My "Shitty" Investment Challenge

in LeoFinance4 years ago

I was nominated by @enforcer48 to participate in @trumpman's My Shitty Investment Challenge, this is my entry.

Without a doubt, my shittiest investment has been Steem. I poured a lot of my heart and soul into Steem and the community only to have 170,000 STEEM stolen directly from my wallet and see it taken over by sock puppet witnesses.

steem logo.png

After the Justin Sun & Ned Scott AMN (Ask Me Nothing) it was clear Steem was doomed. I immediately removed my delegations and started my power down 5 days later when the Steem Power returned. I would have been mostly safe from losing any Steem if it wasn't for a bug in Hive Keychain that canceled my Steem power-down when I tried to cancel my Hive power down. I lost about 4 weeks of power down time which would have allowed me to get over 90% of my Steem out. I did manage to get a bulk of my Steem powered down and sold as their theft from users took a lot longer than I expected. Many of us suspected it would happen at some point, but managed to get a few weeks powered down before it did.

I'm not that salty as there is still hope we will see our Steem and from Steem arose Hive. Hive has a lot more going for it than Steem ever did. There are some really exciting changes coming to Hive that will separate us from the dreaded just another Steem fork.

Most of my Steem value I got in Hive as well, and the price of Hive is still almost double what Steem was when it was stolen. That being said, I am a bit salty seeing Justin and his band of misfits raking in the Steem while the price still holds up. I know Steem will ultimately drop, but it will likely be a while. I hope I am as well as everyone else who had their Steem stolen directly from their wallets in a hard fork is able to get their Steem back and sell it for a decent amount before the price finally collapses.

What hurts me the most about this investment is the time and energy I put into Steem, the love and passion that was ultimately melted away the moment Justin Sun started to censor and steal from the user base. Without Steem we would never have Hive and I am thankful for that. I am excited to see where this journey will take us. I am confident we will go much further than Steem ever could under the direction of Ned Scott or Justin Sun.

I challenge @xxxxxxxxxx, @theycallmedan, @blocktrades to share their worst investment ever.

Make sure you check out the original post by @trumpman for the guidelines for this challenge.

So it's extremely shitty - shitty enough for you to win the "shittiest" prize - but it's not a big deal and you're not upset. Good stuff!

I'd say someone stealing $40,000+ directly from my wallet as a pretty big deal.

I am upset, how can I not be.

Oh, well at least you aren't too salty. (I thought upset and salty were synonyms but I guess not?)
I still believe you're going to get it back, and then some.

I'm probably a bit salty as well but I feel not as much as I am not really giving it much thought. If I think of it I'm pretty pissed but I just don't think of it. It is what it is, it's being dealt with, will wait to see how it turns out.

I remember reading the rumor and "leaked" list of people who were going to have their wallets frozen. It was crazy to me and I felt horrible for the people like you who were affected.

After years of building something, you have some random guy walk in and try to rip it away. I'm glad that we all got Hive to mitigate that attack. This feels better than Steem ever did

What gets me the most is how Justin Sun told everyone he could that we, the community elected witnesses who were in place years before he showed up, were the hostile witnesses that took over Steem.

Many people don't know the difference or care enough to find out.

It was a surreal experience, initially I was like, there is no way he will do this, then he did, then was like no way he will do that, and he did.

It’s even more bizarre he isn’t in jail for locking up customers funds and the rogue witnesses joining him for their $5M+ theft.

Like I said above, without Steem we wouldn’t have Hive and for that I am thankful.

Agreed, the fate is strong in this one, or call it destiny, I love Hive.

Sounds like a custody battle I went through. When you know what the risk is, assume it will happen and do whatever you can to eliminate the risk.

Your experience is definitely up there in the "shitty" list.

Thanks for sticking around on Hive after that.

Like you said, without Steem we would never have had Hive. It's absolute bullshit and you got fucked when they stole your Steem, but I am thankful Hive was able to semi-replace your loss. If all goes as planned, Hive will be much more valuable than Steem ever would have been and we'll all be glad the shitshow took place.

Is there any news yet on what's happening with 20 odd million Steem sitting with Bittrex?

Legally of course you should get all that Steem back.

That is a really shit way for an investment to turn shitty, but as you say, at least we have Hive, it's something I guess.

I invested in a few random cryptocurrencies and that may have been not the best choice.

What hurts me the most about this investment is the time and energy I put

THIS.

The association of intangible investment (time and energy) along with the money....

Only compounds the pain.

I lost $50k and more on a "data error" that wasn't handled well. And then the founder decided to say goodbye. Hurts every day as I think about it (because I also invested time and energy).

Treating it as expensive learning life throws at us.

I spent 18 months of my life trying to help a guy realize his crypto dream only to find out in the end that he DGAF about anybody but himself.

Oh well, lessons learned. That's the only thing you can say about it.

Onward and upward and may your next project be the one that makes you a millionaire (or whatever your ultimate goal is)!

I know that feeling as I am dealing with it right now with a close family member.

@trumpman is acting out again? lol what happened to his presidential campaign for United Shitdome?
by the way Justine Cunt reeks.

I'm still sitting on my worst investment and will write about it next week.

Is it a chair?

:P

I don't own any chairs!

It's a bar stool.

More like it :)

You forgot Gods Unchained.

:'( xD

That's up there. I'm hoping I can sell to at least break even. Been dragging my feet.

and you put a "xD" at the end, lol.

Wow! Bro! First time to know your story! I would like to here the side of @xxxxxxxxxx, @theycallmedan, and @blocktrades!

Well I can only imagine how that felt. I was on discord when things were unfolding and the effort put to try to keep things going irrespective of the ideological differences. I remember you being one of the strong voices then and it's quite unfortunate that you were robbed in such a way. There are many lessons to be learnt from that existence and hopefully hive does a better job at securing investors funds and putting in place protocols that will mitigate events like the steem hostile takeover

It really SUCKS ! And you shouldnt look what Justin is saying or doing it just doesnt help .
The world of cryptos gives a bitter taste in some part of our being but
We we must go forward , we must leave aside the scums and keep the beauty of
Connecting with amazing people , even if it is only one .
We cannot imagine how much this whole new world has changed us and has gave us on all levels .
Of course our time money is important , our value and we cannot say otherwise .
In any platforms or in any places we have given our energy and knowledge .
May you heart and mind be in peace , dont go where it hurts , let the scums be scums and Chose to be peaceful .

Mine was Scorum, I was Witness there with few friends, I understand you really well, I put a lot of efforts (not so much like you I think, but...) and some money, everything it's gone, sadly!

I'm reading your story and I've always wondered that, because I know that there were many people that they stole everything that those people had and with that the energy, love and passion for what they gradually built went away. Eventually everything falls under its own weight, for good souls there will always be something better

I posted about 2 articles in Steem in 2017 but then I never logged again and some month ago I tried to log in but I realize that I lost the account so I never got to use Steemit as you did but something that I can be sure about, is that HIVE is waaayyy better than when Steemit started so that is a great beggining and there is a long path to go still.

I'm really glad that the Witnesses managed to fork and created this new and better ship, I'm sure Hive will be what steemit never could

Now that you mention steem, I wonder what happened to the money they tried to steal at the last HF. It was a complicated thing from entender😂.

My shittiest investment is RORS token worthless game.

What happened with Bittrex? They really let the issue of stolen tokens rot. Is there an agreement with you guys?
