Gothic Art: remarks for a debate

Historians have never finished agreeing on the origins of an artistic and architectural style that began to prevail in Europe, approximately at the end of the 12th century: Gothic Art.

P1070018_copia2.jpg

Commonly accepted the thesis, that it was a natural and necessary solution to the obsolescence of Romanesque Art, there are researchers who go even further, indicating that its beginnings coincide with the moment of greatest splendor of the Knights of the Order of the Temple, gradually disappearing and curiously, in the mid-fourteenth century, when the Order was dissolved for heresy, its extensive assets requisitioned and its last commanders executed at the stake.

P1070062_copia2.jpg

There are also researchers, who go further in time and relate the findings that the mysterious nine founding knights of the Order of the Temple found during their excavations in the underground stables of the ancient Temple of Solomon, with this import of a new technique and conception of the Sacred Architecture, revolutionary for the time and that would give as a result, those buildings, that not in vain have been considered as the Light of Christianity and by default, of Europe: the great cathedrals.

P1070061_copia2.jpg

Without reaching the category of cathedral, but without detracting from it either, this magnificent temple, located in the heart of the Cantabrian coast, is one of the most interesting examples of a Gothic church and Templar presence that can be found in the Iberian Peninsula.

P1070064_copia2.jpg

Located on a coastal promontory in the town of Castro Urdiales - the Roman Flaviobriga from the times of the Emperor Vespasiano, whose statue located next to the main entrance of the temple, thus recalls it - the Gothic temple, dedicated to the figure of Our Lady - certain documentation contained in the supposed Secret Rules of the Order of the Temple, attributed to a mysterious Master Roncellín, affirmed that with Her, that is, with Our Lady, 'his Religion began and ended'- of the Conception, it is located a few meters from the small castle or fort, inside which the lighthouse is also located.

P1070065_copia2.jpg

In the thirteenth century, both the temple and the garrison of the Templars were the main focus of attention of the crowds of pilgrims who arrived at the Cantabrian ports - disembarking in different places in the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias - choosing a harder path. -the so-called Camino de la Costa- but also much safer on its way to the Tomb of the Apostle, in Santiago de Compostela, saving the vicissitudes of a Spain that bled to death in the so-called Reconquest.

P1070059_copia2.jpg

And in the same way, as the artistic and psychological archetypes contained in Romanesque Art, Gothic Art also used its own: archetypes so difficult to unravel for the uninitiated, that even modern authors, such as the enigmatic Fulcanelli -author of two fundamental works on the subject, 'The mystery of the cathedrals' and 'The philosophical dwellings' - he described it as 'the language of the birds'.

Your images are absolutely beautiful, the lines, the history, truly an artist eye designed this all those years ago.

You have such a wonderful eye that misses nothing.

Hello @juancar347

Don't believe it, dear @dswigle. Although I have been traveling my country for many years, researching and delighting in this extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage, not always all the details are captured. Sometimes, no matter how keen your eye is, it is necessary to return several times to the same place, because there is always something that you missed on previous visits. But it even serves as the perfect excuse to return to places that somehow left their mark on your heart. Thank you very much for your always kind comments and a warm greeting.
No te creas, estimada @dswigle.

I have seen a gothic style church for the first time. Is it not allowed to enter?

It is a church that still maintains the cult active. You can enter during mass hours.

I would love to see the inside.

That is definitely a truly special place and I'm going to go in and have a look one day myself!

Thanks for sharing all of that info, so when I do go there, I'll know what to look out for!

Well, it is a beautiful place and city and highly recommended. Apart from this magnificent temple, you will surely find many wonders, such as the neighboring Ballena cemetery, which I advise you to see, the monumental promenade, the beauty of the coast and a gastronomy worthy of a king. Greetings

Oh @juancar347 I really can't wait! But I have to- until this pandemic settles and I can save money.
But don't worry, these places are definitely on the top of my list!!!

Always a delight to have you @juancar347 as a valuable member of our beloved community. Stay awesome.

Bonito domingo y abrazos, @juancar347

I pass through here without the intention of making a debate, but rather to bask in the beauty of your images !! Gothic art is one of the ones that fascinates me the most, especially Gothic architecture because of its shapes, its vaults, and angles. Although it is true that in America there are many cathedrals, especially with this style, Europe is the mother of these structures so close to heaven. Images 5 and 6 amazed me !! They have a very interesting perspective. Nice Sunday and hugs, @ juancar347
Abrazos
Gothic is expressiveness in its purest form, perhaps that is where the curious fascination it usually produces comes from. Used to admiring styles that preceded it, such as Romanesque, Gothic is a shock to the senses. I sometimes imagine it as poetry in motion, as a dancer doing impossible balances: grace, ease, daring ... But they are not always easy to 'read' buildings. Miguel de Unamuno, for example, said that for him the Cathedral of León was an open book. I have been to the cathedral of León many times and still consider it a difficult book to digest. As for your preferences ... you aim high, because the civilian that you see standing there is none other than the Emperor Vespasian, in whose times, after the bloody Cantabrian wars, the old settlement that gave rise to the city was built. Nor would it be bad to see you with a laurel wreath between your hair ... Empress Briti. Hugs

Thank-you very much

Old architectural structures especially those that are centuries old are like no other. I think our generation will never going to duplicate them.

I agree with your statement, except for one detail: nowadays, with technical advances, it is possible to copy everything, except one thing, the essence that gave this type of construction a life of its own. As you well know, in its development there were two unshakable notions: Sacred Geometry and Faith. And they did not arise anywhere, although this would give rise to deeper debates and in many cases rejected by official Science. Thank you very much for your comment and kind regards.

Well said. Thank you for your elaborate reply.

I love!

Hi Juankar
The Templars, those great strangers, where each one tells more stories, I have always liked their mystery and the books that talked about them, Castro has a lot of history that I hope to go through with you one day not too far away haha
If time and the pandemic permit
Happy week

In reality, the Templars are a gold mine for many writers, as their fascination and mystery continue throughout history. Castro Urdiales also has its Templar past and part of its traces are precisely in this church. If time and circumstances allow, we will soon be able to meet and eat there, while walking through such an emblematic and endearing place. Happy day.

When we deal with the real origins of architectural styles, this would seldom lead us to road blocks due to the nonexistence of relevant data, lack of information, or merely the inauthenticity of knowledge gathered. Otherwise, who knows? Perhaps it's true that Gothic Art originated from the Knights of the Order of the Temple or somewhere else. But, until more scientific evidence is collected to bring us closer to the facts, more recent revelations may be a far cry from what was initially discovered. On a positive note, interesting speculations like these issues always challenge us to squeeze our curious minds in our relentless pursuit of the truth. Interesting argument @juancar347. Have a splendid week!

It is true that everything is relative and that having little or no known origins, it is generally chosen to attach the easiest or most relevant option. That is precisely why I have chosen the relationship between the Gothic and the Templars, aware of the debate it can generate, especially in academic settings. But sometimes it is convenient to abandon established academic scripts and drift into the dangerous quicksand of speculation. Actually, there is a very close connection between this medieval order and this style. In fact, they were the bankers of Europe and those who could afford to finance, for example, the great cathedrals. And it seems very real, too, that this style was an import brought to Europe, both by the Templars and by the Crusaders who returned bringing with them the remarkable knowledge acquired there. I think that if there were, so to speak, 'an archeology of architectural styles', I think we would come to the conclusion, fantastic as such a statement may seem, of a 'common source' from which they all arose. Change the design, but not the math or the concept. Thank you very much for your always interesting comments and best regards.

@tipu curate

Thank-you very much

You have done great photography. This is a great place and it has a history of its own

Thank you. Indeed, this place has a lot of history and a lot of beauty behind it. Greetings
