Lost connections and broken timelines

in OCD4 years ago

Not much has really been going on thus far today, as I have literally spent the last 12 hours with Smallsteps at home as we didn't have the results of her tests yet, so even if she had been healthy (she had a slight fever yesterday afternoon again) she wouldn't have been able to go. However, she has no officially been certified, Corona-free - so if her fever doesn't return tonight, she will be able to head to daycare tomorrow. She has now been home for over a week and even she is itching to get out of here.

Because of my intensive start to last week, my wife was home and then I was home during my furlough days with her. This was my first day back at 100% time and I called in to stay away from work - however, I also have to work - now that my wife has finished for the day, as I have a client delivery tomorrow evening (it is to a US location, so I will work quite late) and I have to prepare for it. This is the first "real" opportunity I have to do so, however thankfully, it is not like the one I delivered last week and is instead something that I could likely deliver relatively in my sleep. Makes things far more relaxed and pleasant.

I am also meant to go on a two week vacation starting next week, but I might postpone a week of that if possible and save it for later. This time was scheduled for renovation, but because there has been a hold up on one of the contractors, it might be wasted if I am actually home for it. The problem is that I have deliveries booked all over the place at the moment and if I am required at home on short notice, I might not be able to take the time when I want it anyway.

One of the things that I am absolutely terrible at is scheduling my time well, which is exacerbated by the fact that most people don't schedule their time well and my work currently has a lot of interdependencies, which was why the lead into the last delivery was so difficult. Everyone was everywhere and it is sometimes hard to predict just who will be needed for what and when - so people on vacations (including myself) had to essentially be drawn back for hours or days at a time. In my case it was days. My supervisor returned from holidays last week and realized this and I will take the hours at some other point in time.

Scheduling is an interesting issue in the world today as small breaks here and there can have dire consequences for the workflow. For example, right at this moment my internet connection blacked out and then I realized why. I changed to a hybrid connection (4G + DSL) about a month ago to increase stability since both my wife and I are largely working from home, only to discover after many hours and technical visits, that it isn't possible in this house for some reason. So, I had the option (I put this into the contract just in case) to return to my 4G connection if it wasn't suitable. The problem was, they put an end date on the 4G and even though this was sorted out last week, they didn't update the end date - which is obviously today.

The problem is, I need a connection for my work tasks which is fine, as I am sharing my phone connection now - but if this had happened tomorrow night when I may still have to deliver the client session from home, I would be screwed with my phone connection only. A date here or there, an hour missed, a connection gone for who knows how long completely screws up the schedule. And then, there is the time it takes to course correct the immediate needs and then fix the remaining issues once priorities have been addressed. Everything affects personal schedules and all of the other things that are in line get pushed and rescheduled.

I am currently in chat with the Telco - they have been friendly over the last weeks and I can't complain about the service, but the hours spent on this have been ludicrous, especially since there is no change in the connection they will deliver. Hours that could have been better spent I am guessing on pretty much anything. Anything at all. Although, I was looking forward to seeing how the hybrid connection would perform, as I think it is a good idea to put the unused copper back into service, considering the lines (to most houses) are already laid and there is close to zero traffic on them.

Speed - we all want more of it.

It is funny how I (and likely others) have become so accustomed to have things at our fingertips fast, while I remember the images loading one line of pixels at a time - and that was on a fast 56K modem! These days, we wait for very little and then we schedule around the immediacy of delivery of all things - meaning that our schedules have been tightened to a far more precise timeline, whereas not that long ago we would meet at "high noon on a day, with high noon likely having some variation in it, considering it relied on the perception of the sun and the time of the year.

It is no wonder so many of us struggle with impatience.

I am still on the line chatting with the service people and again, she has been great, but it is a half hour of my life I won't get back and it is a half hour that would have been spent doing something more important. But, hopefully once it is sorted it will be sorted for a while - although I did put into the contract earlier that when the 5G is available in the area, I wouldn't mind giving it a go...

I wonder how many hours of issues that process will have.

I think tomorrow I will do my very best to deliver from the office (I prefer it as I have a far nicer set up for delivery there) so that I don't have to fear these issues at home and if the connection does cut, it has nothing to do with me.

However it will likely have repercussions, the client could feel that the poor connection issue is with your company trying to cut corners. Bad connections are very rarely seen as the fault of the service provider. The first thought most have when they can not go somewhere particular on line is it is the Companies Fault. ie: Hive is down, it is Hive's fault, not cloudflare, not hackers, and certainly not your local service provider since you can surf elsewhere. How often do we think it could be the companies service provider? The provider of electricity, (power outage). Our first thought is always toward a problem at the company.

Help lines you just have to love how long it takes to fix the most minuscule problem.

However it will likely have repercussions, the client could feel that the poor connection issue is with your company trying to cut corners.

Yes, that would be the case - however, the company I work for has probably among the widest and most stable connections in the country -almost 2 years there and it hasn't gone out once. I am pretty sure they have a fibre optic line to god :D

Generally we do blame the company we are dealing with directly. It is part of the reason I am a patient and friendly customer of help lines too - it isn't the individual who answers the ticket fault my connection got cut, I don't blame them. On top of this, it will get me faster and better service and potential upgrades if available.

I'm glad we found a pretty decent and fast company here in Alaska. The cost of using the phone with it's limits on Data was becoming pretty expensive. The large phone company has since changed their price structure, finally offering unlimited, but I'll still stay with the one we have now.

I try not to get frustrated with the help line people, sometimes that is hard to do though.

Again it is a strange reminder, as since coming to Finland 17 years ago, my Internet has been unlimited. It ja stsnfe in the western world to have limited connections now I think, considering the reliance on the Internet to function. Finland also has a law that everyone has to have an Internet connection available to them free of charge and even though slow 1- 2M or so, it is enough for elderly people to do their banking and surfing.

America has in many ways fallen behind the rest of the world, even parts of the world that would be considered third world in the States, such as Kenya and Nigeria, and Peru, and lots of eastern Europe, and old Russia. To much upper echelon greed I think is most of the cause, if a buck can be made by squeezing the common man the the squeezing will continue for as long as they can make a buck.

Oh and congrats on being in the top three of earners, pretty diverse top three in that report.

if a buck can be made by squeezing the common man the the squeezing will continue for as long as they can make a buck.

I am hoping that this is going to shift over the coming years as the common man takes ownership.

Oh and congrats on being in the top three of earners, pretty diverse top three in that report.

Lol yeah, I am the outlier as I get a little engagement ;D

Not Corona and she is doing fine, thanks :)

Bad connection or no connection can seriously painful in this online world.
hopefully everything can come back to normal.

It is on again, although it seems to be running incredibly slowly - in comparison to what it was an hour earlier. I will likely have to get them to look again in case they have given the wrong speed.

Oh yeah, we have become so trapped in the IT connection world that every mishap is seen as a catastrophy.
4 Gig is a luxury, as we are still on the 3 Gig system here. My PC (15 years old) will throw a tantrum if I were to stick 4 Gig into it lol.

The amazing thing is that the mishaps always happen when we have something urgent on the go.
Our little Alcatel, One Touch modem seemed to give up the ghost a few nights ago when my wife had an urgent meeting on her PC first thing in the morning. No Modem, no internet.

Problem was that the meeting schedule was 7"30am in the morning and the IT shops only open at 9am.
So we could do nothing about it!

At 6am the next morning I switched everything on and on impulse I changed the modem connecting cable.
Bingo! Internet was back.

Wasted days and wasted nights hahaha.

Good that you are rather going to do it from the office and hope that your connection will be restored soon.

The amazing thing is that the mishaps always happen when we have something urgent on the go.

Murphy's Law, I suspect.

Hardware failures can be a nightmare these days with ISPs as they have everything posted here. Something breaks, it takes a couple days. Yeah - you can buy your own - but that is going to set you back and then if you change connection, it might no longer be supported.

Exactly and it seems that they have us by the short and curlys my friend.
Ever wondered what would happen if the world would totally switch off for a couple of days?
Bedlam assured!

Bedlam assured!

Probably people would be in so much shock that they would just stare at their blank screens until the internet comes back or they starve to death.

Hahaha, that,s why we believe in being prepared lol.
It might never happen as the money gods stand to lose too much, but one never knows lol.

This is why I believe that 7B people will soon have the internet... can't let anyone keep their earnings.

7B? Now of course you know that I don't understand Finnish slang 🙂
Oh wait, maybe you mean 7 Billion owners.
Did you see Christiano Ronaldo's new R160 Million Bugatti?
With that money we can food many townships for a good few years!

Internet connection is the infrastructure beast that needs to grow continuously to fulfill the human desire. We want our internet to be speedy, non-glitchy, flashy and the latest.

I have heard somewhere that the City of Toronto was contemplating the possibility to include internet service as part of the government services alongside electricity, water and heating. This idea ranks internet as the basic necessity. On the other hand, there are issues of broadband internet connection availability in rural Canada. The need, speed and reliability of internet service are relative. In the urban areas, we are striving to achieve the best and the latest internet technology we can get in the world. Whereas in rural areas and other parts of the world, we are struggling to provide basic internet services.

I know I went in a random direction following my own chain of thought.

And, congratulations on being the most valuable author on the HIVE blockchain platform last week. I knew that you write good but did not know you were the most valuable author until I read that post on @leofinance.😇

Yet we watch cat videos and memes ;D

This has been the case in Finland for years - with everyone having to have access to a free internet, albeit a very slow one. Good enough for online banking and emails though. Finland is quite small in comparison and pretty much the entire country is covered by a 4G net.

Really? :D

Really? :D

Oh, you did not know that? Let me find that article for you. I was boasting to myself (since I don't anyone on Hive to brag my success) that I got a reply from the MVP 😇

Finland is quite small in comparison and pretty much the entire country is covered by a 4G net.

Ours is not there yet. We are trying to make sure that the rural lands have better broadband connectivity.

Ah yeah, I did see that one by dalz. I think if you check those top paid accounts you will see that I am one of those people who replies to as many comments as I can get to. I am no MVP, more a workhorse ;)

Ours is not there yet. We are trying to make sure that the rural lands have better broadband connectivity.

It takes time, but at least it doesn't require laying copper cables to every house.

Your humility 😀

One thing I can confirm with you that the more a workhorse you are to reply to comments, the more the MVP you are for the newbies. Good luck for the next week.

I don't know why we sometimes think these things happen only in our country. I would never have imagined that in developed countries there would be problems with speed or internet connection. Right now, when even kids are watching classes online, we are eager to have connection plans that will make our lives lighter and less stressful. Although you say that you are not a very good person scheduling your time, you are a person "tidy" with your time, so surely you need to take advantage of the moments in pending things and not talking to the phone company to get a better connection. Hopefully everything will work out and you can have that vacation you need and want so badly, @tarazkp. Greetings

Technical issues and human errors happen everywhere :) I think that it won't be too long before all 7B people have full access - the profits are just too high for companies and governments to leave on the table.

I am pretty tidy with my time, plus I work best under a bit of pressure :D

Hope you are well!

You're the second in one day having internet connection issues I read about on Hive and I bet there are many more we don't know about.
Having a reliable internet connection these days is an absolute must! Even without the pandemic lockdown, being connected to the world, being able to take care of your finances and not only, is very important.
I'm lucky to have a good internet provider that has never let me down during the years.
I hope you can get things sorted. Good luck and I hope your daughter gets well soon.

It is interesting to consider how much we rely and how little most of us can do without an internet connection. It is a point of control as we can't provide it for ourselves - we have to rely on corporations and governments to provide the resources.

That is very true and not exactly healthy

lol, the issues of internet scares me.

It's funny that from Jan to march, I had issues with my ISP every other day. Then I was worried during lockdown, what would I do if my internet goes for 3-4 days.

Luckily, my ISP has provided the best service in the last 3 months with just minor issues.

I still remember once I was margin trading BTC position at night, something like 1-2 A.M. Suddenly, my internet goes off. My phone's internet wasn't working too. Lol, I spent the whole night thinking would I get liquidated or not when I wake up next day.

And then I realized, how much I depend up on internet now.

Everyone needs a good connection, with high speed.

I wonder if the ISPs have had to upgrade in order to keep corporate customers as they take precedence?

I have never had the balls to margin trade - have fun with that ;D

Everyone needs a good connection, with high speed.

If there was a "basic human right" ... :D

I have never had the balls to margin trade - have fun with that ;D

Lol, I just trade btc and eth on margin. Actually, used to.

There is a guy Nyuu. He sat in front of his laptop, studied btc 1 min charts 12 hours a day for one year, and started trading. He achieved 40,000% yearly returns on btc and eth. Trading 1 min candles. LOL, talk about skills.

He once entered a trading competition, started with 0.01btc, and by the end of the month, he had 2 btc in his account. That's how I got to know about him.

In the past, I used to do it for money. But now, I just do it for the thrill. With a very small amount.

The more I do trading, the more I understand that how peaceful and safe investments are as compared to trading. It was the only reason I powered up a small 6k hp. So that with time I can see my investment grow.

There is a lot of draw in the fast results, but it will likely burn most people, especially when it comes to trading BTC as there are likely far more losers than winners.

Yepp, that's true!

Office work has another advantage. No one with their relatives can take you away from work. It's my second day of vacation and I already realized that working from home is not the best option.
