Thoughts on the upcoming balance changes! How will it affect the meta?

Greetings everyone,

It has been a while now since I posted last time due to the high period of pressure that I have been having at work which made me play the game much less and barely squeezing in the 18 matches during the weekend rank event to get some rewards. I have been getting between 8 and 11 wins for the last couple of weeks which is pretty decent to me so hopefully I will be back soon with the decks I have been trying!

As for now, I usually do not do these type of posts or give my opinion and expectations on certain changes that are going to hit the game soon, but this upcoming update seems to be the biggest update for the game in a while now, so I wanted to share my opinion and expectations from these changes.

Now as the developers once announced, the game balancing will be back to how it used to be before; and that is they will not be implementing a couple of changes each at a time but rather a lot of changes all in 1 go. Despite me not liking this decision because I think it affects the game consistency of decks, it also brings more fun and dynamicity to the game. So without further ado let us jump so the upcoming changes and address them:

Upcoming Buffs

Although the buffs are not the most controversial or game changing update that will hit the game, there are still some cards that are worth highlighting and talking about.

 " "change 1.png""

Chiroptic Hemovore

Change stats from 4/1 to 3/2

Pact Fiend

Change stats from 6/1 to 5/2 Change text from” Roar: Deal 2 damage to your god.” to” Roar: Deal 3 damage to your god.”

These two cards are never seen in the current meta and even with these buffs I still can not see them coming into any of the current meta death decks which only leave the possibility of them being useful if some other nether cards were changed and a good nether deck came into play!

 "asenath.png"

Asenath, Hand of the Pharaohs

Change stats from 4/4 to 4/5

Now I do not think this change will make her a much more used card in this current meta, but it gives her more potential to survive more, which can make her useful in certain scenarios with Anubian decks against Nature and War and Light since they have no spells to reach the backline easily.

 "soldier.png"

Soldier of T'artess

Change stats from 2/3 to 2/4

Similar to the previous change, we do not see this card used a lot in this meta. But it seems that the developer are trying to keep the meta a control one not an aggro one which we are going to see when we talk about upcoming changes. As for this one, I can see it being useful if more Chosen One decks came into play!

 "remnis.png"

Remnis, Unscrupulous Gatemage

Change text from “Frontline. Roar: Summon a random 9 mana creature for both players.” to” Frontline. At the end of each player’s turn, they summon a random 9 mana creature.”

Now this to me was the most interesting buff among all of them, not for affective the game but for being the most fun and exciting among them. Although it is also luck based (because of what 9 mana creature you get) this leaves your opponent wondering should I try to remove it or should I try to get my own 9 mana drop and see how it goes? So it is a definitely worth trying as a fun deck though.

Balance Changes/ Nerfs

Now a lot of changes have been announced some of them are very controversial and effecting the game others are less effecting, so let us start with the most important ones:

 "drala.png"

Dralamar

Mana cost reduced from 7 to 6 Change text from ” After you play a spell, refresh mana equal to its base mana cost.” to” After you play a spell, refresh mana equal to its mana cost.”

AetherSnap

Change mana cost from 3 to 4

Now this is one of the most important yet controversial upcoming changes in the game. Some might agree that Dralamar should be brought back this way, other disagree about that. Now in my opinion I would say that this change is somewhat fair because now you can not do the full combo in only one turn, which gives a bit of room for counterplay rather than just eating popcorn and watching yourself lose. But one thing we all agree about is that this version of Dralamar is much weaker than the previous one.

 "lc.png"

Prayer of the Desperate

Change mana cost from 5 to 1 Change text from “Give +2/+2 to each friendly creature “ to” Heal you god for 4, and give it protected.”

Homeguard Protector

Change text from” Echo. Protected.” to” Echo. Frontline.”

Warrant Issuer

Change mana cost from 5 to 4 Change text from “At the end of your turn, summon a 1/1 Thaeric Militant. Empower 3: Summon a copy of this creature. “ to” Empower 1: Increase the mana cost of a creature in your opponent’s hand by 2, up to a maximum of 9.”

Line in the Sand

Change text from “Give each enemy creature “Can’t attack for 1 turn.” to” Give each enemy creature “Can’t attack gods for 1 turn.””

Now with all these changes combined together, I think we can safely say that the developers are trying to bring more control decks into the meta and make them more effective rather than it being an aggro one. All of these 4 changes gives more a chance to help survive till late and less change to finish the game early which clearly shows that light might be shifting towards control as well!

 "nat.png"

Penumbra Howler

Change mana cost from 1 to 2 Change stats from 2/1 to 2/2 Change text from” Roar: If you control two or more other Wild creatures, give them +1 strength.” to” Roar: If you control two or more other Wild creatures, add a 1 mana 2/1 Eagle to your hand.”

Singsong Satyr

Change text from ” Roar: Give +1 strength to each friendly creature.” to” At the start of your opponent’s turn, their god goes to sleep.”

Same as with Light, these two cards were the core of any aggro nature in the current meta as they were the only 2 non spell cards that gives wide strength to the board, and with these changes for them I can also say they are trying to make the meta slower as well. Now the question here is will these 2 cards still be used? I think their use rate will drop drastically but still find their place in some decks.

 "magic.png"

Blizzard Bolt

Change text from “Deal 3 damage.” to” Deal 3 damage to a creature and put it to sleep.”

Now this removes this spell from being in Spell damage magic decks, however it is now a much more useful card to help control decks survive till late game! Being a magic player I am definitely going to be using it much more in my decks after it is changed!

Metamorphosis

Change mana cost from 1 to 2

Now as much as this nerfs saddens me, I still think this spell will be used the same and still have its place in every control magic deck. Now the 1 mana change can be tough in certain scenarios but the spell is definitely still a good one!

 "ludian.png"

Ludian Thespian

“Echo. Tempt fate. Roar: Give +2 strength to another friendly creature.” to “Echo. Tempt fate. Roar: Give +1 strength to another friendly creature.”

Now this was the only change that effected the current deception decks, and it hits the aggro decks specifically which pushes the control deception decks more into the meta.

 "serris.png"

Serris, Arbiter of the Trial

Change mana cost from 5 to 6 Change text from “After you play a card with Echo, refresh 1 mana. “ to “While this creature is in your hand, its mana cost is 6 minus each point of health your god has lost below 10. Roar: Set your god’s health to 10.”

Now this change was the most intriguing change to me among all the changes. I kept thinking how and where can this card be used now since it is totally a different card now and definitely a weird interesting one. Let me know in the comments if you have any ideas on how it might be used to its full potential and if you think it can be a good card in a certain deck.

Final Thoughts

Now as we can see a lot of changes are going to happen soon and this will bring a lot of changes into the game. Some of these were very important and highly controversial that they might be reverted or changed after they are tried on the PTR so remember these changes are not final and can be reverted at any moment.

Now as of my final opinion on these changes, I think it is hard to say whether they will make the game a more interesting place, or ruin it and make a boring place where only 2 or 3 decks are used in all of the game, but what I can safely say is that the game is shifting more and more towards the control meta (I do not know if this was intended or not) and that there is also several very interesting changes that I can not wait to see how they effect the game overall.

Let us just hope that the control Magic will still be a good deck even after the changes :D. I usually do not give my opinion on any of changes but rather try them after they were implemented but I wanted to make this post because there were several changes that peaked my interest.

Now that was it for this one, let me know in the comments how do you think these changes will affect the game and whether you like them or not, I will be sure to get back to you and I will see you on the next one.

Mad Love, Peace out <3

Sort:

They hit hard Aggro Nature and Aggro Light, not Aggro Deception. But they will most probably after such big changes. And I am waiting for what will follow, how they will cripple what Deception currently has.

I am not happy because some of my cards will significantly lose in price. So what we try to do is to predict what cards will get the higher value after upcoming changes... Control Deception isn't what should be supported. My least favorite Deception card is Witherfingers - probably it'll be good for the game they'll nerf it - although recently I got - at last!! - two of them from level-up packs. So cards that are in between Control and Aggro can arise. Hope Heroic Brawler will become meta since I have 58 meteorites for sale (and 2 golds for personal use). :D

Asenath -- if they want to make it useful, they should add at least "Ability / Roar: summon a 1-mana Anubian and give it deadly". Or "At the end of the turn".

What about "Ability / Roar: summon a 1-mana Anubian and turn it into Priestess of Takhat"? This will be popular for sure :D

Pact Fiend / Chiroptic Hemovore -- Nerfing aggro archetypes alone will open doors to some others. I hope Aggro Death with Over the Line will find its way to the top. Pact Fiend / Chiroptic Hemovore could potentially be a part of this. They at least look interesting unlike Asenath for Anubians.

Some of the cards I had also will lose their price significantly but it's okay I guess.

It seems to me that they are trying to push a more control meta because most of the changes were bad for aggro cards and good for some control ones. Metamorphosis is one I am most sad about since I play magic. As for control deception its still as good as it is now I guess and maybe a bit better with a slower meta. Also they said the next changes will touch Anubians so even better for control decks!

The meta boogeyman are still around, Control Light, Relic OTK War, Heirloom Death. I wonder if they are going to have a light touch or gutted them like Aggro Light.

Did not face a lot of them this week was mainly aggro deception mostly I am up against.
