Perhaps the main attraction of the old city is the Vyborg Castle.
The castle had a hard fate, it burned in flames, rebuilt, modernized. There are now plans to install an elevator in St. Olaf's tower.
Why is there an elevator in the old tower, you ask? I am against this idea. This will disturb the interior of the tower. However ... not everyone can climb to the observation deck along these steps along the walls. And there are many who wish ...
Let everyone choose the option they like.
It's time for us to walk along the narrow streets of old Vyborg. Paved with cobblestones, these streets go up, then end in a rather steep descent. And here and there witnesses of centuries come across - old buildings. Some were more fortunate, others less fortunate, but each of them has its own life.
One has only to look around the corner and the picture can change dramatically. I am not an expert on architectural styles. I can only show what I was a witness to. Specialists can find here architecture for every taste and choice.
The front facades here give way to shabby courtyards, but all together they create their own unique flavor and evoke the smell of time.
You can wander around these streets endlessly. Here you can spend hours looking at facades, balconies, roofs, chimneys. Admire courtyards, trees and canals. Yes, there are also canals and a lot of water. As well as the famous Mon Repos Park. I don't know if a tour of this wonderful park would be appropriate in this community, although from a landscape design point of view, why not.
And on this we say goodbye.
Take care of yourself.

There's always that question of whether to install an elevator or not in old towers/structures. I see what you mean, the placement of the lift and how it will affect the interior of St. Olaf's tower is critical because of the existing design of the staircase.
For unavoidable reasons and adaptive use and accessibility, what do you think of a circular panoramic/glass elevator with frames that match the color of the existing handrails?
I couldn't help pondering on possibilities to make it work although, I would opt to take the stairs because of its existing shape. Cool post!
Olaf's tower is empty inside. It's like a huge stone well. Apparently there used to be wooden floors on the floors, which burned down in a fire.
Now this huge void with stairs along the walls looks mesmerizing. It has its own charm.
I think building an elevator inside will kill all this ancient beauty. Even a glass elevator will destroy the integrity of the space inside.
If there was a survey on the construction of an elevator, I would vote against
The Spirit of the time lives in this tower. It will be a shame if he disappears.
But that's just my opinion :)
Thanks for stopping by :-)
Glad to see you and thank you for your kind words!
Fair enough, when there's a petition against the elevator we'll know who's behind it 😁 Cheers, it was a pleasure.
I'm afraid that the matter will not reach the petition)))
One of the companies will win the tender, the castle will be closed for visits ... and we will ride the elevator ... maybe :D
Are those pictures from this era? Wonderful captures. and yes the elevator's idea is quite weird but everyone should get the chance to explore the heights so that's cool. the façade looks very fascinating.
I took these photos in August last year. When processing the photo, I wanted to enhance the impression of the old city.
Personally, I am against building an elevator. He will greatly disturb the Zeitgeist living in this tower.
But it's not for me to decide
Anyways that was a compliment, great pictures :)

Hello @bambuka, I'm delighted to see you here again! Due to its tall structure, the Vyborg Castle couldn't be missed when viewed on the city's skyline. I'd guess that their proposal to install an elevator at the castle's tower is a practical solution for tourists and visitors who are senior citizens and physically disabled to equally experience and enjoy the urban landscape from the top.
There's just something about the cobblestones on the streets, walkways, and alleys of this historic city that give it its timeless appeal! I've also noticed that there are only a handful of road lamp posts or vertical poles for street lighting fixtures as most of them are suspended from the overhead electrical cables and supported by the buildings on both sides. Is this a typical system there?
Yes, I agree, the castle and its tower are iconic buildings. The castle is built on an island, there is water all around, the old town starts across the bridge and immediately goes up.
If I have to go there again, I will purposefully take a series of pictures for this community. So far, I was just shooting the beauty of the old city with no specific purpose.
Yes, I understand that the elevator will not hurt for the development of tourism. We have to put up with the requirements of our time. But to be honest, I would be very sorry for the interior of the tower. All the mesmerizing space will collapse there.
Yes you are right. Poles of street lamps are not typical for old Vyborg. If installed, they disrupt the space and rhythm of the old narrow cobbled streets. I can assume that once the lanterns could have been installed directly on the walls. By the way, an interesting question. I'll have to check it :)
Sounds great! Thank you for posting awesome content like these in our community, I really enjoy them!
