This not exactly new - happened in the end of December 2020 - but I was inspired by this post written by my friend @coyotelation and decided to write a few words on it anyway.

So, Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Russell Okung is now receiving half of his $13 million NFL salary in Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin half of his salary wasn't paid directly by the team, but through third-party payment service called Strike, an application developed by Zap Solutions Inc.

Okung has made several statements about cryptocurrency and Bitcoin on Twitter. Here is an example:

Money is more than currency; it’s power. The way money is handled from creation to dissemination is part of that power. Getting paid in bitcoin is the first step of opting out of the corrupt, manipulated economy we all inhabit.

Even though Okung is not exactly the most famous player in the NFL, this stil is exciting news to me and hopefully yet another step towards crypto mainstream adoption.

That’s awesome news! People pay way more attention to sports so when sports players are opting to do this it will get a lot more attention. Plus he’s going to laugh his way to the bank when the bitcoin he’s getting spikes in price in the next 5-19 years and we have lots more use cases for it!
