My Green Weekend

in Weekend Experiences2 years ago

My weekend was another beautiful fall day. Finally some sun after 3 days solid of rain. Time to get the Drone out and to do my favorite fall activity, walking in the woods. Specifically in the "Green Mountains" of Vermont. How about that for Green!

These were the two most green pics of the day, that was full of photo opportunities, and three drone videos. I actually got away from work, and out a bit. I visited a local Pond (Fairfield Pond) and a local Lake (Lake Carmi) and nature center. Both of these pictures are of Fairfield Pond. It's pretty large for what I consider a pond. It's actually 463 acres in size.

Did you know that it's not the size that determines lake vs. pond? It's technically the depth. Ponds are defined by having a fairly consistent temperature and sunlight able to reach the bottom. I suppose this would vary somewhat based on water clarity. Lakes are defined by sunlight not able to ever reach some depths, and having at least two or three distinct temperature differences (thermoclines). Of course many of them were just named at random, so we can't always judge by name. Fairfield Pond for example is 42 ft deep. While Lake Carmi is only 32 ft deep and surface area of 1,375 acres.

I'll be posting those additional pics and videos over in our Drone community later this week, so be sure to visit and check our Drone Community to see those pics and videos.

The mountains in the far distance are viewing into Canada. They are even closer in the other shots.
Fairfield Pond is located in Fairfied, VT, and is about 15 min southeast of me. Lake Carmi is about 10 min North of me and just a mile from Canada border.

I had other good walks in the woods this weekend without the drone. I love to get out in the fall, as you can tell, there are already splashes of color popping up that will be much brighter in the next 2-3 weeks before fading and falling into winter. Here's hoping we get a few more nice weekends to be out and about, my work schedule still very busy and not able to escape during the week. Another 3-4 days of rain coming for us starting tonight hoping that and the cool weather start the color shift.

Beautiful green photos, congrats.

And thanks for the explanation about the distinction between lake and pond. I didn't know about the reasoning behind it.

@tipu curate

Thanks for that. I had to look it up myself after seeing how huge that "Pond" was! I think this is one that is mis-named.

Misnamed for sure. I also thought that the naming has to do with the size.

Hi @ksteem

I'm so glad you got out to fly a bit and take these gorgeous photos. I didn't know the scientific difference between a pond and lake. How are the temperatures there now, is it starting to get crisp already or is it still nice for autumn weather? I see you've got a few autumn colours creeping in there, but are most of those trees conifers?

Still a mix of days, the colder ones crisp for sure running 55F day and 34F at night, the warmer ones 60F day and 4oF night, but definitely feeling like fall. There are a lot of conifers or "evergreens" in that area, but quite a mix of those and various hardwoods up here. We have a few types of conifers, and a lot of Maple (largest Maple syrup producer), beech, aspen, birch, oak, ash, hawthorne, horsechestnut, crabapple, and other types here. There will be more of those colorful others coming soon!

I was immediately like wow that is really cool drone photography!!!

Am I in the drone group if not I'm going to have to go check it out and subscribe!!!!

Awesome. Welcome to the group!

Woof woof thank you!

Wow, it's beautiful. That's the best thing about the rain, it favors nature and its colors.
