Hello and welcome to the The Ink Well weekly fiction prompt. The Ink Well is a Hive blockchain-based social media community of creative writers. If you love to write short stories, we invite you to join us. Or peruse the work of our community members.

Before you post in our community, please be sure to read the community rules (right side of the page) where we outline the "do's and don'ts" for posting in The Ink Well. Note that we have recently updated them to make sure they are crystal clear and easy to read. Our community rules are designed to make our community a safe, welcoming, plagiarism-free space for self-publishing original short stories.

Okay! Let's review fiction highlights from last week and start a new prompt.

Highlights of the Week

Thank you to everyone who posted a story for last week's prompt, “All the way to tomorrow".

Be sure to read and support these authors for their work!

This Week’s Prompt

The prompt for this week is Legend.

Legends are stories passed down through time, and are often not fully substantiated. But the reality of today may be shrouded in mystery, and no one is certain whether the story of old is true.

We hope the idea of a legend, or the featured image we've chosen for this week inspires you! But feel free to use any form of the word legend. A person can be a legend, or have a legendary past. There are many possibilities.

Here are some ideas to get the creative wheels turning:

  • Once a man in a fishing boat was caught in a terrible storm off the coast of the fishing village, and he and his boat were never seen again. Now whenever there is a storm he is seen out there, trying to keep the boat from capsizing in the waves.
  • In a small town there is an ancient legend that the cats and dogs will rule the town for one day, and that day is coming.
  • Basketball legend Michael Jordan comes to town and all the fanciest restaurants and hotels are aflutter with anticipation. But he decides to eat at the local diner and stay at a comfy roadside motel. Tell the story.
  • And if you don't feel inspired by the prompt or these story ideas, feel free to peruse Prompt #6: 50 Story Ideas.

Where will you take your story?

Good luck! And be sure to remember the important elements of good fiction:

  • A good setting
  • Character development
  • Conflict
  • Dialog
  • A story arc and resolution

Weekly Prompt Rules:

  1. Deadline: You have a week to write for the prompt, until the next one is posted. (Note: You can write for any of the prompts anytime. This is just a guideline to be included in the weekly round-up of highlights.)
