Urban Art - Color Millor

in StreetArt3 years ago (edited)

Out cycling this morning, I found this piece of art in-between a police station a children's playground. A quick Google search and I found out that this is one of a number of murals in the area, and it is called Som-hi / Somni.

In Catalan som-hi means “Let’s go” and somni means “dream” and the mural is supposed to reflect children playing at blowing bubbles and placing their dreams upon them.

As with this site, most of the murals are painted on electricity substations, which offer 4 sizable canvas and would look like a total eyesore if left without colour. Apparently, all the designs are unique and offer respectful themes which would not encourage violence or discriminate on the grounds of gender, race or anything else.

Not wanting to get too close in case a copper shouted at me, I didn't notice that this, and all the other murals, have a plaque with the title of the work and a QR code. The code would take you to www.visitcalamillor.com website, where there is information such as the route you can take to check out all these colourful substations.

When I lived in Valencia on the mainland, I was impressed with the amount of urban art which was left untouched and assumingly, like the above, commissioned or encouraged by the powers that be. This is something you wouldn't see in the UK, and most of the graffiti is plastered along walls and tunnels at the side of train tracks, and most of it is a bit 'taggy' and rather crap. A bit of a shame really because the UK could do with a spot of colour, especially this time of year. Not that I should care though :D

From colourful, sunny Mallorca, have an awesome weekend!

That’s awesome I love when cities get involved with doing these types of things. Really improves the look of some of that stuff while keeping their purpose! Need those sub-stations lol

For sure! I have a friend who was trying to get a local council in the UK to agree to some art to make a part of the city look nicer. It was flatly refused - something to do with encouraging more graffiti, which is bad, apparently 🤔

The old graffiti argument. It's pretty ridiculous, we had the same argument in my home town and we overturned their stupid decision. You know how we stopped graffiti from happening? By commissioning the graffiti artists to do it! No one defaced it then lol

Sorry for being a grammar Nazi but i suggest you change encourage to discourage 🤣

Haha, thank you!

Beautiful work, much better than the usal grey electricity stations...
