Hive PH Contest: Election is Coming! Share Your Criteria For Choosing Your Candidate.

in Hive PH2 years ago

Election Time

May 9, 2022 will soon be etched in history as one of the turning points in Philippine history. On this day, the voice of the people will be heard and registered voters around the world will be able to cast their vote to choose the 17th president of the Philippines: the head of government, head of state, and commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

On top of this, he or she will be tasked with leading the country at a time when we are facing a persistent pandemic, economic decline, poverty, corruption, peace and order, a long-standing guerilla war with communists, and threat of war from the outside.

Just the Basics...

Election day is fast approaching and many people are still sitting on the fence on who to vote for. But do we Filipinos really know how to sensibly choose a president? At the most basic, the qualifications to even be considered as a presidential candidate are fairly simple. In fact, there are only five (5) according to the Philippine Constitution, he or she:

  1. must be a natural born citizen.
  2. must be a registered voter.
  3. must be able to read/write.
  4. must be at least 40 years of age on the day of the election.
  5. must be a resident of the Philippines for 10 years immediately preceding the election.

But, having met these qualifications is only the first step. How many 40 year old Filipinos really qualify for the position? If we are interviewing for a job as a clerk at a company, the minimum qualifications almost always include college graduate and at least some experience, but we don't really emphasize experience educational background and experience as a qualifier in our choice for the highest office in the country, don't we? In financial institutions, it is a must to do background investigation on the candidates even for the entry level positions. People who vie for positions in debt collection or cashiers are checked to make sure that they don't run away with the company's money, yet we aren't as scrupulous as the HR people even at small corporations.

HivePH Contest

So, to raise awareness, and in the spirit of public education, HivePH would like to invite everyone to share with us your thoughts in choosing the candidate you will vote for in the upcoming elections.

To emphasize, we are not looking for posts and articles hyping a particular candidate, or worse bashing a candidate, but your personal process in how you are going to make that choice. What considerations and criteria will you be using to make the decision? Is there a particular qualification or experience that you would want in the ideal candidate?

Of course there will be prizes given out to those who will be chosen, but we know that educating the public is more important, right? To be clear about it, please share with us:

The process you will use to choose the candidate you will vote for: the criteria, qualifications, and other considerations you will be using as guide in selecting the best candidate. Include intangibles if it carries weight in decision making process.

I liked that the contest steered away from talks about candidates. Values and considerations are much more meaningful (and less toxic) topics haha. Cool contest and write-up, @juanvegeterian and @hiveph!

Thanks, Jazz. Actually, @indayclara was the one who recommended to focus more on the personal process and criteria. 😊

This would be my entry for this one:

Also @hiveph , while I was doing this post, I kind of went out of hand and actually did a 2000 word essay(?) that would "supposedly" be my entry until I re-read your rules and it would be against this:

  • A minimum of 400 words up to 1,000 words.
  • NO bashing, attacks, and criticism of any candidate.

I don't see them as bashing or attacks but they're indeed criticism so I went and did a condensed version. I would like to ask if I am allowed to post the full version while the condensed version being the entry for your contest.

To emphasize, we are not looking for posts and articles hyping a particular candidate, or worse bashing a candidate, but your personal process in how you are going to make that choice.

Hey, thanks for the write-up, @konaqua. The word count is less of a "violation" than mentioning candidates, IMO. The "spirit" of the contest is to highlight the personal process and criteria by the individual, and not to hype (also, not to bash) a particular candidate or another.

Siguro, ganito na lang. 1 entry per author naman so entry mo ang condensed version. Then, i-post mo rin ang long-version mo, it won't be counted naman as entry but you can still post since pinaghirapan mo na yan sulatin, di ba? It will still earn rewards and upvotes as a regular blog post. Hope that helps. 😊

Nagdadalawang isip ako baka ma mis interpret yung post ko. I would not post it na lang I guess. As they said, less words, less mistakes. haha.

One thing I want to point out for other readers who would read this. As Pasig Mayos Vico Sotto pointed out, the higher the campaign budget, the more they will need to get back. :)

But still.... I guess I would post it. Let people be the judge lol.

I don't mind. Kung makatotohanan naman ang post, bakit hindi? Just make sure na it follows community guidelines if you are going to post sa Hive PH.

Here's my entry for this contest! I enjoyed writing this piece :)

Thanks, @devowriter. I enjoyed reading your entry. 🙏😊

We all want good qualities for the next set of public servants, but when we are presented with one, we still choose those with a history of corruption and human rights abuses. I'm slowly losing hope in the Filipino voters. We all want a good government, but we continuously choose thieves.

It's useless to put criteria when we are easily swayed by fake news, emotion appealing promises, and empty platforms.

We all want good qualities for the next set of public servants, but when we are presented with one, we still choose those with a history of corruption and human rights abuses.

That's really the reason why I'd like to see the Filipino Hiver reflect on how the choice is made by the individual, by the voter, by a person who affects and at the same time is affected by the election. Mayroon kasing disconnect with how we as a voting population looks at something and makes political decisions. Maybe because our democracy is so young that our "political" brain had not yet matured.

It's useless to put criteria when we are easily swayed by fake news, emotion appealing promises, and empty platforms.

The reason why fact-checking and being aware of how we choose is so important.

Don't, we have only just gotten away from being a colony if we look at the bigger picture of history. And only a generation removed from a dictatorship. What can we expect? Parang baby na nag-aaral pa lang tumayo at maglakad.

We all want a good government, but we continuously choose thieves.

I saw an Ambeth Ocampo interview last month about his upcoming book based on the Marcos diaries. It was really interesting how the diaries came to his possession and the many anecdotes he shared about Marcos, Sr. Going back to your point, he was already sowing the seeds of "fake news" even during the start of his presidency in the seventies, so we have been conditioned already, and I don't expect it to be any different soon. But there is something all of us can do. And, that is to fact-check your sources as much as possible.

Thanks, @tpkidkai. This is an interesting list of qualities and qualifications you will use in choosing the next president. Having a criteria that includes something specific to your industry is a good idea. The others are more for the public good and one that I think looks at the character of the candidate. 😊

Thanks for sharing how you voted abroad, @wittyzell ! 😊 Mga ka-hiveph, please visit her blog post if you also reside in Japan but have not mailed in your ballot yet.

This would be fun. I'll probably join in.

Looking forward to your entry, @konaqua. 😁

The pressure!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! (teehee)

hahaha... No pressure naman. Maybe, think of this as an exercise where you are explaining stuff to a kid. 😊
