After the demonstration of authority given by the Tampa Rays, in the divisional series against the powerful New York Yankees, the table was served for the end of the American League facing the Houston Astros with the Florida team. The Yankees will have to check the team in the off-season; with a high budget they have not reached the world series for 11 seasons and after hitting 17 home runs in 9 play-off games, it is easy to discern that it is not the batting that is the problem, despite the fact that the hot-rodders could do nothing in the fifth and decisive game of the series.

Last night was strange, both teams - Astros and Rays - were playing in a neutral venue designated as a bubble, due to the reality of the Covid epidemic. The park chosen was Petco Park in San Diego, California, known for its large dimensions and where home runs are scarce. Even so, the night witnessed two bumps that defined the game with few runs.

Again two Venezuelans were partial protagonists of the ball game and Jose Altuve gets the first mention, besides being responsible for the title of this note Why? The man has hooked a ball on a 1-2 count and sent it into the left field stands, breaking the record for most home runs for a second base in league championship series with five. Dustin Pedroia, Dominican Robinson Canó and Daniel Murphy have four.

The little giant walked around the bases with satisfaction, even with the ghost of the sign theft scandal hanging over San Diego. However, the hit wasn't enough and Cubano Arozarena would later tie with another lumberjack. An inning later Mike Zunino would hit a hit to bring back Dominican Willy Adames with the game's winning run. Let's just say that the Tampa bullpen was flawless despite the threats mounted in five innings by the Astros. They didn't give more freedoms and the Rays took the first of the series.

With Altuve's home run, he also placed second on the list of players with the most home runs in the postseason, only surpassed by Springer, his teammate. His team lost and the strange thing is how dull the Astros' bats looked, literally running over the Athletics. Playoff mysteries.

The other Venezuelan who distinguished himself, did not do it with any team, neither was he among the journalists who followed the game or the narrators. He did it behind the home plate: Manuel González was the main umpire of the game and was a first order witness of Altuve's palazo. He had a discreet and sober performance as any Major League referee must have. Our word of encouragement to him. He will continue to work on the series as part of the team of judges chosen to sing the plays.

As the note shows, there was not much emotion in the first of the series, although a slate ending with a race advantage says a lot about the quality of both teams. Tonight (4:07 p.m. pacific time) they face off in the second of the seven-game series to win 4, on a stage that will be the same for all games. The best of the Astros' rotation Lance McCullers Jr. faces Charlie Morton to try to give the Astros their first victory...it will be dawn and we will see!
