El pequeño más grande y la consistencia [ESP] | The Smaller most bigger and the consistency [ENG]

Whoever is in the afterlife and is responsible for the recruitment of ballplayers, must have rushed the pace this year 2020, because a long line of hall fame level stars have given them to prepare suitcases and tools, to go play in the Large Eternal Leagues. And if the unsuspecting reader doesn't believe me, check out this: Al Kaline, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Ron Perranoski and Bob Gibson.

Joining that illustrious roster are second baseman Joe Morgan and left-handed pitcher Whitey Ford, recent travelers who have transcended the physical and are warming up in preseason for a very special team that, we speculate, is being formed in paradise. Joe was the last to leave on the 12th of this month and Whitey left on October 9th in this fateful year for baseball legends.

Joe Morgan

¡Puras joyas..!

An African-American second baseman, Joe was seen playing fortunately in the years of the Big Red Machine of which he was a part. We never forget the Reds' center line drums at that time: Johnny Bench in the catching area, Joe and David Concepcion around second base and Cesar Geronimo in centerfield. They were joined by: Pete Rose on first, Tany Perez on third, George Foster and Ken Griffey on the grounds... pure gems!

One of the things that most caught my attention about Joe was a kind of nervous tic in his left arm that made him look uneasy as well as strange. I'll never know if it was something to take the opposing pitcher's concentration away or if it was more of a habit from his childhood. What it did show was that before, coaches didn't intervene in the way a kid stood in the batter's box as long as the kid was hitting.

Joe was very low for the average player of the time and he turned out to be a star: 10 times he went to the mid-season game, 5 times he took the golden glove, 2 world series rings and 2 times named most valuable player in the national league, says a lot about the kind of player he was. However, what I liked most about him was the way he attacked the ball on his turn at bat. Without fear. After his retirement, he became a baseball commentator for the U.S. sports network ESPN.

Whitey Ford

A left-handed pitcher Hall of Fame, you can't talk about the history of the Yankees without referring to Whitey. He was a franchise player and a very consistent pitcher. He shone in the 50's and 60's setting the winning record for a Yankee pitcher of all time: 236-106. For every loss, the guy returned two and a half wins. Wasn't he a born winner?

Ten times all star, Whitey has a very special record: a .690 winning percentage, the highest for a pitcher in history, who has made at least 300 decisions. Let's just say he's a type of pitcher you'll never see again, mainly because today the game is dominated by relief pitchers and it no longer depends much on the starter if he ends up winning the game. He has the record of most World Series games won, of which he won 6 rings and helped the team win 11 league championships. Peace to the ashes of both.
