A jaunt down Belfast way

in StreetArt2 years ago

Hello Hello Hive and all you awesome art lovers!

First time for me posting some street art in this awesome community, I have been meaning to share some cool art I saw in Belfast the capital of Northern Ireland, but got sidetracked, until now that is.

Oh well better late than never I say!

This post is my entry to CCC's Street Art Contest #93 in the StreetArt Community.

I hope I have followed the rules correctly.

Belfast is a city close to my heart, and it is where I grew up in The Troubles. We had to move to Scotland as my father had been targeted by one half of the troublemakers shall we say.

The mural you can see for yourself depicts the two ways you can lead your life.
Get educated get a job and be successful or live of crime and suffer the consequences, prison or an early grave.
Unfortunately I could not get a picture without a car being in the way, and I am not sure who the artist is but this is my entry picture!

In Belfast during The Troubles, there was far too much violence and too many people killed so this was a mural that home to me.

image.png

This girl mural was not far from the Peace wall that still separates Protestant Belfast and Roman Catholic Belfast and you need to be on the correct side of it at night when they close it.

image.png

I loved this dancer, just look at her flowing locks. I know many a woman who would love hair like that!

image.png

Does this heart give rise to the meaning blowing off steam?

To me it shows that despite its troubled past, Belfast is very much alive and kicking!

This is just a flavour of some street art from Belfast and I hope that you enjoyed it.

Thank you for visiting and have a wonderful week!

Good morning 👋🏻☀️

Hey Ed! I love the message given in the first mural. But I love the art in the one of the heart, and the ballerina is gorgeous.

Hey Super Eli, yeah it is a cool message!
The heart was was a cool one, and as for the dancer, I initially though a ballerina then wondered if they would have a skirt like that, so took the easy route and said dancer!
Thanks for commenting and I see Ageese peeking ;)

Hey! My pleasure Super Ed :) I love the heart mural and the meaning you gave to it.
And well, Ageese is always peeking, and he says hello to his uncle ;)😹😹

Yes I think the heart sums Belfast up, alive and growing and beating Super Eli
Hello Hello wee Ageese ;)

It is good to know that the city, despite the troubles, is alive, growing, and beating. Must be an interesting place.
Ageese is resting jeje

Fascinating place it really it is, and wonderful people and the river Lagan running through it makes it a fun place!
aww about time the wee nephew Ageese got some rest jaja

And you've never thought of moving there?
Ageese is resting indeed, hehe

Awesome and beautiful artworks on the walls Tito Ed. Your story of The Troubles troubled me for a while but perhaps the place is peaceful now? I love the girl belting a dance there :)

Salamuch CJ yes The Troubles are hopefully a thing of the past, we just need to live in harmony and be done with it! Yeah the dancer was well cool:)

Glad to know it's over and yes, we do love peace and harmony. The artworks are really cool

Mostly over, there is still smouldering things going on, it is unlike any other city in the UK.
pero oo cool artwork!

Oh... hoping for it to be over then one of these days :)

Aye me too CJ, me too :)

I love Murals. Those are cool, uncle Ed. Your first pic speaks a million words. Beautiful. We do have lots of street arts around here near the beach too :)

Thanks so much Mrs P:)
Yeah I love street, oh you should show us some, I wonder if they are all beach or sea related?

Hello, uncle Ed. I'd definitely would go over my albums and find those mural photos hehe. The one I love the most is the mermaid one. Soon :)

Oh a mermaid Mrs P, now that would be cool to see! Yeah soooon you need to get them dug out and posted!

My mate lives in Belfast. I used to hate visiting him back in the day but thankfully things are a whole lot better now. Still occasionally get asked what team you support but hey ho!

Oh hell yes it is massively different now. lol Partick Thistle was the wife's standard reply in Scotland, clever answer as she would because Gregory's Girl was the film her brother loved as a boy and it was Partick they supported, so a non-committal answer and won't upset anyone 🤣🤣

Aye, that was the answer to give! It never satisfied anytime right enough. They wanted green or blue!!!

Well once she learned how to tell what they were without asking them, she knew exactly which team to say to wind them up!

Its funny that. My missus thinks I am being a bigoted swine when I claim to be able to tell. She is always telling me off for being an old dinosaur. I'm like, Am fae Govan! She always laughs and tells me I am a middle class fanny and to shoosh :OD

jaja a middle class fanny fae Govan, but of course you can tell. The accents are a starter, am sure you picked that up in Belfast too!

Oh aye, I had a field day with the accents in Belfast. It always kinda amused me that my wee mate who moved there when he was 17 was talking with a thick strong Belfast accent by the time he was 19. I am always like, right you, behave yourself and talk Scottish!

Reading your description of this area based on your personal experience and history, these artworks suddenly gets a much deeper meaning...

I must say, all these artists who created these masterpieces are very talented indeed. I surely hope they have chosen the right way!

Thank you for sharing this with us!

Thanks Jaco, it is a powerful city and their is meaning to these murals.
Things are so much better now and yes I hope that they have all chosen the right way.
Thanks so much for popping in :)

You're welcome, Ed👍!

Great to see hopeful and interesting murals like this adorning walls in Belfast - it is a positive move away from the sectarian and emotive murals you more commonly see. The North has come a long way since the troubles, thank God and a big thanks must go to the US under Bill Clinton, John Hume and David Trimble for helping to broker a lasting peace. I remember I was in Boston playing an underage soccer tournament with my school when the Peace Process was signed and it was big news in Boston at the time too. A world where we can all respect each other is the one I want to live in and we have certainly moved towards that in the past 25 to 30 years. Peace Out.

I tell you what, Clinton is a legend in my eyes, he helped make it happen big time.
The sectarian murals I have heaps of from both sides, but this is not the place for them.
Yes peace and respect is what is needed, we might not all have the same beliefs etc but we need to respect each other.
Things have really changed.
I was banned from going back to Belfast by mother, she even would not let me got to Uni there, so it was only after she passed did I go back, and what a change for the good the city has gone through.

You know many women who would love a hair like hers you say??? Seriously?

These paintings are very beautiful. What's a mural by the way?

hehe oh yes I do zyzy:)
Thank you and I think they are beautiful, so a mural is when you basically paint on a wall.

Wow! I've learnt a new word.

hehe a new word day is the zyzy way;)

Wow!!! Never knew that you grew up in NI, Ed- 👀 So were you born in Scotland, moved to NI, and moved back again? The street murals are great!!! Love the dancer and the heart, although the message in the first one is important. The heart as the central engine driving the city amongst all the cogs is great imagery!!! Good luck in the contest. I saw this post in Dreemport today😍 !ALIVE !PIZZA

Yes left Belfast when I was five, and when I am drunk that is the accent that comes back out of my mouth by default 🤣🤣🤣
Yea the dancer was awesome as purt art but the messages in the first big one and the heart are powerful.
thank you and loved seeing you here Sam:)

when I am drunk that is the accent that comes back out of my mouth by default 🤣🤣🤣

hahaha this must be hilarious!!!

@dreemsteem I am not the only one who thinks they have more than one accent hehe... even Ed believes that he has two! See... it is possible 🤣🤣🤣 !LOLZ (although you are probably just going to say...yes it is possible... but you just don't have two anymore, Sam! ROTFL)

hehe Ed has two no doubt about that;) If I want to confuse someone I will switch voices and carry on that way the whole day if need be!

🤣🙌 !LOLZ

What do a tick and the Eiffel Tower have in common?
They're both Paris sites.

Very cool first post in the community with this selection 👍 If Street Art (and art in general) can ease tensions, that's great. It can't have been easy growing up in this situation. Thanks for sharing these pics on The StreetArt Community.
