How I Became a Certified Open Water Diver through Hive

in LeoFinance3 years ago (edited)

One of the few underwater photos taken by Cameron's friend whom he arranged to take some photos of me while underwater. I was okay with not having a photo underwater because I was there for the training. I'm sure photos would come later in my next dives or when I already have my own GoPro, but Cameron really requested (or threatened 🤔) his friend take photos during my last dive.

I was really happy and inspired when I read @joshman's post about how he bought a tangible artwork through Hive. I also dreamed of having a similar experience; one that would not require me to convert HIVE or HBD into fiat. I'm actually dreaming of a day when real-world goods and services can be easily purchased using Hive. And then the transaction with @scubahead happened.

For those who might say it's not new, just indulge me in this. The world is changing and I know people have been using crypto as a medium of exchange of goods and services for a long time, but just let me celebrate my own milestone. While I am happy for all the big breakthroughs posted every single day, I want to celebrate personal achievements. And this is one of them.

I would like to emphasize this early that while money is integral to the transaction, it's the network effects that Hive provided for the transaction to happen. In short, I paid HIVE and HBD for my open water diving training and certification, but the circumstances leading to the arrangement made me believe more in the power of Hive. We are sometimes so focused on the price together with how much value we can extract from the chain that we fail to appreciate the best asset of Hive: the community. After all, without the community, everything else will eventually fail.

I felt like the universe is connecting me to the right people in the community for me to fulfill one of my biggest dreams in life: to become a diver. I already mentioned it in one of my posts that ever since I was able to acquire an old National Geographic magazine that contained some amazing underwater photos, I became obsessed with the life and the world there. Dreams do come true! And Hive made it all possible for me.

This was my comment on Laarni's introduction post, but I already observed some of her awesome travel posts. I was thrilled to know she's in Cebu.

It all started with one thoughtful comment. Just like that. That's why I value a thoughtful comment more than the upvote (unless that upvote can make a significant change in the potential payout haha). I could not remember exactly how everything started, but Laarni (@discoveringarni) and Yohann (@iamyohann) were just new to Hive last year. It was last June when Laarni formally made an introduction, but she's been posting some awesome travel blogs since she joined last May. I commented in her post and the rest is history. We became friends as if we've known each other for a long time, although we haven't met yet at that time.

Yohann, on the other hand, joined later after Laarni and founded @whoaretheyph. I got hooked by the idea that I became its number one supporter. I just find it very fulfilling that my HBD can alleviate one's financial situation even just for a day. It was in the middle of the lockdown and I found it interesting that my username has been out there, helping people through the small amount I contributed. Why am I including this here? I believe in karma and I think this is also integral to the story of why I was able to fulfill one of my life's goals. I was just sowing positivity and I didn't expect anything in return, but the universe has an awesome way of giving back.

Our first meet up last November.

The couple became my virtual friends without knowing who invited them. I can't recall anymore if I asked or they told me that it was Cameron (@scubahead) who invited them here in Hive. Cameron is also in Moalboal and he owns and manages Cebu Dive Center. One interaction led to another that we connected on Discord last September to discuss my intention to be a certified diver. I was already planning to use my Hive earnings for the training. I would just convert it to fiat, but I didn't expect him to offer that he can accept HIVE or HBD as payment. When he said that he would accept HIVE or HBD, I was in awe! Like it's double awesomeness! I would be able to fulfill one of my greatest dreams using HIVE as payment!

Part of our Discord conversation. I forgot to mention that I was given a big discount! Thanks again, @scubahead! So aside from paying in HIVE or HBD, I was also given a big discount and a t-shirt!

But it was in September and just part of the agreement that I would do the training after I resign from my day job. I already tendered my resignation and expected that I would be Moalboal last October, immediately that weekend after my last day at work. Well, life has its own ways. The initial plan to be in Moalboal with my workmates was cancelled. I got really sad, but when my other set of friends from work said that they were planning to be in Moalboal sometime in November, I invited myself to be with them.

I already had the funds enough for the training and the date has been set. The agreement was they would just do discovery scuba while I would be doing the open water diver training. Again, life has its own ways. Days before November 14, our water supply (or concession, I don't know, whatever) was cut off. We have a common water account in the whole compound and we would just pay our neighbour for our equivalent water usage. We diligently paid our dues, but they were not able to pay theirs. I hated that idea in the first place so I decided that we would have our own water supply. I paid for everything so the fund that was allocated for the training was used.

After that very exhausting second to the last dive. The current was strong during this dive, but I was in high spirits because of the sardine storm. Image courtesy of @scubahead.

I still joined my friends in Moalboal, but I didn't push through with the diving lessons. Instead, I just joined them in discovery scuba. This was when we had a meet up with the people in Moalboal. Great time, but I had to explain to Cameron the diving lessons would probably be in 2021 because life happened. The discovery scuba was a revelation though. I got excited about the diving lessons because of that.

After that Moalboal trip, I really thought that my diving lessons would be this year. I didn't expect that it would happen in 2020 because I didn't have another source of income except Hive. Since all the funds allocated for that diving lessons were already used, I had to save again. I think one of the reasons why I pushed through with it during the last week of 2020 was because Laarni offered that I could stay at their house while having my diving lessons. I was so grateful, but I was reluctant at first because it felt as if I would be intruding their house. She convinced me that it was okay, so I decided to visit Moalboal on my own.

Our baking session with Camille and Anais. They were actually the ones cooking. I just ate the banana muffins.

I couldn't ask for a better host. I had a great time during my stay at Laarni and Yohann's house. We talked a lot about almost any topic we could think of. Mostly it's about Hive though. There were times when we had to consciously stop our conversation because we felt that we couldn't do anything if we continue talking. The food is also on another level. I could make one post just talking about Laarni's food, but all I can say is this: I had one of the best, if not the best, monggo dish I have ever tried in my 27 years of existence. 😂

I think this was taken by Cameron before my very first boat dive. Image courtesy of @scubahead.

I was assured by Cameron that I would be okay during the whole duration of the training. I was assigned with one instructor, Adam Windust, who is the most chill instructor in Cebu Dive Center. Usually, it's one instructor for two students, but I had the privilege of one-on-one training, which is really great because all your attention is fixed to the lessons to be learned. I had a great time and I didn't have much difficulty in following his instructions. I was anxious at first, especially during the first dive, but I felt the assurance that everything would be fine.

With my instructor, Adam Windust. My hair is all over the place, I know. Don't judge.

I initially said that I would pay upfront, but Cameron said it would be after the last dive because there might be something that could happen to me while on the training. However, on the second day, he said that I could pay there and then because he already knew I would be fine. I was supposed to pay HBD in full, but the conversion at that time decreased so I paid the balance in HIVE.

Just a few seconds after the transaction, I took a screenshot and tweeted about it and also shared it in my Facebook account. Those who know about crypto were amazed while some of my friends got curious

I was really amazed by how Hive made it all possible. As long as both parties agree on the medium at which goods and services are exchanged, then the transaction will proceed. I'm just thankful to Cameron for the offer of making it all happen. I hope that one day, more businesses here in the Philippines will accept HIVE and HBD.

I finally have my ID! Thanks to Laarni and Camille for bringing it with them when they came here in the city about two weeks ago.

I guess that's all for this post. That's one of the added reasons why I believe in the potential of Hive to be massive in the future. With the almost instant transaction without fees no matter how large the amount would be, it is just awesome. With all that stuff, it's still the network effects for me. I was able to meet a lot of awesome people who helped me achieve one of my biggest dreams in life! Who knows, sky diving next?

This is still part of my Moalboal series. It took a lot of delays and procrastination before being published. Anyway, here are the links of the previous posts I've made about Moalboal:

Great post. I've been on Steem/Hive for over 3 years and, I have to say, the in person meet ups have been the highlight for me. It's so wonderful to meet people in person that you have been chatting with online.

I can't wait for the Covid restrictions to be lifted so I can go to another one.

So happy for you that you got yoru first diving lessons. Even better that you were able to pay for it with Hive/HBD. 😁

Thank you! One of the highlights of my blogging life was attending meetups. I even helped organize the biggest gathering of Steemians here in Cebu. Fun times. I can't wait to join meetups again.

I hope that more goods and services will accept HIVE and HBD. Venezuela has been in the forefront of accepting HIVE as a payment option. I read one yesterday that she bought pizza using HIVE. I want to have something like that in the future.

When you meet hivers or steemians before its always such a great feeling I read that in your blog and I have experienced it aswell. So yes I am a bit jealous. I have not dived for years @scubahead was in the powerhousecreatives so I know his place. Great share and so nice to see paid with hive

I really hope this pandemic will be over soon so that we can meet a lot of people in person. Having connections online is good, but seeing the faces behind the usernames is on a different level.

I got a really cool story how I acquired my dive certificate as well... and then I read this one. Mine's pretty cool.

Have you posted it here? Would be awesome to share with the community. Congrats to you on acquiring a dive certificate! Awesome experience.

It's just not as exciting as yours, Kim! Ha. Here's to the an opportunity you and I get to dive together some day. 🙏🏻

I'll give you the shortened version: A buddy I went through the apprenticeship with between 95-00 I hadn't seen for more than 15 years. I ran into him on a job and come to find out, he was living in Long Beach, Ca (my hometown) and was staying just down the street from me.

So he came by one night, we're playing chess on my balcony that overlooked the Pacific Ocean. He and I both kept talking about how we've always wanted to dive. Well, a few weeks later was my birthday and that dude showed up at my door like "happy birthday!" With two dive training schedules in his hand. He paid for both us to get certified and now I get to experience that weightlessness feeling only divers are familiar with.

Maybe I should just put something together about it.. it's an exciting story each time I tell it

It's exciting tho! Like it's one of those stories I would want to tell to my kids if ever I'll have one. It's a story of pure friendship. Getting to dive together with your friend is one hell of a story.

Ah, you don't have kids either. Makes all kinda sense now why we share this traveling sensation.

Your article was excellent. Enjoy the rest of your weekend @ybanezkim26.

Thank you! You too! Enjoy your weekend! I'm sure it would be awesome. I'll be all Hive so I'll just lurk around.

A great experience, that is basically two experiences that excites in this post.

The first one is the dive training, something just great, simply an amazing experience. I confess that I dream of someday doing something similar.

The other event is equally important to be able to pay with HBD or HIVE a complete dive training. Wow, although as you say many people will not give it much importance but it is a personal success to get that service with HBD, besides the discount of course.

Undoubtedly this is the future, in Venezuela (my country) the Hive is a widely used cryptocurrency, I hope to see soon the possibility of exchanging HBD and HIVE for goods and services without having the need to convert it into Fiat money.

I am excited to think that this is already happening and that many people will accept to actually exchange their products and services in our favorite cryptocurrency.

Congrats on your diving certification, for the discount (hahaha) and most of all for managing to convert HBD into an open water diving certification.

Congratulations

I saw a post yesterday on how she was able to buy pizza using HIVE. I think Venezuela is on the right direction. Here in the Philippines, we are lagging behind to innovations like this. I hope we can catch up in the future.

Thank you! I hope you'll have the same story in the future as well. I know it will happen to you soon.

What can I say...you probably know what I think about your post.
Send everyone a virtual thanks from me for making this dream possible and showing how Hive can be a benefit with a strong community plus I am happy for you that you did it :)

Thank you so much! I'm so elated that a lot of people like you are celebrating with me in this achievement. To have an awesome community beats all the technicalities. That's why I'll stay here for long.

I approve of this use case.

Thank you! I now have the same experience as yours. More use cases like this in the future!

It's going to be awesome if we have more places where we could use Hive/HBD to purchase goods and services directly.

It's amazing how it all turned out, despite the delays, they all fell into place before the year-end. I am immensely touched by your post. You made us all happy with your visit and your diving card will always hold a great story behind it and for us fun memories to remember. I am grateful to Hive for our friendship.

Thank you for a millionth time! I'll always be grateful to you and Yohann for helping me make it all happen. I'll always treasure those memories with me. Thank you for the friendship! Always.

Our pleasure always 😊

Shared on Twitter, we must tell the world what hive can do.

Thank you so much! Very much appreciated!

One of the most inspiring and encouraging stories related to our blockchain I have ever read here. One of those kind stories that confirm that what we do here makes sense :) So proud of you guys.

Thank you, man! I hope you can visit the Philippines in the future so that we can meet. It would be awesome. The connections we have here makes this place a lot better to stay than anywhere else.

Yeaha! What a great story! I just found it through @creacioneslelys' comment after recognizing @homeedders' !ENGAGE 25 and then reading the reblog of @yolimarag post on @theycallmedan's https://www.facebook.com/hiveblocks initiative.

.... oh, and forgot to mention @tipu curate LOL

So great to read that about being able to pay for something with Hive, but it also makes me a little sad that I can't see it happening soon in so called "first world" countries. The value of Hive means that most people aren't interested, so it's not worth their effort. As an example, for me to do a diving course here in Australia, it would currently equate to 3200 Hive, assuming I could find something local. Then they'd likely add extra for exchange fees. That's a big chunk of what I have in my account. It just wouldn't go far here at all.

Perhaps it's currently more of a transfer of wealth to countries with lower costs of living, at the moment. It will take time.

I get you. It probably didn't happen to me @scubahead is not a Hiver. We need to have more exposure and then business will have their interest fixated on Hive. Or else, use cases like this would be few and sporadic.

Check out the last post from @hivebuzz:

Feedback from the February 1st Hive Power Up Day

This is really something inspiring. I hope that I'll be able to meet people here that would take Hive as a payment. The problem here in our country, most of the people who I talk to think that crypto is a scam. I think it's from all the get rich quick schemes before where their investments failed. I hope that your post will bring more people to adapt to crypto.

Thanks again for sharing this and stay safe always! I hope to visit Cebu one time

I actually find it ironic that those who think crypto is a scam are those who easily get tricked into investing real scams. They would easily dismiss crypto, but when you would tell them their money would be doubled after a week, they will immediately get interested. I think it stems from the lack of knowledge on how value is created. We only knew that we earn money by working and that really sucks for us as a country. This kind of mentality would only drag us further into poverty instead of exploring other possibilities out there. Anyway, I hope people will see the real value in crypto.

Thank you! You too, be safe always! I hope I can visit Baguio soon. It's on the top my list to visit when it's possible.

Yes I truly agree with you, I don't know why that's the mentality of some of our people. The get rich quick schemes. It's really the lack of knowledge that's hindering our progress.

You're welcome. I hope that's this pandemic will end soon so we could explore the Philippines even more. I also want to visit Cebu one day. Hope to meet you one day. Take care!
