Mythic Weekend Ranked with Only Welcome and Core Cards: Death Edition, 9 Wins...

A weekly recap of my Mythic Weekend Ranked experience, this time doing a challenge of only using cards from the Welcome and Core set. This is my last weekend doing this challenge. Previously I completed a Free-To-Play (F2P) Gauntlet with all the Gods to show that they can all compete and get Legendary packs. See the summary thread here.

Weekend 23 May 20th – May 22nd

Unlike last week where I was surprised by how well Magic did, this week Death did as I thought… badly! Not as bad as Deception, but it ended up being 9 wins. I started off trying an aggro version with Soul Burn and Fickle Cambion/FaithBreaker but it was really bad… then I thought about Control… then came back to Midrange with an Anubian theme deck. There’s just not too much synergy between the WelCore Death cards, and there’s a couple of good cards but it lacked midgame, which seems like a common thing in the weak WelCore decks.

Here’s the deck that I used, costing 0.036 ETH or ~$7. And for reference here’s the Aggro that I tried.

Lots of red here, but I did do better against Magic than Nature. Other than Blight Bomb, Death really lacked early removal, and the God Power isn’t great against Regen creatures. Against Magic, at least you can stack some Afterlife and Return to Board with your Anubians to maintain pressure even after a wipe. Interestingly I had a positive win rate against Light, and even in the mirror.

WelCore Analysis

I knew from the start that Death was going to have a bad time, because they don’t have that many strong individual cards, and their synergy at least within the WelCore set is not that great. The Core Refresh didn’t really help that. Imps are horrible, and the self-damage is too much without that much healing especially in this Aggro/Face meta.

Notable WelCore Cards

Blight Bomb and Ray of Disintegration, both unconditional removal spells, are pretty great. One issue I ran into though was Ward, as Death doesn’t really have any pings. Sometimes I had to grab an archer from the Sanctum for that. Vampiric Skull is a lot of value; its stats are just a little below vanilla, but bringing back a 3-drop’s stats is really good. Unfortunately, in WelCore stats is mostly all you can bring back; in Zombies for example you can bring back an Obelisk, or something with a good Afterlife with expansion cards. Corpse Swallower actually did some good work for me, once it’s down you can draw a lot of cards from it if it’s not removed.

Missed Cards

Compared to the deck that I used in the F2P Gauntlet Challenge, I mean it’s obvious that Zombies was a really good boon to Death. Not only can it create infinite value but it also provides leeching and has great synergy with cards like Netherwarm Lord and Overseer of Vitality. Other than Zombies and Board Wipe Death (which is one of the most expensive decks), there wasn’t much to Death’s arsenal. Of course, the new expansion introduced 1-cost Anubian decks.

Going Forward

Well, that’s a wrap! It’s a good time to finish too as this weekend coming up I’ll be travelling for a bachelor party, so no playing here. It’ll also give me some time to figure out what I want to do next for you guys! I’ll probably write a little summary too for this WelCore challenge.

I got a meme legendary and a golden Amazon which is just worse than Feral Shapeshifter... but some decent supporting cards.

I had the same troubles when I tried to make a WelCore death deck. Too many of the cards are situational and aren't worth running so you're scraping by for cards.
