!Hola amigos de HIVE!

Walking through the streets of my city has become an accumulation of mixed feelings, among the beautiful structures influenced by the Spanish colonial style, the beautiful temples and squares, we have some buildings in a state of abandonment, like this beautiful historical heritage, which struggles to stay standing.

This is the House, Gallery 1890, an old shopping center, which was an icon in the city, has been abandoned for some years. But we can still appreciate part of its facade, full of beautiful architectural details that made it look beautiful.

Now, it is one more of the buildings downtown, which shows us the harsh reality of neglect and abandonment, it is a pity, because it is a historical heritage, a great work that, surely, is worth recovering.

I remember, I had the opportunity to enter a couple of times, here, there was a very popular cafe, it was a very busy place, with an inner courtyard and around it some stores, one of the best known was a Japanese store.

On its main door we can still see the year of its foundation, the one that gave it precisely the name when it became a shopping center "1890" and we can still see the details of the cornice, very beautiful.

Now the vegetation takes over the facade, in the best style of fairy tales, we see the branches protruding from its windows and roofs, I wonder if inside, there is still a princess.

I was doing some research on the internet, I wanted to find a picture of this building, I found it in the catalog of Venezuelan cultural heritage, when it comes to old structures, I surely find information in this book by Architect Francisco Sesto Novás and this was no exception, it was indeed built in 1890, with a Republican style design. Initially, it was the residence of a wealthy family, a hundred years later it became the commercial center that I knew in my childhood.

I do not know how much time has passed since it closed its doors, but time does not pass in vain, although it is a sample of the resistance of the walls of tapia, walls made with rammed earth. To think about that is incredible, truly the resistance of the earthen houses is something that surprises me and especially because Merida is a seismic state.

I have always believed that structures always need human warmth, when a house is left alone, its deterioration is much more aggressive and in a few years, it will surely be in ruins, something that does not happen when we inhabit it or are aware of them.

Timely maintenance and restoration are the key to keeping these architectural gems functional and beautiful for much longer. I love it, when they restore a place and respect the original design, after all these treasures are part of the identity of the region, of its landscaping, it is worth preserving them and honoring their history.

I understand that they had plans to demolish it and build a new shopping mall, but when it comes to Historic Heritage, legal things get complicated, so there are no permits for that. For now, all that remains is to admire what is left of it.

My language is Spanish so I use the translator DeepL, in its free version, the images were taken by me, with my Yezz max phone. The images of the facade before the abandonment was taken from the catalog, in the post the source is specified.

I am a lover of colonial architecture and seeing this place in such conditions causes a lot of impotence, it is as you say part of the cultural identity and an architectural jewel, but politicians do not see it that way. It should have been restored and given life again, but they have other things on their minds.
Thank you for taking us to know Merida as always.

Yes my friend, that's unfortunate, well in downtown Merida, we have several abandoned houses like that, precisely because their owners left the country or something like that, thank you very much, my friend!

Hermosas fotos @doriangel

It is a shame that such a structure is in such a state of abandonment, how much history there is in it, imagine that it was converted into a shopping center, it must have been one of the first in the country.

It seems unbelievable, but it is so, the houses in abandonment are finished faster than an inhabited one, the weeds quickly take over that space, while they discuss and agree, the government with some investor ends up falling.

I hope that in the future you make a publication of this work and do not say what happened to it. Beautiful photos @doriangel

Yes friend, it's a shame, that's how it is, you leave a house alone for a while and it deteriorates very fast. I hope you do a good project and everything goes well. Thank you very much for stopping by.

The old building looks like it have so much potential. I hope that even when they rebuild it, it will still hold the original design. I always feel some kind of sadness when the old building is gone 😢

Yes I also feel sadness, time does not pass in vain, it is a pity. I hope they initiate some restoration project and keep part of its design.

Wow friend, happy day!. I have never had the pleasure of visiting the State of Merida, but for some strange reason the music has taken me to Tachira and Trujillo. Not to compare, but I love that many places, especially the historic ones still have colonial architecture, and despite the wounds of time are still standing. That is the impression I get from many regions of the Andes, and part of the feeling I found in your own publication through the photographs. I love and admire that you find beauty in your own city, because it is indeed beautiful and I never lose hope that the same people now or in the future will put money and heart into these buildings. Excellent post!...

Thank you very much. I hope the music will also bring you to Merida. If it's about constructions, I always find some beauty, even more in those old structures. I hope you do a new project that keeps the facade of this one.

Greetings @doriangel, this is an interesting heritage of architecture! It's a pity though that it has been left in ruins, and despite being transformed from a historic mansion into a shopping center, the decision to abandon the landmark must have been a painful move. 😊👍

During your actual inspections on site, are the current building conditions still suitable for repair and further development? Or is it really necessary to demolish the existing structures and rebuild a new commercial complex from scratch?

Hello @storiesoferne Yes, it is a painful situation and unfortunately we have several buildings in this condition, some are being restored.

As to your question, I think the design of the facade, well, the original design and concept, should be maintained. I do not know to what extent the structure is deteriorated, but I imagine that vegetation, humidity and all external agents have taken their toll, I consider that it should be demolished. It would be best to do a thorough inspection and determine this, but for now, this is my opinion.

I hope that if this happens, if they demolish it, they maintain its characteristics and I think they should do it because it is considered historical heritage, but lately in some remodeling the original designs have been lost and it has not been positive.

Thank you very much, greetings and blessings!

Yeah, that's understandable @doriangel. It's definitely more practical to demolish the dilapidated structure (maintaining the original design) rather than building over the old one. We wouldn't want to compromise the safety of occupants due to architectural and structural failures in the end. Thank you for your remarkable insight. Happy Sunday! 😊

Greetings @doriangel, the gallery has a beautiful design with a marked colonial influence, the relief details on the walls are very attractive; It is a pity that it has closed its doors, it must have been a very warm place to appreciate art, although it is a work of art that reminds us of the country's colonial past, full of many stories that allow us to know important aspects of the society of the time, the state culture division have plans to restore it?

Greetings and blessings!

I do not know if there is already a restoration project, I hope so. It is worth it, to recover a place like this, it was a very comforting place to hang out. Besides its architectural and historical importance.

Thank you very much for stopping by, friend. greetings!
