New Normal or Nothing's Changed? Informed & Aware, Preparing For a New Paradigm

The dire predictions of "New Normal" in a post-Covid world are intimidating, and the questions being asked add a level of angst:

What is Your "Understanding Of The New Normal"? How is it going to affect your life and what measures if any are you going to put in place to help you maintain the life that you want?

Even the way these questions are phrased promote a level of fear and the idea that suddenly "they" are going to limit and detract from my choices and my liberty.

I beg to differ.

Nothing has actually changed. It has only become more transparent. And the groups affected have changed.

After the French nuclear bombings of Mururoa Attol in the South Pacific in 1971, political pressure forced Australia to stop importing all things French, and banned all French migration for a while. Australians were likewise no longer welcome to go to France. I stopped taking French lessons. "No point teaching French anymore, because we'll never be able to go there."

I grew up in Australia during the Cold War, thinking that all houses should have a Dorothy-Kansas type hurricane cellar - against rampant bush fires a la Ash Wednesday when I was 16; the cellar could double as a bomb shelter against the Russians. I grew up with Sting, hoping the Russians loved their children because planetary destruction was imminent.

In Europe and America
There's a growing feeling of hysteria....
from 'Russians' by Sting.

When BSE "Mad Cow" Disease erupted in the late 1980's, travel to and from the United Kingdom was dramatically restricted, and there was widespread panic. Likewise the Ebola outbreaks, SARS and Swine Flu.

I caught swine flu in Australia 11 years ago, flew back to Thailand and was "apprehended on arrival" by Thai health authorities (I had a fever of 40.5C on arrival in Bangkok) and was required to quarantine at home for 10 days. Unpleasant and yes, I was very sick and unhappy to be confined alone at home with a then 5 year old daughter and no help. But it passed. I was more upset by the idea of potentially having infected others on that very full Thai Airways flight than I ever was about having my civil liberties curtailed. At the time, it did not enter my mind. Plus I was far too sick and grateful to be home. 😆

The biggest thing that has changed since Swine Flu in 2009 is social media. A moment-by-moment, graphic and interactive source of "information", panic and fear; such a superb propaganda machine.

You know when they ask which famous person you'd like to have dinner with? Well me, I'd like to interrogate Machiavelli about social media and the City State over a great bowl of pumpkin tortellini with an excellent Merlot on the side. But I digress.

What social media has done these past 6 months is create an unprecedented level of fear and paranoia. Governments around the world felt compelled to act and over-react, not so much because of real medical risk initially, but because hysteria is very bad for crowd control and "they" needed to be seen to be acting.

People have been constrained from traveling from one country to another, unfairly and without recourse to appeal, for eons. Ask any Israeli citizen about their recent holiday to Bali. What's different in this so-called "new normal" is that it's the white-so-called first-world people being constrained.

Normal is not "new" but has merely shifted to a privileged group who thought they were beyond what they have long required of other countries and people of different skin tones.

The Western African Ebola virus epidemic was the most widespread outbreak of Ebola virus disease in history—causing major loss of life and socioeconomic disruption in the region, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Dates: Dec 26, 2013 – Jun 9, 2016. Number of deaths: 11,323. Source

There was NO discussion about the wisdom of quarantine, closing borders or mask wearing protocols. Definitely no mention of denial of civil liberties. Why? Because it was brown skinned people in Africa.

But surely Covid is changing SOME things for us?

  • Given that social media is actually the ONLY real thing that has changed, the greatest changes I have been making is WHERE and HOW I source the facts I base my decisions on.

  • Given the propensity of privileged white people to moan incessantly on social media about the "unfairness" of it all (which they have happily doled out and expected from others for centuries), I am cutting down, unfriending and removing myself from people on social media who are self-absorbed and don't 'get it'.

  • Given the shifting of the burden of confinement and economic loss to our white middle class client base, we're readjusting our business strategy to focus on countries with whom we will easily share travel bubbles: Korea, Taiwan, some parts of China, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau in the short term. The longer term we will be looking towards India, the Middle East and the more progressive parts of Europe.

  • Given how little we like hand sanitizers and face masks (despite producing an exceptional vegan hand sanitizing product 😉 ) we now mostly stay, eat, cook and entertain at home.

The long game for us has not changed a bit: the Thai-Burma Border will be home for me, and our new business production & herbal teaching center, once my daughter starts university abroad in 2022.

I'm delighted with The Great Pause and feel it has been, and is, invaluable. Not because anything is really new or even very different, but because 'things' are out in the open.

It's rare for me to quote the Bible 😆 but I hear this verse in my head as I close:

For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. Luke 8:17.

We are luckier and more blessed than most - sitting here with electricity and a computer, debating and discussing an idea instead of falling into exhausted sleep on a half-full belly after a day in the mines cutting stone by hand, or ploughing a rice field, or working in dangerous electronics factory in Asia.

Appreciating the Global Rebalancing.

Appreciating the Global Rebalancing.

If it's rebalancing, that would mean we would also see improvement for those living in poverty as the western world sinks a little. That I'd look forward to.

I sincerely hope that will happen - but that's a 2-3-4 year proposition. Australia, for example, won't start seeing the real economic crisis till 1-2 years from now. My friend who is Head of School at a QLD university shared with me the huge redundancy rounds happening now. That flow on of reduced faculty and almost zero intl students won;t be felt for 12 months, but OTHER countries will see their students starting to study more locally.

Food production? There are revolutions happening everywhere - it takes YEARS for this stuff and level of change to really manifest.

I am sending good will to and energy to this thought of positive global rebalancing. ❤️

Appreciate your always insightful engagement, my dear. 🙏

You are in a very nice position comparing with lots of people! Now you could gather all the energy to follow your path!

Good luck.

Every single one of us INVITES ENERGY TO FOLLOW US by the choices, actions and words we emanate. My choice to be here in Thailand in the position I'm in has come at HUGE personal cost. NO income for 5 months? Meh. That I don't discuss the personal downside of Covid doesn't mean there aren't any.

I CHOOSE to radiate the energy I want in the world, and I draw more of that towards myself. We all do!! Just not everyone knows it.

Sending you a Chiang Mai hug and working as best I am able to contribute to a better world for people who are not currently experiencing abundance or freedom.

Yup! Very tight and tough at the moment for me too! Still no work prospect for me either! Very hard on being optimistic about the near future. Things we wouldn’t want to burden others with but hope they are sensitive enough to feel it. They are all having their problems too. It’s going to be mad Max next year.

Luckily I still have some cryptos which could be exchanged for fiat.

Good luck.

Thank you for the tip!

The Great Pause, what a wonderful way to describe what's happening in the world right now, wonderful blog and so full of wisdom and positivity, thank you @artemislives!
My mother who will be 89 this year has been saying that this is happening to balance things; people have been way too busy chasing money and material things and not focusing on what really matters. This pause has stopped everyone in their tracks, let's hope lessons learned will be carried forward.
I feel so blessed to have a warm bed and food to eat but often lie in bed thinking of those unfortunate people who do not have those luxuries and have to struggle just to get food for the next meal. That's the downside of lockdown - those with informal businesses who live from day to day, cannot earn. We try to help where we can, but it's still not enough!

I have an informal business, if you will. No income for 5 months, no social benefits from any country, living off my Hive and a few charitable scraps. I know and understand the downsides more than most people know. And yet I choose NOT to make everything personal and about me and to see The Great Pause for what it is - the first phase of a long overdue global reset. Your mom sounds like a wise woman. ❤️

Today the first chartered flight with 31 Chinese tourists arrived in Thailand - 42 days of 0 community transmissions and we are beginning to reopen. NO Q for approved visitors - but covid tests mandatory 72 hours prior to flight and on arrival, USD 100,000 mandatory medical insurance specifically which covers Covid, masks compulsory in public spaces and tack&trace apps also mandatory.

We ARE blessed and what a different global response to that which we opposed on our African brothers and sisters during Ebola just a few years ago. Nothings changed - just the people experiencing it has.

Appreciated your comment very much. Thank you. 🙏

You continue to amaze me with the fullness of your life experiences! You have had this Swine Flu (which is a covid virus) very close to you and been directly affected by it so your vision is very clear for what it is!
I appreciate you sharing your wisdom and very positive outlook!

2022 for your daughter going off to university - that will be a major change but it sounds like your life will still be very full with your herbal teaching center and new business - all the best to you!

"The fullness of life expereinec" - LOL - I could have done without the Swine Flu episode!! LOL. I actually caught it in Melbourne and, despite reporting my diagnosis and fever on check in to the AUS airport officials, was happily put on the flight. I so appreciate the caution in Asia which ultimately is making it easier for everyone to get beck to work and start travelling. Only 58 deaths out of 65 million in 5 months - and we were the first "blacklisted" country in January with 300,000 chinese in TH from Wuhan. LOL.

Thailand had its first chartered flight of approved, pre-tested chinese tourists arrive today and life is shifting rapidly. Grateful.

Hope you and the extended family are doing well in your gorgeous Canadian summer. ❤️🙏

Glad things are starting to open up for you!

I've been busy preparing for my niece and family - they couldn't get away until tomorrow then it will be a 5 or 6 day drive.

Lot's of changes coming about.

It's funny that even with my gardening I'm ensuing that I do what I can to make it as productive as I can since it will be feeding 7 people instead of just us two.

I'm looking forward to working with , mostly my niece's husband, to really get the land producing and building up our self sufficiency. He's into gardening and there is so much potential here which was just a bit beyond me.

Think of it as the 1+1=3 effect. How NICE to have help in the garden - I continually feel overwhelmed by mine. In more abundant times I pay a Burmese man to do the tough stuff but right now it's reverting to almost jungle!! Urgh.

Praying for safe travels for your family - that's quite a drive!!
