How much fun does a novel about the construction of a cathedral have to be? They have no idea how good it can be to develop a story that revolves around something that could be as boring as knowing how they did in the middle ages to get the resources for such magnificent constructions as we see almost 1000 years later. It is even more impressive that you end up loving or hating (depending on which is the case) each of the characters, and that you end up being passionate about the novel and that it also becomes one of your favorites. Today I'm going to tell you about The Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follet.
¿Cuan divertido ha de ser una novela que trate de la construcción de una catedral? No tienen idea de lo bueno que puede ser el desarrollo de una historia que gire alrededor de algo que pudiera ser tan aburrido como saber cómo hacían en plena edad Media para conseguir los recursos para unas construcciones tan magníficas como las que vemos casi 1000 años después. Es más impresionante aún, que termines amando u odiando (dependiendo de cuál sea el caso) a cada uno de los personajes, y que termines apasionada por la novela y que además se convierta en una de tus favoritas. Hoy les hablaré de Los pilares de la tierra, de Ken Follet.
To explain the plot of this novel we must be located in England in the year 1311, in the Middle Ages, and to be more precise entering the era of Gothic architecture. Once located in this era you must know the different points of view that the author will give us from its wide and important range of characters.
Para explicar la trama de esta novela hay que ubicarse en Inglaterra en el año 1311, en plena edad Media, y para ser más precisa entrando a la era de la arquitectura gótica. Una vez ubicados en esta época debes conocer los distintos puntos de vista que nos dará el autor desde su amplio e importante rango de personajes.
The Characters:
Jack Jackson: He is the main character, a red-haired boy who lives in the woods with his mother Ellen, who is presumed to be a witch. Jack becomes a brilliant builder by becoming Tom's apprentice.
Tom Builder and his family, he is a master builder who travels from town to town looking for work.
Prior Phillip: is the head of a priory, which is nothing more than the place where a group of monks live together and are in charge of Kingsbridge Cathedral.
Aliena: Daughter of the Earl of Shiring, she went through many misfortunes in her adolescence because of her position. She has a future with the Kingsbridge economy.
Waleran Bigod: Former Prior of Kingsbridge and now Bishop of Shiring, he is a character of low morals and unbearable. He allies himself with the Hamleighs to rule in Shiring.
William Hamleigh: if I told you that there is an antagonist in all the novels I have read in my life that I hate more than William, I would be lying to you. He is everything a good villain could be: vile, spoiled, hateful, impertinent, pedantic and everything bad a person could be, but yes, God-fearing and above all, hell-fearing. Together with his parents, they manage to make us hate nothing more than reading their names throughout the novel.
Maud: Heiress to the throne of Great Britain, her bastard brother, Stephen usurps the throne, so a war begins to regain what belongs to him.
- Jack Jackson: Es el personaje principal, un chico pelirrojo que vive en el bosque con su madre Ellen, de quién se presume que es una bruja. Jack se convierte en un brillante constructor al convertirse en aprendiz de Tom.
- Tom Builder y su familia, él es un maestro constructor que viaja de pueblo en pueblo buscando trabajo.
- El Prior Phillip: es la cabeza de un priorato, que no es más que el sitio en dónde conviven un grupo de monjes y tienen bajo su cargo la catedral de Kingsbridge.
- Aliena: Hija del conde de Shiring, pasó muchas desventuras en su adolescencia por su posición. Tiene un futuro con la economía de Kingsbridge.
- Waleran Bigod: Antiguo Prior de Kingsbridge y ahora obispo de Shiring, es un personaje de poca moral e insoportable. Se alía a los Hamleigh para gobernar en Shiring.
- William Hamleigh: si les dijera que hay un antagonista en toda la cantidad de novelas que me he leído a lo largo de mi vida e deteste más que a William, les estaría mintiendo. Es todo lo que un buen villano podría ser: vil, malcriado, odioso, impertinente, pedante y todo lo malo que podría ser una persona, pero eso sí, temeroso de Dios y sobretodo del infierno. Junto a sus padres, logran hacer que odiemos nada más leer sus nombres a lo largo de la novela.
- Maud: Heredera al trono de Gran Bretaña, su hermano bastardo, Esteban le usurpa el trono, por lo que una guerra empieza para recuperar lo que le pertenece.
The plot:
Tom Builder and his family walk on the road to Kingsbridge in search of work after the Hamleighs fired him while building their son Williams' house, on the way his wife dies in childbirth and he gets Ellen and her son, Jack Jackson, whom he takes on as an apprentice. On his walk in search of work he arrives at Kingsbridge Priory run by the newly arrived Phillip, where he is given food and shelter for one night, since there is no work they must leave the next day, but during the night Jack burns the cathedral and there begins all the action and development of the novel.
Tom Builder y su familia caminan en vías a Kingsbridge en busca de trabajo luego de que los Hamleighs lo despidieran mientras construían la casa de su hijo Williams, en el camino su esposa muere dando a luz y se consigue a Ellen y a su hijo, Jack Jackson, a quien toma por aprendiz. En su caminata en busca de trabajo llega al priorato de Kingsbridge dirigido por el recién llegado Phillip, en el que le dan comida y cobijo por una noche, ya que no hay trabajo deben marcharse al día siguiente, pero durante la noche Jack quema la catedral y allí empieza toda la acción y el desarrollo de la novela.
There are many things I love about the novel, the main thing is the author's point of view; although the story is full of sexual scenes, Prior Phillip is a religious man devoted to God and to the construction of the cathedral. As for the construction of the psychology of the characters, I love that each one has a defined personality, so when we finish reading the 1400 pages we are either madly in love with everyone, or hating to the core the antagonists.
Hay muchas cosas que me encantan de la novela, lo principal es el punto de vista del autor; aunque la historia está llena de escenas sexuales, el Prior Phillip es todo un religioso entregado a Dios y a la construcción de la catedral. En cuánto a la construcción de la psicología de los personajes, me encanta que cada uno tenga una personalidad definida, así que cuando terminamos de leernos las 1400 páginas quedamos, o perdidamente enamorados de todos, u odiando hasta la médula a los antagonistas.
Being a historical novel, and even though it is partially from fiction, the author takes events from history in the Middle Ages, such as the murder of Thomas Bennett. One of the things I appreciated most is that he explains how a church was turned into a Cathedral; all the religious implications including a venerated relic or existing miracle, who gave the permits, where they got the materials and even how they cut each stone and the making of the mortar, how they got the money to pay for the giant gothic structures that tourists now see on their European travels. But most impressive of all, it never, ever bores you. So exciting is the way he tells the story, and all the drama that surrounds the characters, that you never want to tear yourself away from the novel.
Al ser una novela histórica, y aunque sea parcialmente de ficción, el autor toma eventos de la historia en la edad Media, como el asesinato de Thomas Bennett. Una de las cosas que más aprecié es que explica cómo se convertía una iglesia en una Catedral; todas las implicaciones religiosas incluyendo una reliquia venerada o un milagro existente, quien daba los permisos, de dónde sacan los materiales e incluso de que manera cortaban cada piedra y la fabricación de la argamasa, como conseguían el dinero para pagar las gigantes estructuras góticas que ahora los turistas ver en sus viajes europeos. Pero lo más impresionante de todo, es que nunca, jamás, te aburre. Es tan emocionante la forma en que cuenta la historia, y de todo el drama en el que envuelve a los personajes que nunca quieres despegarte de la novela.
The autor:
Ken Follet was born in Wales, England in 1949. He is an outstanding author with multiple Best Sellers. He was known in his beginnings for his Thriller novels, most of which I have read, he has about 30 novels signed with his name and about 15 with a Pseudonym. Even being a prolific author of the suspense genre, in 1989 he managed to surprise his fans with a historical novel completely different from what he was used to. He shows us his love for history and his particular passion for English cathedrals that led him to a deep investigation of the construction of cathedrals that led him to one of the best novels of modern literature, and despite being a Best Seller, for me it has become a classic that everyone should read.
Ken Follet nació en Gales, Inglaterra en 1949. Es un autor destacado con múltiples Best Sellers. Se conocía en sus inicios por sus novelas de Thriller, las cuales he leído en su mayoría, tiene alrededor de 30 novelas firmadas con su nombre y unas 15 con Pseudónimo. Aún siendo un autor prolíficodel género de suspenso, en 1989 logró sorprender a sus fanáticos con una novela histórica completamente diferente a lo que estaba acostumbrado. Nos muestra su amor por la historia y su particular pasión por las catedrales inglesa que lo llevó a una investigación profunda de la construcción de catedrales que lo llevó a una de las mejores novelas de la literatura moderna, y a pesar de ser de un Best Seller, para mí se ha vuelto un clásico que todos deberían leer.
I didn't say it at the beginning of this review, but like most of the books I have read in my life, this one was resting on one of the shelves at home; studying so far from home I always took a certain amount of books to read in my suitcase because I had no TV in my student room and in those days there were no smart devices (or Youtube) to distract me, so instead of filling my luggage with food, as most students who traveled far away did, I filled it with books. At least five books went in my heavy suitcase, and I didn't pack more because I knew I had to roll with it and I wasn't going to be able to carry it.
No lo dije al principio de esta reseña, pero como gran parte de los libros que me he leído en mi vida, este estaba reposando en una de las estanterías de mi hogar; al estudiar tan lejos de mi casa siempre me llevaba en mi maleta cierta cantidad de libros para leer porque no tenía televisor en mi habitación de estudiante y en esos tiempos no existían dispositivos inteligentes (ni Youtube) para distraerme, así que en vez de llenar mi equipaje de comida, como lo hacía la mayoría de los estudiantes que viajaban de lejos, yo la llenaba de libros. Al menos cinco libros iban en mi pesada maleta, y no metía más porque sabía que tenía que rodar con ella y no iba a poder cargarla.
Inside that suitcase there was always a book by Ken Follet, for those years thrillers were my favorites and my mom always suggested me which ones I could read. Among one of her many suggestions she gave me a very fat book with a beige cover and blue spine and back cover, I think it took me many months to start reading it, and when I had no more to read, I started with this one. And just as it happened to fans of the 80's it happened to me 20 years later, I started reading it and didn't put it down for a week. The same book rolled through the hands of many of my friends and we all felt love and repulsion for the same characters, it was incredible all the union that was achieved with The Pillars of the Earth with respect to my friends, something that I never repeated.
Dentro de esa maleta siempre iba un libro de Ken Follet, para esos años los thrillers eran mis favoritos y mi mamá siempre me sugería cuáles podría leer. Entre una de sus tantas sugerencias me entregó un libro muy gordo con una portada beige y el lomo y la contraportada azul, creo que pasaron muchos meses para que empezara a leerlo, y cuando ya no me quedaba más por leer, empecé con este. Y tal cual como le pasó a los fanáticos de los 80's me pasó a mí 20 años después, empecé a leerlo y no lo solté en una semana. El mismo libro rodó por las manos de muchos de mis amigos y todos sentíamos amor y repulsión por los mismos personajes, era increíble toda la Unión que se logró con Los Pilares de la Tierra con respecto a mis amigos, algo que nunca repetí.
Follet's success with the book was such that some time later he released a sequel: A World Without End, in which the successors of the old characters tell us all about Kingsbridge 100 years later. In a gift exchange many, many years ago, I had to give a gift to one of my best friends, so I did not think twice and went to a bookstore and bought this book as a gift; his face when he uncovered the wrapping paper is still engraved in my mind, he was happy and the rest of my friends were amazed and all wanted that book as a gift: it was the best gift I ever gave.
Fue tal el éxito de Follet con la obra, que tiempo después sacó una secuela: Un mundo sin fin, en el que los sucesores de los antiguos personajes nos cuentan todo alrededor de Kingsbridge 100 años después. En un intercambio de regalos de hace muchísimos años, me tocó regalar a uno de mis mejores amigos, así que no lo pensé dos veces y me fui a una librería y compré este libro para obsequiarlo; su cara al destapar el papel de regalo aún la tengo grabada en mi mente, estaba feliz y el resto de mis amigos asombrados y todos querían ese libro de regalo: fue el mejor regalo que algún día di.
The reason I chose this book for the review contest is because in addition to being a spectacular book, I also have cherished memories that make the review elevate the thrill of reading by sharing it with your loved ones.
