Cloth, paper and scissors

Once upon a time there was a little girl who loved to play with dolls, Barbies were her favorite and her mother made sure to please her by buying her as many as possible, including accessories. She came to enjoy the building, carriage, swimming pool, horses, piano, handbags, clothes and shoes among other things, for her beloved dolls.

She also enjoyed making clothes for them, using scraps of fabric to make dresses, skirts and blouses in the right size for the Barbies. At the same time she learned to knit with two needles, it was fashionable to knit sweaters with that technique and a neighbor taught her, and the dolls were the official models for her creations.

Time passed, the girl grew up and left behind the dolls and clothes making.

Already a woman and a mother, she continued to be curious about this world of fabrics, sewing machines and needles. Imagining that she could make her own clothes, accessories such as handbags, hair ornaments and even curtains for her house, filled her with happiness.

Her good friend Yuli had some knowledge of cutting and sewing thanks to her mother-in-law and together in their free time at the office they would design essential clothes that her friend would later make a reality with a machine she managed to buy. But this little girl, now an adult, had to settle for just acquiring fabrics and creating designs. Perhaps a little push was needed for her to get her own sewing machine.

She is very curious about this craft, with her daughter she visualizes everything they could create if they had a sewing machine, the young daughter learned the basics of weaving a needle in times of forty, her grandmother taught her to spend the days of confinement.

On several occasions she and her daughter have looked for people to do what they cannot do for lack of a sewing machine and almost always the result has been a job that does not meet their expectations, that is when they remember that it would be excellent to do the job themselves. Perhaps they do not know how to explain what they want and for that reason they are dissatisfied.

Searching for information on a variety of fabrics and what each one is used for is part of her day, as well as following the social networks of establishments in the industry. Now she has a neighbor who, with only the experience of sewing for her children, motivates her and gives her ideas to execute. They have enjoyed buying fabrics together and the neighbor is the one who sews, they share opinions and the little knowledge they have.

Her style is conservative and sometimes does not match the neighbor who is more extravagant. She favors unicolor fabrics in earth tones, dark, for sports outfits for example, while the neighbor chooses multicolored prints that stand out from here to the moon. She still lacks her own machine.

Now at Christmas time, she wants to decorate her home according to the occasion, but without going overboard with the use of red and green. This week she talked with the neighbor to go out again in search of fabrics and make for the dining table, a unicolor tablecloth, with the placemats and napkins printed Christmas and cushions for the sofa to match.

For all the above described is that I select for this commitment the option of knitting and sewing clothes. The truth is that I would love to buy a sewing machine, a large amount of fabric and with no time to waste, sew and sew for myself, my family and my home.

There are locker rooms that look easy, but I know that it takes work, dedication and concentration. Making the patterns, cutting the fabric and then creating on the machine is a task that is often undervalued. I know the process up close so I admire and respect those who dedicate themselves to this craft.

This concludes my entry for @Galenkp's engagement #129. If you wish to participate I leave you the link for you to choose your favorite option.

Excellent entry, and very good point of view. Sewing well is not easy, it is an art, my aunt sews with great agility, but that was given to her by practice. Greetings.

Thank you for your kind comment. Sewing requires skills, creativity, concentration and patience. It's never too late to learn, I hope I can buy a sewing machine and let creativity flourish.

I liked what was told here, a beautiful story but I have a question if it is your personal story, yours and your daughter? If so, it could be of help in some doubts regarding this world. I have a knitwear shop on Instagram, it's @siriuscrochet and we also sew clothes, it's not openly on the market yet. If you need help with any questions, we will be here, everything adds up, nothing subtracts. A big hug for you ✨

Hi @dojeda thank you for your kind comment. Yes, everything I narrate in based on my life haha and my daughter's life. Thanks for your help, I'm writing down the name of your store and we will have another way to communicate.

Thank you very much for your help. 🤗

haha!

This was relatable. It sounded like my life in fact. I've always used scraps of fabric to make clothes for my dolls, then I did the same for myself using my mum's sewing machines, till I eventually purchased a heavy-duty Singer machine. I still remember struggling to carry the heavy machine to the bus stop... Years went by and I left my machine in storage and I had to find creative ways to hand stitch my clothes. There's nothing like designing and making your own garments:)

Hahaha I laugh imagining you at the bus stop with a big sewing machine, is that you chose a professional at once. I want a small Singer overlock, maybe next year I will materialize it. My daughter sews much better than me by hand, she has transformed my clothes to her size or because she is short almost everything she buys she has to adjust and it fits her very well. I also bought her some paint and embroidery for fabrics.

No, that sewing machine was for pleasure. I loved the traditional ones that I grew up seeing my mum and aunts use, so I was determined to get one for myself. I enjoyed sewing my own clothes as a teenager, and I used to sew for my friends too.
I heard that there are proper Singer machines that are lightweight. If I ever purchase another machine, then I'd go for one of those 😆

Yes, my neighbor bought a Singer Overlock, it is small and looks like a toy 🤣 but it does its job very well. It's easy to move and doesn't take up much space.

I would buy one of those, they seem to cost about $300.00 here.

Oh, that sounds interesting. I'll look them up to see what they entail:)

Many memories came to my mind of when I made clothes for my dolls with my sisters.

I have a sewing machine that I received as part payment for a money that could not be returned to me, but it must be checked by a technician. I still don't know what to do when it is operative, I don't know if I should leave it for my use and learn a little of this art or if I should decide to sell it.

There are many of us who started making clothes for the dolls hahaha. If you have the machine, take it to a specialized place to have it diagnosed. Hopefully you can take advantage of it, motivate yourself and buy an economical fabric to start.
Don't sell it, first try to learn, I don't know, I would.
