After Paid

in LeoFinance3 years ago

In an interesting move, Square, the Jack Dorsey company, has acquired AfterPay, an Australian Buy Now, Pay later (BNPL) company that has been going from strength to strength on the back of the Corona pandemic, which has seen consumption and debt increase massively. The deal is worth 29 billion dollars (the largest Australian acquisition ever), quite a figure for a company that is only seven years old and has only 16 million customers around the world. This indicates the real value of debt encouragement.

With no end to this wealth transfer pandemic in sight, the value of the companies in the business of debt encouragement, management and collection are likely going to increase as inevitably, when more take on debt, more are going to fail to manage their debt. Unsurprisingly, the number of people seeking advice for financial distress and debt management services is increasing.

According to Jack Dorsey:

“We built our business to make the financial system more fair, accessible, and inclusive, and Afterpay has built a trusted brand aligned with those principles,” he said in a statement. “Together, we can better connect our Cash App and Seller ecosystems to deliver even more compelling products and services for merchants and consumers, putting the power back in their hands.”

fair, accessible, and inclusive

These words sound great, but it should always be remembered who they are aimed at. One thing that I believe everyone should always remember is, No company cares about you. No matter the advertising, the pretty pictures, the rhetoric that the individual matters - you are just a number. Every move a company makes is designed with the express purpose of increasing shareholder wealth and has nothing to do with making the world or you better. The good things that are accomplished are done are done because they support increasing profits, not because they are the right thing to do.

If for example, environmental laws were to be taken away globally and there was no punishment for corporate pollution, regardless of what we know about it now, companies would very quickly make changes to their production to cut out the unnecessary costs of environmental consideration. If child slave labor was legal, they would be using it for as long as it made financial sense to do so. The only thing that stops companies acting worse than they do is, legal and customer consequence, and both don't seem to be very effective as the legal ramifications are generally less costly than the profits made and the consumer base only cares about getting what they want cheap and conveniently.

The incentives in the economy are very badly aligned to improve conditions for the average person, but very well aligned for extracting wealth from the average person and directing it to the wealth peaks. This isn't just at the financial level, the entire social network ingrained in society is directed toward consumption and consequently, increasing debt as various forms of peer pressure and social proofing that keep driving consumer spending on what largely adds little more than entertainment value.

There is nothing wrong with entertainment value, however when so many people are suffering in other ways, perhaps there might be more value in dealing with the causes of hardship instead, which ironically, is probably the focus on entertainment for many. Finding a balance can be a challenge these days, especially since there has been further disruption to our normal lives.

What is interesting, is that every individual seems to think that they are able to beat the system, that they are smarter than the companies and can come out on top. Yet, the numbers tell the story, as the corporations make record profits on top of record profits and household debt keeps increasing. These companies have everything they need to beat us, as they have all the data on how we behave and what we want, as well as hold the platforms with mechanisms to drive our behavior available to them.

The more debt we have, the less we can invest and the more we fall behind. But, those who can invest into what offers the best profit model, the greatest return on their investment, which are the industries and companies that are able to extract the most wealth. This means that those who beat the system and aren't sucked into the average consumer behavior, benefit the most from those who are. As said, the incentives are poor for general level improvement, because they are aligned in a way that the most effective way to generate wealth is to encourage others to give theirs up to the point they are taking loans and then, benefit on the interest earned on the debt.

The picture I have used for this article is of a slot machine, one of the many that are all over Finland in corner stores, takeaways and shopping centers. Every person who plays these games assumes that they are going to beat the game, that they have a chance to win and the more they play, the more wrong they become, as the algorithms tighten to return precisely what they are designed to return. The stories we hear of people "beating the system" give us confidence that we can too and it is our confidence that makes us largely blind to all the ways we are losing.

While bit by bit we are being chipped away at, it is happening globally on a mass scale and we can see this in the increasing speed that the wealth gap is growing. But because we only consider us as an individual in the economy, we are much like the proverbial frog in a pot, and the water is getting warmer.

It is funny, so many people fear the risk of investment, yet are confident gambling on the belief they can beat the corporations. The only way to do so, is not to engage. But, they are consolidating more and becoming increasingly integrated across platform, invading every space we interact and consume from, so keeping distance is easier said than done.

So much truth here.

I started a conversation with @ura-soul some time back that is closely related. The underlying cause for the state of affairs you describe is a lack of proper ethical guidance at a fundamental level in our social/political/economic system. Until such time that we make a conscious choice to change this critical failure no lasting or meaningful change can occur in our current system.

I have written an e-book on this matter titled Function and Dysfunction in America (on Amazon). In short the means to accomplish this change is a Constitutional Amendment that formally acknowledges that the Categorical Imperative is THE ethical foundation of Law and Government, as established by the Inalienability of Rights in our Declaration of Independence. Taking this step would actually mandate changes in our system (including economics) that would rectify all of the issues your article so correctly identifies.

One of the great benefits of Crypto and Blockchain (and in particular Hive) is the potential to achieve this very challenging change. Thanks for an awesome opening to possibility. Yet another great post.

Blessed be.

I don't think people think much on ethics these days. I guess it is partly due to the compartmentalization of behavior and seeing ourselves as disconnected individuals who have the right to do what is in our best interest, no matter what.

As more people get involved, they will essentially be forced into considering what they have been encouraged to turn a blind eye to so far.

Interesting times ahead!

Well said no one cares about the customer, its their profits they care about.
The debt trap is all around, people may not use credit that much anymore but they still keep falling into these debt traps.
Hope more people read this.

So many traps set, that avoiding one, leads to 4 more.

LOL that is so true. 😁

The main issue es financial education. They put the candy in front of the eyes of people with not enough knowledge to realize they are overpaying for those products which most of the time they probably do not need. It is very sad.
Authorities prohibited tobacco and alcohol advertising long ago and tobacco packs now show all the healthy harm you get when smoking. At least people are aware of that and they can decide to live with it being aware of the health problems they may run into in the future. They should do the same with online casinos and betting companies. Next, at least they should force these "buy now pay later" companies to add all the costs consumers are paying when purchasing using those services, most of them are not even aware of that.

If I take advantage of an old person who doesn't have all of their faculties, I am breaking the law. They use psychological tolls that are beyond our comprehension - they are good marketers.

I would not call them good marketers at all. They take advantage of people, that to me, to say the least, is a thieve, But is the result of the society we live in, everything is valid to increase the benefits of P&L accounts.

They take advantage of people, that to me, to say the least, is a thieve, But is the result of the society we live in, everything is valid to increase the benefits of P&L accounts.

yes, in the business world and for the investors, - they come to terms with it morally by saying it is marketing.

Some crazy stuff this insistence on keeping debt. It’s like a cheap 80’s movie where there’s going to be the cash 4 title loans all over the place. I think eventually it’s going to be putting your life as collateral with these things. If I get X loan, I’ll work for the slave shop for x number of years. Definitely not the right direction we are headed down!

It reminds me of the controversial stance that the world economic form cronies had that many Americans didn’t like. The peons didn’t like what our message was, quick let us rebrand and regroup!

Their message was “you’ll own nothing and be happy” as a way to promote us lower folk from not owning property, or even an appliance. It would all be leased and paid to the companies.

oh, I will answer the second part here :D

For decades we have been pushed away from ownership and finally we are beginning to see what the cost of not buying was. Crypto is probably the only way out of this mess now.

If for example, environmental laws were to be taken away globally and there was no punishment for corporate pollution, regardless of what we know about it now, companies would very quickly make changes to their production to cut out the unnecessary costs of environmental consideration. I'd say that this is not thaaat simple. Sometimes it's those corporations' best interest to keep such regulations high. Why? Because they are huge and can afford to more or less stick to these regulations, while still earning a shit tonne of money.

Very strict regulations make it harder for a competing company to rise up and effectively destroys the free market. A huge international corporate company employs thousands of lawyers which will get them through anything.

Poland, where I come from, is the best example, where there's a lot of bureaucracy everywhere. If you want to run a company, you are kicked in the ass time after time. Even though we don't have the highest taxes in the EU, we have the most complicated tax policy in the entire EU. Even professionals accountants have a hard time to keep up with all the changes, where you can have a major overhaul to the law every few months. Huge corporations have no problem with that, they have their lawyers. And even if they mess something up, they just pay some laughable low fine and they're good.

On the other hand, if you're a small business owner in Poland, you stress out every day. Should you lose some stupid paper or they make an incognito inspection, where you sell them a stupid lighter without giving the receipt and they will fine the hell out of you (that's a real story, BTW).

This is all very clear. Poland is colonized by many external powers, to the point where it's not rare for people here to compare its situation to Bantustan countries in South Africa.

While bit by bit we are being chipped away at, it is happening globally on a mass scale and we can see this in the increasing speed that the wealth gap is growing. But because we only consider us as an individual in the economy, we are much like the proverbial frog in a pot, and the water is getting warmer.

Eh, fighting for increasing people's awareness is the hardest fight. Especially that powerful parties fight all the time to decrease it.

Haven't been commenting for some time now! Thanks for the post, that was a good read. And great to see you feeling good and posting a lot again after your health issues. Stay healthy and keep up the great work!

Yes, once the company is large enough and holds a monopoly-ish position, this is the case. In many instances, they lobby for more barriers put up once they are at the top. Ones they can meet of course.

Small businesses are getting an unprecedented fucking over at the moment during Covid, all to the benefit of the conglomerates - because they needed more market share.

I have only visited Poland a couple of times, but one thing I noticed was the high amount if hierarchy in the offices, even among the young. It was uncomfortable at times for me, as people enforced their control over people below them, even when it wasn't necessary. Made it hard to train at times.

Out of work though, the same people were easy going and fun. It was strange!

Glad you are finding your comment stride again :)

I think this strange culture comes from multiple sources: one thing was that Poland kept very strict social hierarchy rules much longer than the Western Europe did. With low industrialization levels, basically until WW2 you had clearly defined nobility and serfs. Only a minority people could be considered a middle-class citizens.

In the meantime we also had partitioning of Poland, many uprising, a short independence and then, after WW2 we ended up under the Soviet regime. This also messed people's minds a lot, because it promoted upstart people, who were advancing their social status by cooperating with the authorities and strengthening their regime, and not based on their merits. And even if some people did not take advantage of this, they still built resentments against those which did.

All in all, it makes for a very poor working culture in Poland. Most of us are very hard working and rather competent, but our business culture is very bad.

I was in Lutz (I don't have the fancy L) on a business trip and went out with a couple of the clients for some food and beers. I really like the Polish humour, as there is a down to earth, matter of fact darkness in it :)

Thanks for the insight too. It is really interesting to consider what shapes us through culture and how far back the footprints go.

$29 billion? Over paid.

For 16 million users, that is what I was thinking too.

Such Such great company and it really fit that niche of people who had decent incomes to purchase expensive items but didn't want to go into debt.

I use after pay a bit. I just bought a treadmil on after pay. It's a fantastic initiative.

Well done to the Aussie team behind it!

I hope you invested directly into it and aren't just an enduser. At some point, these services are going to cause massive problems in society.

I wish. I did look at it when it was $2 but I wasn't at the point in my life where I could. We were paying off our first mortgage and saving for our build. Housing has taken a good chunk of our wage and still does.

I think we are now. I assume that for many reasons, suicide will go up to the point that euthanasia will be introduced so people can feel like they aren't killing themselves. It will be positioned as a medical procedure for the terminally indebted.

The only way to do so, is not to engage

We have all seen. or used to see news stories about Boycotts, they were big through the 70's-90's. Granted I do not watch TV news or TV in general very much in the last 15 years. People have short attention spans, the excitement goes out after 3 or 4 days of support.

Fifteen years ago I boycotted, (stopped buying their products), the electronics division of a company all over the returning of a battery. Customer service was to put it bluntly...shit.

People need to learn to stand and be counted, and not in a line to serve someone else but to serve themselves.

Boycotts seem very much out of fashion now. I wonder if it is because we are disconnected from each other, we no longer need to prove ourselves to our peers. Online, we can virtue signal without having to actually do anything, since no one knows us anyway...

That and the organizations/companies that would be boycott targets have simply paid to not have it wide spreads. They simply give google and youtube and facebook money to make the story go away. There use to be a lot of facebook revolutionaries, now just FB fake face virtue signalers like you said.

They simply give google and youtube and facebook money to make the story go away.

"control the narrative"

Agree with life's harsh realities

Unfortunately the world is a not a nice place, and not only have we have not all learned to play nice in the sandbox, but those who lie, cheat, steal and manipulate others get rich.

This realization doesn't however make me hate the world, it just better prepares me for it.

I hope you are doing better, nice to see you maintaining your productivity. I think nothing keeps a brain sharp like working it.

bitterness doesn't facilitate healthy change.

I think nothing keeps a brain sharp like working it.

I hope so :)

This is an important concept:

bitterness doesn't facilitate healthy change.

I have had to deal with several changes on my job in this last year. I became angry when my contract was terminated during corona even though my employer wanted me to keep working, but they wanted to outsource my job, so I don’t get any benefits like sick leave, workers compensation insurance for injuries on the job or retirement benefits.

I was furious at first because with 15 years already worked, I only needed five more years to qualify for a pension.

On top of it all, I was asked to continue working as an essential worker and risk getting Corona with no Health benefits.

I was very angry, and I wanted to yell, scream and quit. But I also didn’t want to be jobless in the middle of this disaster. I found health insurance, paid for it out of my pocket, and continued working.

I have grown emotionally after dealing with this crisis, which continues, and if I had given into bitterness I would have quit, and been an angry unemployed man. You can’t do that when people are depending on you. It sucks, but you have to suck it up and move forward.

People ask me why I chose to smile and be happy in my circumstance, and I tell them that the only thing I can control, in this out of control situation, is my reaction, and my mood. I choose to be happy and enjoy my off time with my wife and kids because I refuse to let my employer take away my happiness.

Maybe I am just a fool, but I am just doing the best I can to be happy regardless of what life throws at me.

Hang in there Mate.

No job protection sucks. I freelanced for 10 years and it made it very hard to do things like get a loan for an apartment.

I was furious at first because with 15 years already worked, I only needed five more years to qualify for a pension.

That is shit!

It sucks, but you have to suck it up and move forward.

Unfortunately this is the trap of life they have us by. They know we need to live and have people depending on us, so can do what they want.

Maybe I am just a fool, but I am just doing the best I can to be happy regardless of what life throws at me.

The best one can do.

Yeah, I have been freelancing since 2005. But really just on paper, usually working for one company exclusively.
It’s a mixed bag of cookies, crumbs and rotten stuff. But it’s getting to be more crumbs and rotten food lately.
I may have to get another job to finish my time for the pension.
But the big thing is the medical, if you retire as a government worker with 20 years they pay your private insurance premiums until you die. So between the pension and insurance, I am now on the lookout for a traditional job.

I have never understood why AfterPay has such a positive vibe surrounding them.

People love them, the media loves them, they're the absolute corporate darlings of Aus.

Yet their entire business model is built on people taking debt they can't afford and not being able to repay it fast enough.

They're literally bottom feeders.

From a business point of view however, AfterPay's Eisen and Molnar played this perfectly.

Cashed out at the absolute top of tops.

Legendary.

They're literally bottom feeders.

Because most people don't care as long as they think they are getting what they want. They will complain later when they can't afford to pay the mortgage on their highly overvalued house that they didn't know and they were preyed upon.

From a business point of view however, AfterPay's Eisen and Molnar played this perfectly.

Yes and good luck to them. The business model might be a cesspool, but their timing was impeccable

It can be exceptionally difficult to disentangle from the legacy company and financial system. Everything seems set up to lure us into some kind of payment plan to make it easier to succumb to buying the eternal "upsell" that goes with every single transaction we ever make.

Consume, consume, CONSUME!

Even programs like Acorns Investing that look like they were created to help the average person in the other 99% get a foothold in the world of investing comes with sideline offers like "sign up for our rewards credit card!" designed to pull people away from actually investing and instead getting sucked into falling behind.

=^..^=
