How did I end up with this purchase? Feel free to get some context here.
I had a lot of coffee last night and it's been quite a while since I stayed awake until morning. Staying up so late reminded me of how I hate the sun after 6 AM. My body was complaining that it wanted sleep despite having caffeine running through my veins. You know what they say, listen to your body.
My phone suddenly lit up, showing a notification from the shopping app I used.
My drawing tablet's going to be delivered today.
Excitement and dread wanted to shake my sleepiness off but this time, rest comes first. I need all the energy for incoming events within Hive PH and Hive Pizza.
I crawled and turned into a burrito. Good morning, world. And good night...
My phone loudly rang and disturbed my slumber. What time was it? 11? Ugh, no.
I answered the phone, wondering if it was going to be a delivery man or a hiring manager. It was the former! He said that he was already waiting by the gate. Without pause, I got up and retrieved the package, "Thank you, Kuya!"
Rest was very tempting and I tried to get more of it. My body had other plans... I was palpitating from coffee and the rush of excitement was not really sleep-inducing.
Package time, it is.

I cut through the bubble wrap and almost panicked when the cutter reached the box itself. Good thing it had another bag protecting it! I ordered a Star G960S Graphics Tablet and an anti-fouling glove manufactured by XP-Pen. A total cost of PHP 2023 (~USD 36).
The box contained a couple of things: the drawing tablet and its battery-free stylus pen, 10 extra pen nibs, a pen-clipper, a USB cable, a USB to USB-C adapter, a USB to Micro USB adapter, and the Quick Guide booklet. All of them were safely packed in plastic and I took them out to take a better look at them. Were the plastics biodegradable? Nah, I doubt it. I wish it were, though!

Since this is the first time I've ever had this piece of tech, I am surprised that the Star G960S feels light. I'm scared of dropping it! I removed the film protecting the screen but kept the one covering the buttons - they look like they could catch a lot of fingerprints. The medium-sized glove's fit was okay, but next time maybe I should pick up a small one.
I haven't used a pencil and a sketchbook for years... What more could I do with a new, shiny tool? I took it for a spin without bothering to look it up.
| I opened Paint and tried to move my pen around. Where's the pen pressure?! Silly me didn't know that Paint doesn't support that.

Getting used to a drawing tablet takes time, I guess. I switched to Adobe Photoshop and tried to write. My handwriting looked better on it but it still felt confusing. |
I took a couple more tries. Found a brush that didn't suit me, tried to do a couple of strokes, some squiggly lines here and there... You can see them below! How do you practice these things?
I also tried using GIMP on my older laptop but the keybinds are different and I did not want to spend more time fumbling with all the settings.

Honestly, the more that I think about this drawing tablet, the more I feel excited despite my glaring inadequacies. This goes without saying that I am absolutely doubting my abilities right now.

By the way, there's a community called Geek zone where you could review tech gadgets https://peakd.com/c/hive-106817/created. I didn't know that we can use those drawing tablet with GIMP. I personally use linux and it's nice to know those stuff works for GIMP and maybe Krita too!
Thanks for the recommendation, Macchiata! I was hesitating to post since the majority of there were in Spanish. Linux seems like an interesting OS to use but Windows is so convenient... I can't get away from it!
Also, you're right geek zone is majority in Spanish but when the communities in on Spanish, they're also welcoming to English speaking users too & you don't have to actually translate the post. I don't think the community also rejects English as they said "Contenido en español, ingles o bilingüe." but yeah maybe we need some sort of general community for reviews which again, due to many things, it would still be the same;filled with bilingual content. I get how windows is convenient and superior when it comes to creative works. For example, in linux, I can't use Adobe and there's no good alternatives that just do the same thing but since my focus is also more on programming, it makes more sense to me to use linux, though I also have windows in separate laptop for editing stuff.

The conversation at The Terminal drew me here (pun not intended!) so I wanted to stop by, and say hello! I've never used a tablet such as this. But have messed with several different apps and software for drawing. An artist, I'm not! But I do love taking photos and using various apps to make them... well, something cooler?
I've always been a believer of, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and I'm betting before too long, you'll be creating awesome graphics!
So... is today a happy Monday? Well... it's still Sunday, 11:01 pm in my world. But like I mentioned in The Terminal...
