So Many Chairs So Little Time : A Trip to the World's Biggest IKEA

in Architecture+Design2 years ago (edited)

Hello Hive,

While I burned the midnight oil for the last two months, Hive lingered on my mind. I'm afraid I had put blog writing and engagement on the back burner. To fellow bloggers and Hive friends, I have truly missed out.

When I shared a work burnout post, called A Compass Who Had Lost Its Bearings, several events took place that shifted things after that.

A very dear architect friend living overseas who I mentioned in my post read the said piece. She flew to Cebu during her short vacation where we spent days reconnecting. It had been seven years since I last saw her and during her visit, she convinced me to give the design career another shot.

This gave birth to a working partnership when an architectural project unexpectedly landed on my lap. Simultaneously, I also got involved in a french bakery project that's opening by the end of the year.

For the first time in a very long time, I found myself perusing stores again for materials and furniture without anxiety. The kid who tiptoed to reach for blueprints on top of the cabinet slowly made its presence felt.

During a recent trip to Manila to look for suppliers and accomplish administrative errands, we landed on IKEA.

While the rest of the world saw the popular Swedish Furniture Brand sitting in every major town or city, it was non-existent in the Philippines until late last year.

On November 24, 2021, the 67,760 square meter furniture showroom opened its long-awaited doors to the public. The world's biggest IKEA is situated at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. The gigantic mall lies not far from Manila Bay and is close to the International Airport.

From the domestic airport, with my luggage still in the trunk of my sister's car, we made our way to the Mall of Asia.

It was a busy Saturday and the IKEA parking was full to the brim. We were lucky to have found a free car space. We timed our visit around dinner hoping that perhaps shoppers may have made plans elsewhere but boy were we wrong when we saw the incredibly long queue lined up outside the Swedish Restaurant for meatball-hungry customers.

To those who didn't want to queue, buy your much-loved meatballs here for takeaway

I was fortunate to have visited many IKEA showrooms from different parts of the world, in the UAE, France, Japan and etc. I have grown familiar with and learned most of the names of the furniture by heart.

Like most of you who are well aware of the sequence of the showroom's identity, the branch in Manila followed suit. IKEA is well known for its engaging layout where one is obliged to follow the fixed path design.

According to this article, this psychological principle is called the Gruen Effect or Gruen Transfer. It was coined after an Austrian architect named Victor Gruen who discovered that a barrage of sensations triggers a mindset change.

The layout of the store immerses the customers in the immense sensual and emotional experiences from sight, sounds, smell, and touch brought on by IKEA's well-known in-store displays and vignettes.

These transport the shopper into a delightful overdrive that leads to impulse purchases. Even the sense of taste is stimulated which the food cafeteria is equally responsible for. The enjoyment of food increases the levels of dopamine that inspire the shoppers to spend more.

Perusing the carefully curated setups in the store drew many visitors to fill their shopping bags. These images will explain why.

My Takeaway

I must say even a minimalist will struggle to come out of the store empty-handed, haha. My siblings suddenly left with a cart full of memory pillows linens and accessories. While it took a generous amount of willpower, I still purchased ziplock bags.

I came back several days later to purchase bed sheets for our family use and pillows for a neighbor in our village back in Cebu.

The showroom may currently be the biggest in the world but I didn't notice much difference in terms of scale and size in comparison to other international branches. Perhaps the Gruen effect kept my senses fully occupied even overwhelmed and kept comparison disengaged, but it was certainly a fun experience to go through the maze.

Do you like furniture stores? Are you a regular IKEA shopper? Which items do you usually purchase when you visit or are you immune to the Gruen Effect?

I dare you to visit and leave the store empty-handed. :) If you had done so before, I applaud your strong sense of control and discipline :) Thank you for reading and wishing you a lovely week!

A place with multiple options to choose from, the range of designs and accessories for the home that are coming onto the market lately is interesting.
Cheers

Indeed, it had been a really long wait to have this brand available in our country and to have such styles and affordable functions within reach. Thanks for reading and for your comment.

I am so so so happy you are getting back into the field. It has been two months that even I had posted. It has been a rollercoaster ride in real life right now.
It was all about how to work in the field some times un necessary pressure and unhealthy work environment leads us to leave our passionate work. I am happy you found your way back in.
Missed you a lot on the platform but enjoyed your presence on insta.
Have fun! live life on your own terms. Have a beaurtiful day:) friend @discoveringarni

Hi Sahiba! How have you been? I noticed while visiting Hive friends' pages that you too were on a hiatus recently.

Crazy how life takes us for a ride, and how things shift unexpectedly, I hope all goes well and smoothly for you from here on out.

Life in archi and construction already carries a lot of pressure, so adding an unhealthy work environment to it can be extremely stressful. Have a wonderful weekend to you!

Having a lot of options is advantageous and disadvantageous all together. Like the title says... So many chairs but so little time. How do I decide what chair best suits my style ? Which one will last me long? Etc. It's become a tough decision now.

Hello @andesthetic, surely does make it tough to make decisions, so many choices. I guess you could start off by color and style based on your existing space? Something that matches well with your existing furniture if there are any? And then by budget and comfort and then narrowed down to whichever chair sparks joy for you?

They've really grown their collections throughout the years and have discontinued a few of them.

Hello stranger! Great to see you back and good to hear that you've been keeping yourself busy and out of trouble!!

I just went to our local IKEA last week, and yes it's pretty difficult to come out empty handed, there's always a reason to buy something, and usually it's price! I bought some chopstick holders ( the little things you rest your chopsticks on during the meal so you don't have to put them on the table) reduced from £4 to 10p. It would be so wrong not to buy it!!

Hi @livinguktaiwan 😁 it's been a while. How are you doing?
The design of chopstick holders I imagine you purchased is pretty neat. Is that the curved one?

Haha, same! They're tempting, especially the items inside the large baskets and then they're present and well lined up again before the cashier.

I had to toss the peeler back into the pile, went back for it, and tossed it back again. What changed my mind was the possibility that if I was not taking check-in luggage then I probably won't be able to take the peeler with me on the plane but I still got hooked by a few favorite items. Because of IKEA, I ended up getting a check-in suitcase so yeah I could have gotten the peeler lol. The suitcase was stuffed with IKEA products, mostly favors requested by a neighbor.

How wonderful to read it all changed after that post @discoveringarni 🥰
So nice of the friend to visit and got you all inspired again.
Keep going, it sounds like you are back on track 😎

I try to avoid shopping in any store hahaha 🤣 I so dislike it. But I can appreciate all the efforts they put into their displays and paths to keep the customer in and make them buy.
Have a wonderful day today. 👋🏻

Hi Jackie! How are you doing? Thank you:) The serendipitous situations that occurred after that post still amaze me and I think I have Hive to thank for that as well.

Gabriela Travels also contributed to that change without her knowing when she posted about a game called House Flipper. I played the game and it slowly brought back the interest and fun into designing again.

Haha, I admire you for your strong will in resisting purchases. It's a great skill 😄

Hi @discoveringarni 👋🏻😊
Could be better, have been battling a bad cold/ flu since last Thursday and haven’t been active much since, as it knocked me over. Luckily nothing worse, I tested but was negative.
Trying to catch up again and I just had to join yesterdays power up and post my growth again.
But I’m getting there… will have to, as we need to move out our apartment end of the month. So I have to start packing up again. Didn’t expect this before our “big” continental move. But that’s life, things do change hahaha also in between moves a move can happen hahaha 🤣

It is wonderful to read a story like yours here, so inspirational. Hive has some good influence in many ways 🥰🤓
That’s cool the game got you even more inspired again. Yay 😁

Hahaha I need to resist as with moving we need to reduce more and more… going back to basics I think.
Just can’t reduce my art supplies, those will be always many hehehe 🤭 and some of hubbies things.

So lovely to read your post today! Got me in a good mood again, thanks 🤗🤗🥰

Ahh, the flu, quite a relief it's a regular one. Yet, a flu is still a flu 😔, especially before a move. Wishing you a speedy recovery and then back to happy downsizing.😁

It is wonderful to read a story like yours here, so inspirational. Hive has some good influence in many ways

Thank you, so heartwarming to hear and I'm grateful for things to have turned out unexpectedly.

Just can’t reduce my art supplies,

Oh no, don't reduce, please keep the art supplies haha. I am glad I kept them during our move. I had no idea despite them sitting idle at the corner of our home, many of them were heavily used by my daughter. They bring joy so it's okay hehe. So glad to catch up today. May your big continental move run smoothly.

I know, never fun to have it. Thank you so much for the well wishes!

You are so welcome @discoveringarni 🥰🤗 anytime. Makes me happy too.

Hehehe 🤭 can’t reduce them, it’s my work. Although… it is not really “work” it is what I love to do. 😉 you know what I mean. Hope we find after our big move a place where I can have a proper art studio. 🎨🎨🎨 that would be the dream. With a garden for fruit and veggies 😉
We are getting there. Bit by bit, it is worth waiting and that everything takes longer than expected.
Yes, it sure is great to catch up today 😊👋🏻 Have a wonderful day further!
Thank you so much. Hope your inspiration keeps you going now you are back on track and little puzzle 🧩 pieces are falling into place.

Work without being work 😍 hehe well said. Ooh, I wish you find the space for that dream art studio with a garden. Sounds dreamy! Have a wonderful day to you too!

Thank you sooo much @discoveringarni 😊👋🏻 For all!

There are lots of chairs indeed, I can't help but stare at the natural colors of these chairs, they are so lovely.

Hi @afterglow! How have you been? Love the way they displayed these chairs. They did rows and organized them by color. Here's the black version with my blurred photo.

Ooh, Ikea visit na yan hehe. You live closer at least by land travel is possible 😁 The kiddos will have fun too. I know my daughter will be if she was with me.

I did try ordering online for presents sa family within the Metro last December and they arrived on time. I haven't tried ordering online to Cebu delivery yet. Nice being back on the Hive.

How have you been?

I am good and nice to have you back.

The black version is nice too! I wish I could buy some, but my son will surely break them.

Thank you, I suddenly had a mental image of your son with an ikea chair. It looks like you're speaking from a personal experience. Wishing you a great day ahead!

It looks like you're speaking from a personal experience.

You are correct, here in our house he likes to play with our wooden chair, now all of them have wiggling feet.

Wishing you a great day ahead!

Thank you.

Happy weekend to you Jonathan!

Happy Weekend (^_^)

Welcome back, you were missed :-) I look forward to seeing some photos of your new projects.

I was happy to see Ikea opening in Manila. I think that when companies like Ikea drop into your country, its a sign they have faith in a growing economy. I must ask though, did they build the store and bolt it onto the Mall of Asia or simply rejig the mall? I hope they didn't ditch the skating rink, that was the first time I'd ever seen ice skating in a mall!

I was in Manila when it opened in about 2007? I guess, around the same time that the first official Porsche dealership opened which I was lucky enough to bag an invite to. I thought boom time was about to come then, especially with all the new development going on around Makati at the time. Every visit, the whole landscape had changed. Happy days!

Anyway, best wishes and don't leave it so long next time :-)

Hi @nathen007 thank you 😁 I was itching to head straight there from the airport haha. It is indeed a good sign and how the stocks diminished and are replenished daily is unbelievable. I had to convince my neighbor who claimed the pillow case and bed sheets he wanted were available online in the morning and it was out of stock in the store mid-afternoon.

That's how fast the merchandise moves. Even on a working weekday, the store was busy. It's also available online so they deliver from every part of the Philippines. They have future plans of expanding to other regions.

Ooh, so cool you got to visit the mall when it opened in 2007! Your prediction proved to be true, boom time followed that. IKEA was built on the extension of the existing Mall of Asia (Mall of Asia) - Block 4 of MOA Complex so they didn't touch the existing mall but they built access that links it to the existing SM department store and a bridge to the MOA Arena Annex. The skating rink is still there untouched 😁

The last time I visited Manila was last year and I was still surprised to see so many changes. So it would definitely be a big change when you re-visit. A new Ayala Mall opened next to SM Mall of Asia and a lot of interchanges opened that I was unaware of that improved the traffic and which got me lost when I borrowed my sister's car to drive one evening. 😂

Hi Arni,
It's nice to see you back here!😁
I cannot imagine shopping in the world's biggest Ikea. All the ones that I have been to before have been quite overwhelming.
The items look amazing though, and the Swedish meatballs are always worth the trip there.
It's great that you found your way back into the design world:)))

Hi Camille! How are you guys?
Haha, it is still overwhelming 😂 I think even more so because it was packed with shoppers too. Each studio display had families gathered and shopping with family in tow is not easy. We've lost each other a few times and reunited at the cashier. It's nice to visit during weekdays when there are fewer people and it helps with urban therapy, a change in scenery from the remote countryside like the Daiso trips in Ayala, lol.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this newfound path again. I look forward to sharing the boulangerie once it's done since you know the owners (maybe here too if they'd allow me to). I'm elated to be a part of their journey because both of them are really wonderful to work with. Take care and hugs to you both!

like the Daiso trips in Ayala

Oh yes, I miss those trips.

It would be nice to see the boulangerie and the two owners for old time's sake 😁

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this newfound path again.

Yes, I wish you happiness with this 😍 🤞

My love to all of you ❤️

I thought about you when we passed Daiso in Ayala a few weeks ago. Big thankful and loving hugs 😍 I will mention to them you say hello

😍 Ok!!! Take care till we speak again :)))
