Scientific Report of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

  • The 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee was created to examine the evidence on specific nutrition and public health topics and providing independent, science based advice to the US Federal government as the various government departments develop the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans
  • The background is obesity epidemic & the related health impacts. More than 70% of Americans have overweight or obesity, and the prevalence of severe obesity has increased over the past 2 decades. The increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity at young ages is of particular concern because of their effects on the current health of the child as well as the risks of persistent overweight or obesity into adulthood.
  • The high rates of overweight and obesity are an important public health problem in and of themselves, and they are a driver for prevalent diet-related chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.
  • At present, 6 in 10 Americans have a chronic condition and 4 in 10 Americans have 2 or more chronic conditions. Various factors contribute to the prevalence of these chronic diseases. Prominent among these are unhealthy dietary patterns and a lack of physical activity
  • Across the lifespan, the typical diet Americans consume result in overconsumption of total energy, saturated fats, sodium, added sugars, and for some consumers, alcoholic beverages. Intakes of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are lower than current recommendations

Analysis and Comments

  • The problem of obesity and diabetes has not gone away. If anything the impact of COVID 19 on those with chronic underlying health conditions has only reinforced the challenge.
  • The scope of the dietary guidelines committee report is broad, covering nutrition during pregnancy, among young children and in the wider community. There are specific chapters on dietary fats & seafood, beverages, alcohol and added sugars. There will be specific guidance on consumption guidelines toward the end of this year.
  • Let's look at the first of these chapters, dietary fats and seafood. The report highlights that the intake of some key nutrients, that can be found in milk products, for most Americans ages 1 and older, is currently too low and at levels classified as "of public health concern".
  • According to the report, 88% of Americans consume too little dairy.
  • The report also highlights that seafood is also a high priority dietary exposure of interest, due both to its unique nutrient contributions, particularly the omega-3 fatty acids, and its role as a food component within dietary patterns. Seafood intake also is of public health interest due to its association with reduced cardio vascular risk as well as with potentially beneficial neurocognitive outcomes.

Well... So much things in this report

I guess when people start practicing healthy eating and cutting out junk, over weight will be less issue.

Good information about eating healthy, I know there is way to much consumption of junk food going on especially in the U.S. There are 2 good shows on Netflix about this that are both great informative show, 1. What The Health 2. The Game Changers. Maybe check them out when you have time.
