a lot of good stuff to choose from, I mostly just moved stuff over from elsewhere!

Times lacks for all the stuff I want to learn! :)

Thanks for the tips but it makes me wonder why get on polygon when gas fees and congestion is so rampant. Wish hive had its own way of making smart contracts therefore bypass all these hurdles of just transferring assets.

Gas fee isn't the problem here, just congestion

It is luck of the draw with Polygon, even with 'high' gas you're still only paying >0.01 for every tx!

There were some talks of HIVE EVM. But that is a tough job for the developers to create. What I'm interested in the most is Koinos project from the former Steemit developers. I partially read the whitepaper and it was one of the most amazing and sensible things I have seen.

At this setting, how long does your transaction take?

Very rapid, a few seconds.

Golden Tip. My metamask hangs very often while using polygon and it doesn't work even when I try to speed up the transaction. This might help! Cheers @revisesociology and thanks a ton.

Fingers crossed, it's worked fine for me all yesterday evening with 60 gas.

Useful information and learning all the time. Thank you.

These things make me wonder how will HIVE handle congestion. We have never faced such issues before and won't have an issue for some time to come. But eventually more users will be onbordered with more DAPPs running.

very good advice, this cured my polygon ills. thank you.

Hi @revisesociology

Thank you so much for this post.
I was experiencing severe delays in the Polygon transactions, which are just like the ones I remember experiencing over a year ago when it first went live. Stacking delayed transactions, cancelling transactions to increase the gas and they would get stuck. It was very frustrating trying to prepare for the PolyCub launch. Add to that most fiat on ramps are made for Ethereum so bringing capitol into the system is already challenging.

But you provided a ray of light...if a little extra gas is good, a lot of extra gas is better...so thats what I did and it paid off in spades.

Thank you!

I just found this post, so I will figure out how to tip you or just give a high upvote for your reply. I wrote in discord about this problem, and I was told it was a non-issue, and I shouldn't have to adjust my gas fees, because the other person didn't have any issues paying the suggested gas fees. this made me feel like I was the only one experiencing these delays and stuck transactions. Which was not helpful. I had started using Polygon a year ago myself, and experienced terrible transaction times, and stuck transactions. I was very worried when Leofinance launched Polycub, and quite frankly entered all the farms late because I considered skipping Polycub. A big financial mistale on my part, as the early investors got the biggest share of the profits. The the X-Polycub investors took the rest.

Anyway, getting back to this polygon gas fee, I don't see these exact terms on my Metamask, which makes me wonder does the appearance of metamask change with browsers or is it version specific? I will check and upgrade mine if possible.
I get a threatening warning wehen I adjust the gas fees upward, that Polycub selected these middle fees and changing them will cause problems interacting with the site.
Do you see this warning?

Hi - I do get warnings but TBH these days I have just been setting the fees to 'aggressive' and it's been working fine!

I will follow your example.
